It’s hard to put into words how important Saturday night was for the California Golden Bears. It was primetime, homecoming, and the chance to start 2-0 in conference play. That being said, Cal fell flat, and October continues to be a spooky month for Justin Wilcox. Cal started the game up 21-7, with a touchdown on their first three drives. They would sniff the endzone after that, and would lose this game by a final score of Cal 21, Duke 45. With that in mind, let’s break down this 2025 showdown in our Cal vs. Duke recap.
Cal vs. Duke 2025: Game Recap
Another Letdown in a Big Spot
Cal fans are going through a wide range of emotions on this Monday, and most may have come to terms with it by now, but this one stings. The past two seasons have been filled with gut-punching losses, and this one is up near the top somewhere. You have to give credit where credit is due. The Blue Devils did not care about the fact that they had to travel across the country; they had one plan in mind, and that was to spoil homecoming.
Nonexistent Complementary Football
It couldn’t have been a better start for Cal in this game. They scored on their first drive and forced a three-and-out on Duke’s opening drive. As mentioned earlier, Cal would actually score on their first three drives to take a 21-7 lead. That’s when things started to fall apart for the Bears.
Duke would go on to score 38 unanswered points, including a 24-point second quarter. Cal could not play complementary football in this game. When the offense started strong, the defense faltered, and when the defense played well in the second half, the offense couldn’t pick up a first down. Not to mention, special teams didn’t do too much to help either.
Duke had control of field position for what felt like the entire game, besides a couple of Michael Kern punts. It feels like Cal playing a complete game with all three phases in the Justin Wilcox-era is incredibly rare, but they needed one to beat Duke.
Darian Mensah Picks Cal Apart
Duke has a ton of talent on both sides of the football. They dominated in the trenches in this contest. Early in the game, Duke relied on their star quarterback Darian Mensah to take over, and he did.
Mensah picked the Bears’ defense apart by going 22-of-30 for 265 yards and two touchdowns. Mensah probably felt like he had all day to throw back there, and that’s because he did. The impact of losing Ryan McCulloch was dramatically felt in this contest as Cal was only able to get home twice on the Duke quarterback. Mensah looked like an NFL quarterback out there, going through his reads, finding the open man, and even putting some balls in very tight windows. It’s no surprise as to why he is the ACC passing leader.
The Bye Comes at the Perfect Time
Although it may seem like the world is falling apart after this loss, Cal is still 4-2 with a favorable schedule coming up. They will have this weekend off in order to prepare for another home game against UNC the following week. This bye comes at the perfect time for the Bears who definitely have some things to work on for the second half of the season.
Two things can be true, also. Bears fans would be happy if you told them that they would have four wins going into the bye. However, there has been way too much meat left on the bone, too. We’ll see what happens during the bye to see if any changes are made, but this is starting to feel like a typical Justin Wilcox season. Hopefully, the Bears can correct some things this week and finish the second half strong.
