Heading into the new season, the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers are coming off their first losing season since 2019. And in this Week 1 matchup it’s Coastal Carolina vs. Virginia to kick off their respective 2025 seasons.
Under third-year head coach Tim Beck, the program seeks to bounce back and re-establish themselves as a perennial team in the Sun Belt Conference. Unfortunately for teal nation, however, the chants kick off their season with a tough road test against out-of-conference Virginia, and the chants are currently pegged as double-digit underdogs.
A glimpse into early expectations is provided by the Sun Belt coaches poll, as Coastal is ranked fourth in the East among its peers. The program essentially reset its roster this offseason, acquiring a number of players while also losing a significant number through the transfer portal. The team will look entirely different, with 18 starters departing. With that said, Coastal made up ground by acquiring various promising players to fill those gaps this season. And there’s no better time to do that than in Week 1 against Virginia.

Coastal Carolina vs. Virginia 2025: Keys to the Game and Predictions
Key Players for Coastal Carolina
Coastal features transfer quarterback MJ Morris taking the helm. Morris comes from Maryland and will hope to put P4 production into this G6 program.
Coastal will also look to lean on playmakers like wide receiver Jameson Tucker and running back Jalen John.
Another key will be the Coastal defense. Virginia will run a balanced attack to beat down Coastal’s defense. Coastal must avoid three-and-outs and short drives on offense, as Virginia will want to dominate the tempo of the game with long drives and wear down Coastal’s defense.
Key Players for Virginia
After going 5-7 and finishing in the bottom of the ACC, Virginia assembled one of the ACC’s top transfer classes this offseason, ranked No. 5 in the conference by 247Sports.
Quarterback Chandler Morris, a transfer from North Texas with a 3774-yard and 31-touchdown season in 2024, is expected to start. His dual-threat potential could inject life into a struggling offense.
The class also includes playmaking wide receiver Jayden Thomas from Notre Dame and running back J’Mari Taylor, who rushed for 1100 and 15 touchdowns for North Carolina Central.
The defense got a big upgrade in talent and depth, acquiring eight starters to shape the squad. In addition, freshman All-American Kam Robinson is expected back after an early injury recovery. Virginia enters the 2025 season as a strong team and will be a tough matchup for Coastal.
What to expect in Week 1?
Keeping the game within a touchdown or covering the spread would set a positive tone for Coastal Carolina’s Sun Belt campaign. Taking a strong loss here for Coastal would not be a bad thing. On the flip side, if Virginia manages to lose this game, then they would be in big trouble very early.
The Chanticleer season will be a balance of hope and realism. This opener against Virginia is an example of that. Realistically, they want to walk away with a good loss. The game will be an early test for coach Tim Beck, the quarterback room, and the team as a whole entering a hostile away environment.
