To the surprise of many, the Delaware Blue Hens enter Week 6 with a 3-1 record in their first year of FBS play. It’s been an impressive start, and once again the Blue Hens are going to be tested. This week, Ryan Carty’s program hosts the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers, who arrive with a 4-1 record. It’s a massive showdown in Delaware vs. Western Kentucky, so let’s dive into this 2025 preview.
Delaware Blue Hens vs. Western Kentucky Hilltoppers: Matchup History and Excerpts
Delaware and Western Kentucky have only played twice prior to this matchup. And, both games occurred over 40 years ago. The two meetings were in the 1981 and 1982 seasons, where the Blue Hens won both times. The point-differential in the series is currently 69-14 in favor of Delaware. It’s a big matchup, and head coach Ryan Carty spoke about it when addressing the media.
“We have a very good mindset on our team that’s focused on the day-to-day. I know we have a little more time here to get some pats in the back … [but] I think we needed this [bye] week [ahead of this matchup].”
Coach Carty also gave credit to the WKU coaching staff, as well as their starting quarterback for their fantastic offensive scheme and ability to take care of the ball. There’s no question he knows the challenge that lays ahead.
For Western Kentucky, head coach Tyson Helton also knows what’s at stake for his program in this matchup.
“Very excited to go on the road and play an excellent Delaware team … the exposure both teams will get playing on Friday will be great, so that’s awesome. A very good football team we’re about to play in Delaware. I have a tremendous respect for them and their coaching staff. They’ve done a fantastic job … never been there before [but] heard it’s a great spot. A lot of good things to look forward too; a short week and a lot to do … [but] if you want to be a good football team you have to go on the road and win.”
Despite playing on a short week while Delaware is coming off a bye, Coach Helton did not seem phased. In fact, he embraced the competition and exposure for both programs. The WKU head coach knows the test will be big against Delaware, and he’s not taking it for granted.
Delaware vs. Western Kentucky 2025 Preview: Keys, Players, and Predictions
Key Players for Delaware
While quarterback Nick Minicucci will need to play will, the running backs will be key in this contest. The Hilltoppers defense has been susceptible to the run all season. And not only can the Blue Hens quarterback run with the rock, but their two primary backs can also get loose. Jo Silver and Viron Ellison have both performed well this season. And, they will need to churn big runs to force the defense on their heels, and the crowd on their feet.
Perhaps just as importantly, Delaware needs head coach Ryan Carty and defensive coordinator Manny Rojas to out-scheme their opponents. There are points to take advantage of on both sides of the ball, and making adjustments while WKU adapts will be incredibly important.
On defense, it’s important for the Blue Hens to maintain discipline. Coach Rojas has installed some incredibly creative looks this season that have not just confused opposing offenses, but have forced mistakes. An important aspect of that is players doing their job, and maintaining discipline. Western Kentucky has an extremely talented offense, and one mistake could be the difference between a win or a loss.
Key Players for Western Kentucky
It’s a little obvious, but a key player for Western Kentucky is their starting quarterback, Maverick McIvor. The WKU signal-caller is fifth in the FBS in passing yards (1474), with a fantastic 11-to-2 touchdown to interception ratio. McIvor isn’t afraid to sling it, but he needs to be careful against the Delaware defense. Blue Hens defensive coordinator Manny Rojas has done a tremendous job tricking quarterbacks with pre-snaps looks all season. You can expect more of the same on Friday night. If WKU wants to have success, McIvor needs to continue to take care of the football and make the right decisions. He’s been great so far, but Delaware will be a true test.
With that in mind, the rushing attack needs to be on display in this contest. In order to help McIvor and keep the defense honest, they have to run the ball successfully. While he can throw 50 times per game, owning the clock and taking the right shots will be the WKU’s best bet to create an advantage on offense.
On defense, the burden of pressure falls on EDGE Harper Holloman. Hollomon has 20 total pressures, which is good for eighth in the entire FBS. However, he only has one sack at the moment, and has had some tackling miscues this season. The Hilltoppers defense needs to make life uncomfortable for quarterback Nick Minicucci. Pressure and containment are the best ways to do that. In that regard, Holloman needs to have his best game of the season against the best team they will face thus far.
2025 Game Preview: How Delaware wins vs. Western Kentucky in Week 6
To be honest, it wouldn’t be shocking if this game was a shootout. Delaware’s only dud offensively came against Colorado on the road – which is hardly a fault to them. The Blue Hens have scored at least 35 points in their other three contests. Meanwhile, WKU has put up more than 30 points in three games as well. This contest could come down to who has the ball last, and makes the fewest mistakes.
For Delaware, getting out with a win may need to involve everyone – the crowd included. In what should be a packed house, Delaware needs the Blue Hen faithful to come out and make things challenging for the Hilltopper offense. WKU is coming off a short week, and traveling on the road. Coming out of their bye, Delaware doesn’t have many excuses to lay an egg in this contest.
Defensively, they need to create turnovers. McIvor doesn’t make many mistakes. Tricking him with pre-snap looks that change post-snap are the best recipe for success – and something Delaware does well. If they can capitalize off of turnovers, this game could get out of hand quickly. Otherwise, it could be a long night for the Blue Hens.
