Brock Purdy Signs 5-Year, $265 Million Contract Extension

Brock Purdy, the league winners, leaguewinners

According to Adam Schefter and ESPN sources, Brock Purdy and the San Francisco 49ers are finalizing a five-year, $265 million contract extension. Purdy, the Mr. Irrelevant draft pick in 2022, now receives his much-anticipated payday.

The contract makes Purdy the seventh highest paid quarterback per yearly average pay, coming in tied with Jared Goff at $53 million per season. The contract also comes with $181 million guaranteed, a bit of an increase from the $3.74 million that Purdy was receiving on his 4-year rookie deal. Brock Purdy becomes the only quarterback from the 2022 NFL draft to receive a contract extension with his original team.

Since joining the 49ers, Purdy has led the team to two NFC Championships and a Super Bowl appearance, as well as finished top-5 in MVP voting in 2023. This past season was a step back for the franchise quarterback due to injuries affecting the overall product on offense, as San Francisco was ranked as the #2 most injured offense. Despite this, Purdy finished the season third in YPA, 4th in success rate, and 5th in EPA/ATT, earning him the payday he has received.

Overall, the deal allows the 49ers to pay their guy market value money, while not resetting the market entirely. The 49ers knew this payday was on the way this offseason, having to let some of their key pieces in Dre Greenlaw, Talanoa Hufanga Charvarius Ward, and Deebo Samuel be moved to new teams to have leeway to afford Purdy’s new contract.

Going forward, the 49ers are going to have to reimagine how they structure their team. Without the bargain of Purdy’s cheap rookie contract, the team may look to be more analytical when it comes to evaluating who they sign moving forward, as well as relying more on the draft to find new talent instead of splashy free agent signings. Building through the draft appears to be the 49ers’ new way of doing business, as they allowed several offseason pieces to walk this last year and acquired several draft picks, whether through compensatory means or trades.

No matter what the future may hold, Brock Purdy’s story is one of the best narratives in the NFL. To go from the last pick of the draft (with some scouts even claiming he would have an undrafted scout value), Mr. Irrelevant third-string quarterback, to now a top-ten franchise quarterback is a script fitting for a franchise based in California.
