In an exclusive interview, FAU football commit Jaylen “JLew” Lewis spoke about a variety of football and defense topics.
If one thing is for certain, current three-star FAU football commit Jaylen “JLew” Lewis is ready to make his impact on the next level.
During an exclusive interview with The League Winners, the cornerback discussed a variety of football topics, answering general questions to specific defensive-based ones.
Getting Started
Lewis started off the interview by speaking about his beginnings in football and how he came to play the sport.
“Basically, I started playing very young. I watched my older brother play football before he switched to baseball after his senior year. I grew up watching my brother and was like, dang, I want to be something like that.”
Lewis then spoke about his favorite football memory, which he said was playing “all road games” on their path to a state championship and “dominated” every team.
“We went back and forth with Seminole. They beat us in the first round during my sophomore year; we came back and beat them at their place. That was probably one of my best moments in football.”
Bringing the Juice on Defense
The FAU commit is versatile on defense, but is mainly playing the slot this season. When asked about the decision, Lewis said that there was an “agreement” made between him and his coach to play that position.
“Slot receivers are usually one of the fastest on the team, so let’s put them against one of the fastest in the state. See what they can do. I enjoy it.”
Lewis discussed his playing style during the interview. He said he wants to be “more aggressive” heading into college, mainly because his physicality will “throw off quarterback timing.”
“Right now, in high school, I don’t really have to mess up the timing. It won’t be open. Hopefully, in college, there are better receivers. That’s all I can say.”
He also said that he loves playing press man coverage, noting that “there is nothing better than being on the island by yourself.” In terms of coverage schemes, Lewis loves “Cover 3 or Cover 1,” whether he is backed off or in press.
In another question about his mentality as a player, Lewis discussed what goes through his head when gearing up to make a tackle on a ball carrier.
“Hit him as hard as possible and get the ball out, or force him back inside. Nothing else is needed. Helmets, clank! All I need.”
Gearing up for College Football
Shifting gears from previous questions, Lewis said he wanted to improve on communication when asked about what he wants to improve at the college level.
“Communication is something I can work on. Being more vocal on the field. I’m not really a talkative guy, but I have to be more vocal heading into college.”
In the interview’s final question, Lewis said he would want Richard Sherman to be his mentor out of any player, past or present, at his position. The cornerback said Sherman is the “best trash talker” and “best everything” at the position, explicitly mentioning the former Seahawk’s versatility on the boundary.
From only a few short questions, it is evident that Lewis has the mentality to be a great player at the college level. Combined with his upper-tier play on the field, Lewis is a player FAU and college football fans in general should keep their eye on.
