Fantasy Football 2021: GameDay Edge – Week 8

fantasy football

It seems like every week the game with the most explosive fantasy football point potential never lives up to the hype. In last week’s GameDay Edge, I talked about the horrendous secondary play of Tenessee Titans. This, only to see Patrick Mahomes have trouble against that front four. Let’s take a look at the Week 7 slate with some key matchups. Hopefully, there’s some explosive games for fantasy football as well.

Green Bay Packers vs Arizona Cardinals

  • Arizona Cardinals offense is second-best in the league with a 9.0 YPA on pass plays. The Green Bay defense is fifth-best only allowing 6.2 YPA per pass play. The Cardinals defense is third-best allowing 6.0 YPA per pass play.
  • Arizona Cardinals defense (5.0 YPA rush) and Green Bay defense (4.9 YPA rush) are allowing the most yards per rush outside the LA Chargers defense. They have not yielded too many fantasy points to RBs with Arizona Cardinals only yielding 13.6 FPts/G which is third-best in the league.
  • Both defenses are in the top ten in terms of sack percentage per pass play: Arizona (7.5%) and Green Bay (7.0%)

Summary

The best game of the week is on TNF! However due to the COVID exposure from the previous game, Green Bay will be without stud WR Davante Adams (they also won’t have Allen Lazard). This could be trouble for them.

A lot of credit for both teams fall on the shoulders of their stud QBs; Kyler Murray and Aaron Rodgers. However, the two defenses have played lights out. Their high sack rate means opposing offenses are put in bad down-and-distance situations often. Let’s see if the defensive front seven can take down both Rodgers and Murray, as they are apt in avoiding the pressure. Everyone will likely think this is a high-scoring game, but I would not be surprised if the defenses came out strong in the first half.

Minnesota Vikings vs Dallas Cowboys

  • Dallas is third with 33% of play frequency called in 1-2 (2 TEs) plays.
  • Minnesota Vikings have yet to give up a touchdown to the TE position while the Dallas Cowboys have given up four.
  • Dallas Cowboys defense allows the fifth-most FPTS/G to the WR position at 27.6.

Summary

It will be interesting to see if the Cowboys stay committed to using two TE sets. It could allow them to run and pass multiple concepts against the stout Vikings defense. Dalton Schultz has been fed the ball in many second and third-down situations this year. With Michael Gallup returning, it’s worth seeing if he cuts into that workload.

Even though Cowboys defense leads the league with 11 interceptions, they yield lots of yards to wide receivers, as the CBs gamble often. This MNF affair is the second-best game of the week. It should be a chess match between the two teams. I expect the Cowboys to yield their way to the Vikings as the game goes on. If it all goes right for them, the Vikings will attempt a comeback and may steal the win if given the chance,
