FAU vs. ECU 2025 Preview: Owls look to finish season strong against East Carolina

FAU Football, Florida Atlantic Owls, The League Winners

The Florida Atlantic Owls welcome the East Carolina Pirates to Boca Raton on Saturday afternoon in what should be an explosive American Conference matchup. Coming off a loss to UTSA, the Pirates have to win to keep their extremely slim conference championship hopes alive. They have an impressive offense and an opportunistic defense that, while not the best overall unit, can capitalize on their opponents’ mistakes. Bowl eligibility is out of the question, but FAU still has a chance to finish the 2025 season strong.

Let’s dive into this FAU vs. ECU 2025 college football preview.

FAU Owls vs. ECU Pirates: 2025 College Football Preview

Game History

Over the course of the Owls and Pirates playing each other, FAU has not yet achieved a victory.

In three total games, East Carolina is 3-0 against FAU in their series that started off in 2013. The 2024 matchup saw East Carolina roll past the Owls, as the Pirates won by a score of 49-14. ECU quarterback Katin Houser lit up the scoreboard in the game, throwing for 343 yards and five touchdowns on 17 completions.

Key Players for FAU Owls

There could be a case to highlight the entire Florida Atlantic football team for this week, regardless of what side of the ball it is.

Offensively, the key players for the Owls are quarterback Caden Veltkamp and the team’s wideouts. East Carolina is middle of the pack against the pass, which should leave FAU with a lot of room to exploit on Saturday. Veltkamp had one of the best games of his 2025 season last week against UConn, racking up 494 yards, two passing touchdowns, and two rushing touchdowns. He kept the offense on schedule, made big plays all over the field, and was a key component in the team’s furious comeback effort in the game.

For all of his flaws, Veltkamp has been arguably the main reason FAU has continued to score points and rack up yardage. He is quick with his decision-making and can be very accurate all over the field. Veltkamp also consistently challenges secondaries down the field, as evidenced by his 18 big-time throws this season.

To conquer the Pirates, the Owls will need Veltkamp at his best. He will have to avoid the turnover-worthy plays (22 on the season) and sacks, while maintaining accuracy. If he can do that, Velkamp should help the Owls compete at an extremely high level on Saturday.

Alongside Veltkamp, FAU needs all of its dynamic wideouts to be at their best on Saturday.

Easton Messer, Jayshon Platt, Asaad Waseem, and Dom Henry have all posted at least 500 yards this season. All four players have shown great route running and explosiveness against a variety of opponents. Head coach Zach Kittley has been able to deploy his weapons in a variety of ways due to their versatility. It’s allowed explosive play opportunities consistently.

East Carolina has the potential to struggle immensely against good passing attacks. If the receivers, along with Veltkamp, do their job, the Owls should be able to provide punches consistently on Saturday and compete against the Pirates.

Defensively, the Owls’ secondary needs to be ready to roll against one of the best passing games in the American Conference.

Katin Houser, on a 65.5-percent completion rate, has 3045 yards and 17 touchdowns this season. He has made 24 big-time throws with an ADOT of 9.3 this season. Anthony Smith and Yannick Smith, among others, have been very effective deep down the field and have also shown a solid ability to make defenders miss in the open field.

Terez Reid, as he usually does, needs to lead the Owls in providing solid coverage all over the field. The rest of the unit, ranging from Chris Keys Jr. to Jayden Sweeney, needs to limit explosive plays and provide sticky coverage when needed. It, in all honesty, needs to be one of the best efforts that the Owls’ secondary has provided this season. How this unit fares in the game will likely impact FAU’s ultimate outcome on Saturday.

Key Players for ECU Pirates

For the Pirates, key players are quarterback Katin Houser and safety Ja’Marley Riddle.

Houser, as mentioned above, has been lethal down the field for the Pirates this season. Holding an overall 84.7 PFF passing grade, the quarterback has an elite 95.7 PFF passing grade on passes 20+ yards down the field. He has seven touchdowns of 20 yards or more, 939 yards on those same passes, and only two turnover-worthy plays in this area.

FAU has been better against the pass than run, but they have struggled against offenses that can rattle off explosive plays at will. If Houser is at his best on Saturday, ECU will have a great shot to win the game.

Defensively, Riddle’s multifaceted game will help attack a very difficult FAU offensive scheme. As a run defender, Riddle has 23 run stops and 48 tackles. In coverage, Riddle has three pass breakups and two interceptions, both marks that lead the Pirates.

The Owls not only use the running attack frequently, but also challenge defenses in space with their various upper-level wideouts. Riddle will need to be a great tackler and coverage player to help mitigate the damage of the Owls’ passing attack; otherwise, it may be a long day.

Keys to Victory: FAU Owls

Eliminate the Turnovers

To beat a team like East Carolina, the Owls cannot commit turnovers. Florida Atlantic needs to play a clean game of football from start to finish. They have the ability to do so, but have struggled to string together a full game. Without that, FAU will be in trouble.

Tackle Well

For the defense, nothing will work without true tackling effort. They have to eliminate explosive plays in the run game and stop the ECU wideouts from racking up big gains after the catch. It has been a massive issue for FAU in all of their losses this season. If they want to win this game, this aspect needs to change for the Owls.

Finish Strong

To head into 2026 on a good note, the Owls need to finish strong. No matter the ultimate outcome, FAU needs to play well on every side of the ball.

Keys to Victory: ECU Pirates

Drag FAU into Deep Water on Offense

The Owls have struggled massively against explosive offenses all season. East Carolina has all of the elements to drag FAU into deep water and force them to play ball with the Pirates. If they hit big plays and do enough on the ground, ECU should be in a great spot.

Force the Owls into Mistakes

FAU has made a wide array of mistakes on every side of the ball. The offense has had a large number of turnover-worthy plays, the defense has gotten gashed by ground and by air, and the special teams have cost the team points. ECU, by playing their game and not getting outside themselves, need to force the Owls into mistakes. If they can force one or two turnovers, the Pirates will likely win this game.
