As we get ready for Week 4 of the 2023 NFL Season, we enter our first critical period of the fantasy football season. Many fantasy managers will face their first serious roster decisions of the season. For managers who lost players to injury in Week 3, this may be their only chance to stay afloat. So let’s take a look at my Fantasy Football 2023: Week 4 Waiver Wire Targets. To check out our full expert rankings, head over to our rankings page.
* I will be using Yahoo Fantasy Rostership & for this article. I will also attempt to give several options at each position, for varying league sizes. The dollar value next to the player’s name is the desired amount of FAAB to bid on them with a $100 budget.
Quarterbacks
Jameis Winston, New Orleans Saints ($5)
Week 4 Opponent: Buccaneers, Rostership: 1%
Derek Carr left the Saint’s Week 3 contest with what has now been diagnosed as a sprained AC joint. Carr is listed as week-to-week and is expected to miss roughly one month. For those of you in superflex leagues, Jameis Winston is simply a must-have. He has nothing to lose and will just heave the ball downfield early and often.
Winston is going to rack up his fair share of turnovers. That pales in comparison to the aerial assault he could lead with all these weapons. He is a mid-range QB2 and is worth a healthy waiver add.
Shallow League Options (More than 70% Rostership): Anthony Richardson, IND (84% rostered), Jared Goff, DET (82% rostered), Geno Smith, SEA (78% rostered), Daniel Jones, NYG (72% rostered)
Medium League Options (50 to 70% Rostership): Brock Purdy, SF (70% rostered), Jordan Love, GB (69% rostered), Russell Wilson, DEN (56%), Matthew Stafford, LAR (52%)
Deeper League Options (25 to 50% Rostership): Kenny Pickett, PIT (27% rostered), Kyler Murray, ARI (22% rostered), Sam Howell, WSH (21% rostered)
Dart Throw Options (Less than 25% Rostership): CJ Stroud, HOU (20% rostered), Mac Jones, NE (19% rostered), Bryce Young, CAR (12% rostered), Joshua Dobbs, ARI (3% rostered)
Running Backs
De’Von Achane, Miami Dolphins ($ ALL)
Week 4 Opponent: Bills, Rostership: 41%
For the second week in a row, we see a running back with an ALL as his FAAB bid. This is how I prefer to spend my FAAB. Running backs are a precious commodity, especially this season. In Week 3 against the Broncos, De’Von Achane racked up more than 200 total yards and four touchdowns. This backfield figures to be a committee for a period of time, but Achane is a league winner. Jeff Wilson is injured and Raheem Mostert is always a risk, so he could become a top-five running back by season’s end.
Drop whatever FAAB you have left on Achane and wait for him to take over this backfield. He will eventually, and when he does the points will follow in bunches.
Shallow League Options (More than 70% Rostership): Zack Moss, IND (80% rostered), Kareem Hunt, CLE (72% rostered), Joshua Kelley, LAC (72% rostered),
Medium League Options (50 to 70% Rostership): Kenneth Gainwell, PHI (60% rostered), Jaylen Warren, PIT (56% rostered), Roschon Johnson, CHI (51% rostered)
Deeper League Options (25 to 50% Rostership): Jerick McKinnon, KC (47% rostered), Elijah Mitchell, SF (39% rostered), Kendre Miller, NO (34% rostered), Tank Bigsby, JAC (29% rostered)
Dart Throw Options (Less than 25% Rostership): Tyjae Spears, TEN (24% rostered), Clyde Edwards-Helaire, KC (15% rostered), Latavius Murray, BAL (6% rostered), Rico Dowdle, DAL (3% rostered), Sean Tucker, TB (3% rostered), Chase Brown, CIN (2% rostered)
Wide Receivers
Tank Dell, Houston Texans ($15)
Week 4 Opponent: Steelers, Rostership: 31%
Tank Dell was a longshot to ever hit in the NFL due to his size. But hit is just what he seems to have done. CJ Stroud personally requested he be drafted, and he appears to be the preferred target in this offence. Dell has been shifty and explosive and is dominating targets. He has formed a nice 1-2 punch with Nico Collins, too. He could prove to be an elite stack with fellow rookie Stroud.
I don’t normally advocate spending a heavy amount of your FAAB on a wide receiver since they tend to be far more volatile, but Dell is worth a healthy 10-15% of your budget. You could even drop more if you are desperate for receiver help.
Shallow League Options (More than 70% Rostership): Nico Collins, HOU (85% rostered), Marquise Brown, ARI (84% rostered), Jaxon Smith-Njigba, SEA (71% rostered)
Medium League Options (50 to 70% Rostership): Jakobi Meyers, LV (69% rostered), Courtland Sutton, DEN (68% rostered), Tutu Atwell, LAR (60%), Treylon Burks, TEN (55%), Josh Reynolds, DET (54% rostered)
Deeper League Options (25 to 50% Rostership): Rashid Shaheed, NO (48% rostered), Adam Thielen, MIN (47% rostered), Romeo Doubs, GB (41% rostered), Kendrick Bourne, NE (33% rostered), Marvin Mims, DEN (27% rostered), Rashee Rice, KC (26% rostered)
Dart Throw Options (Less than 25% Rostership): Jayden Reed, GB (21% rostered), Jalin Hyatt, NYG (11% rostered), DJ Chark, CAR (10% rostered), Curtis Samuel, WSH (9% rostered), Rondale Moore, ARI (8%)
Tight Ends
Sam LaPorta, Lions ($25)
Week 4 Opponent: Packers, Rostership: 80%
Sam LaPorta is not available in many leagues. If he’s available in yours, you should spend as much as you think it will take. He is shaping up to be a must-start, top-five tight end. The only thing that may keep his free agent bidding down is the impending return of Jameson Williams. I don’t think this will matter. Williams has missed his opportunity, and LaPorta is the sure-fire number two target for Jared Goff in this offense.
Shallow League Options (More than 70% Rostership): Dalton Kincaid, BUF (74% rostered), Hunter Henry, TEN(74% rostered)
Medium League Options (50 to 70% Rostership): Cole Kmet, CHI (59% rostered)
Deeper League Options (25 to 50% Rostership): Chigoziem Okonkwo, TEN (47% rostered), Jake Ferguson, DAL (41% rostered), Zach Ertz, ARI (38% rostered)
Dart Throw Options (Less than 25% Rostership): Luke Musgrave, GB (18% rostered), Noah Fant, SEA (6%), Cade Otton, TB (4% rostered), Durham Smythe, MIA (2% rostered)
