After starting his career as a wide receiver, it’s impressive what Mike Sainristil was able to do while at Michigan. Sainristil shows excellent presence in zone coverage. He does a great job reading the quarterback’s eyes, and understanding his position within the concept. He’s a great ball tracker, and has good speed for the position. However, because of he is new to the position he can be a bit raw.
Sainristil struggles in man coverage. He doesn’t know how to properly defend certain movements, and often will see him get turned around in coverage. He has the short area speed to recover, but in the NFL it will spell disaster. Sainristil also does not have the ability to play press coverage because of that lack of instinct at the position. Perhaps it can be something he could be coached up on, but I actually believe he would thrive as a safety in the NFL. He shows good presence in the run game and isn’t afraid to make hits. I think Sainristil is a Day 2 prospect who could be a star in the right system. – Thomas Christopher
