Cal Football, California Golden Bears, The League Winners

A week following their big win on the road against Boston College, the California Golden Bears (4-1) will return home to face off against the Duke Blue Devils (3-2). The ACC is wide open right now as Cal looks to start 2-0 in conference play. Duke, led by head coach Manny Diaz, has started conference play strongly, beating NC State and Syracuse in consecutive weeks. This game will take place at California Memorial Stadium, with kickoff at 7:30 p.m. PST. Find out more about predictions and key players below in this Cal vs. Duke 2025 preview.

California Golden Bears vs. Duke Blue Devils: Matchup History

It’s been a long time since these two teams have played one another. The last matchup dates all the way back to 1963, when the two schools finished the game with a tie. This is only the third time these two programs have met, which seems kind of crazy considering the elite academics of both schools. That’s just the way of the world now in college football, but this game already feels like it’s going to be a classic. Currently, Cal is winless in the small series, but they’ll look to change that in Week 6.

Cal vs. Duke 2025 Preview: Keys, Players, and Predictions

Key Players for Cal

This has already been discussed enough – and fans should only focus on this year’s team – but losing tight end Jack Endries was a big blow to the program. The tight end room was a huge question mark coming into the season. Yet now, it is no longer a concern. Tight end Mason Mini has proven himself in a big way through the first five games of the season. The sophomore tight end had his breakout game last weekend against Boston College, where he snagged four passes for 70 yards and a touchdown. Manny Diaz always has an excellent defense, and he’s probably going to throw a lot at the Cal offense. Look for Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele to target Mini early and often this game, especially if Duke decides to bring a lot of pressure.

Cal fans were given some tough news earlier this week when head coach Justin Wilcox announced that Ryan McCulloch is out for the season with an injury. That’s an incredibly big blow to this defense, but as always, it’s the next man up. And for the defense, that man is Jayden Wayne.

Wayne, who previously played at Washington and Miami, is now in his junior season and the new starting edge rusher for the Bears. He hasn’t played much in his first two years, but is now given a golden opportunity to bring juice to a pass rush that desperately needs it. It’ll be interesting to see who he rotates with, but Wayne is the starter right now. His size, paired with his athletic abilities, could make him a matchup nightmare for the Duke offensive line.

Key Players for Duke

Duke quarterback Darian Mensah has been off to a hot start this season. The young quarterback has already thrown for 1573 yards, 13 touchdowns, and only two interceptions. He has an incredibly strong and accurate arm. Mensah does tend to hold onto the ball for too long sometimes, but if Duke can give him time, he will make defenses pay. This will be a huge test for the Justin Wilcox-led defense, which is coming into this game banged up. If the Bears want to win this game, they have to keep Mensah in third and long situations and keep the big plays to a minimum.

Unlike in previous seasons, Cal has done a pretty good job in the pass protection department. This week, the offensive line will be tasked with block Anthony Vincent Jr. upfront. The senior defensive end is huge, standing in at 6-foot-6, and has been excellent this season.. He doesn’t have very many tackles, but he does have five sacks already. In many ways, offensive line coach Famika Anae has been a dream come true for Bears fans, but this weekend will be a true test. They cannot let Vincent get home or he will keep this offense bottled up.

2025 Game Preview: How Cal Can Win vs. Duke in Week 6

After the team was down big to start the game against Boston College, the Bears season started to feel like a repeat of last year. However, things are different now in Strawberry Canyon, and the Bears have a real chance at beating Duke. The Blue Devils have to travel all the way across the country and play at night in the cold. That’s not something they’re really used to, and it’s a big advantage for the Bears.

Cal always seems to step up in these types of games, and I’d expect them to win. Still, Duke is playing really good football right now under Manny Diaz. It’s two teams with good young quarterbacks that have a defensive minded head coach. This to me, feels like a low scoring affair, but Cal will make the necessary big plays in this one to start out conference play with a 2-0 record.

Cal vs. Duke Score Prediction: Cal 24, Duke 20
