Auburn and Kentucky faced each other for the 36th time on the Plains on Saturday, November 1, in Week 10. In a game where both teams traveled in time to the 1920s to find their offense, Kentucky pulled off the 10-3 upset over the Tigers. With that in mind, let’s dive into this Auburn vs. Kentucky 2025 college football recap.
Auburn vs. Kentucky 2025 College Football Recap
This was a contest that could have gone a million ways. Yet, it’s hard to believe anyone would have thought it could have been a 10-3 affair between two SEC programs. And, the only reason Auburn was able to score was because true freshman linebacker Elijah Melendez intercepted the ball and ran it back into Kentucky territory. The first five drives all ended in punts and totaled less than 100 yards.
First Half Woes
Kentucky finally capitalized on their own drive by going 44 yards and kicking a field goal. The two teams exchanged punts again, then Auburn got the ball on their 12-yard line.
Auburn ran the ball six straight times, including a 26-yard run by quarterback Ashton Daniels. The offensive line struggled all night long, and finally seemed to be getting into a rhythm on this drive. Then, Hugh Freeze called three straight pass plays, resulting in two incompletions and a sack on fourth down. Luckily for Auburn, Kentucky ran two plays on the following drive and threw the aforementioned interception. Auburn was able to get into field goal range and Alex McPherson nailed his seventh straight field goal right before half, leaving the score at 3-3.
A Series of Unfortunate Events
Kentucky received the ball at the start of the second half. The Wildcats put together a 10-plapy, 75-yard drive and scored the only touchdown of the game. Auburn had Kentucky on 3rd-and-11 twice on the scoring drive, and gave up the first down both times. One of those third-down conversions was a 32-yard play to Fred Farrier II. Two plays later, they scored on a 13-yard touchdown pass from Cutter Boley to former Alabama wide receiver Kendrick Law.
Auburn’s next drive was 11 plays for 43 yards led by Ashton Daniels at quarterback. Like many possessions in this contest, it ended in a punt because the offensive line couldn’t maintain their blocks. Kentucky punted on their next drive, and then this is where things got weird.
Auburn head coach Hugh Freeze unexpectedly decided to bring Jackson Arnold into the game to play quarterback. The drive consisted of two runs (one a 19-yard gasher by Jeremiah Cobb), two passes completed for 15 yards total, and two sacks of Arnold.
Each team punted on their next two drives; and then things got even stranger for Auburn.
Boley threw an interception to Auburn’s Anquon Fegans. Unfortunately, Fegans fumbled the ball on the interception return and Kentucky recovered it. They ran three more plays before having to punt. However, it completely changed the field position battle in this game. And, it’s where things got completely out of sorts for the Tigers.
In the ensuing possession for Auburn, Hugh Freeze put the previously-benched Daniels back in the game. And, Daniels ultimately threw an interception to end the game.
Failures of Hugh Freeze
This game is not on Ashton Daniels, Kail Ellis, or even Jackson Arnold. And, defensive coordinator DJ Durkin and the defense held another SEC team to 10 points on offense. Instead, this loss was on Hugh Freeze, who was not able to score more than three points off of a gifted possession by the defense.
In 10 out of the last 14 SEC games, Freeze’s offense has scored less than 20 points. They have only scored more than 30 only eight times out of the last 21 total games. That includes games against Alabama A&M, New Mexico, UL Monroe, Ball State and South Alabama. That means outside of three (relatively easy) non-conference opponents, Freeze hasn’t been able to generate offensive production.
And, in the end, it cost him his job. After the game, the head coach was relieved of his duties as head coach of the Auburn Tigers. What’s next, remains to be seen. Yet at this point, things couldn’t get much worse for the program.
