After a great victory over the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers, the Panthers dropped their “Vice Night” game against the Kennesaw State Owls last week. Now after a bye week, the Panthers are set to square off against the Missouri State Bears, one of the newest members of Conference USA and the FBS. The Bears are 4-3 overall with a 2-1 conference record. And, they have found some success on both sides of the ball through their first seven games of the season.
The Panthers, heading to Springfield for their last #WeekdayCUSA game of the season, stack up very well against the Bears in this matchup. But to truly come out of this game with a win, FIU needs to find its consistency and upper-level execution that it has displayed at various points of the season. With that, let’s dive into this FIU vs. Missouri State 2025 preview.
FIU Panthers vs. Missouri State Bears: Game History
In what is a rarity in college football, the Bears and Panthers have yet to face off against each other. Wednesday night’s game will be the first-ever matchup between FIU and Missouri State, beginning what could be a very fun series between two Conference USA members going forward. In the history of their program, Missouri State has a 492–532–39 record and has won 10 different conference championships.
FIU vs. Missouri State 2025 Preview: Keys to the Game
Key Players for FIU
In this game, key players for the Panthers are Kejon Owens, Eric Nelson, Johnny Chaney Jr., and Brian Blades II.
Offensively, the Panthers utilize running back Owens as the centerpiece of their scheme and overall unit. On the season, Owens has 823 yards and seven touchdowns on 7.0 yards per attempt. He has 547 yards after contact, 37 missed tackles forced, and 20 runs of over 10 yards or more. Simply put, Owens has been one of the best running backs in the country and powered FIU all throughout the 2025 season.
Missouri State does not have the worst run defense, but they have not been great either. The unit has allowed -0.01 EPA per rush so far in 2025. With the blocking FIU is capable of, Owens is in store for another very productive game this week. More so than that, the Panthers will be in a great position to win.
Alongside Owens, Nelson is a key player to watch in the wide receiver room. Breaking out against Kennesaw State last week, Nelson has some of the best pure talent on the Panthers. He has good athleticism, understands how to run his routes, and can make a variety of different plays as a pass catcher. When he was on the field against the Owls, good things happened for Nelson and the Panthers’ offense as a whole.
It remains to be seen how much FIU will deploy Nelson against the Bears, especially with him being one of the younger contributors on the team. However, Nelson’s talent is undeniable. If the Panthers want their offense to be at its full potential, it may be time to start deploying Nelson even more this week.
Defensively, Chaney and Blades stand out for me in two different ways.
Chaney, a linebacker, leads the Panthers with 64 tackles and 27 defensive stops through seven games. He has been a key component of not only the team’s run defense, but also their passing defense in shorter areas of the field and against TEs/RBs. Against Missouri State, Chaney will likely be asked to play a big role in stopping Shomari Lawrence as both a runner and a pass catcher. Chaney will also have to be ready to make plays at a high clip all over the field, especially if the defensive line shows some of the inconsistencies that they did against Kennesaw State.
Blades, the Panthers’ shut-down cornerback, has only allowed 10 receptions on 15 targets for 131 yards. He has been sticky against all types of wideouts this season. In the rare times he has been challenged down the field, Blades has risen to the occasion.
Missouri State has multiple targets that they utilize at the wide receiver position at all different areas of the field. No matter who he is up against, Blades will need to play at a high level and help elevate the rest of the Panthers’ secondary. It remains to be seen how the rest of the FIU secondary will fare on Wednesday night. However, it is a good bet that Blades will play at a high level, and that should help the team’s chances in the game.
Key Players for Missouri State
For Missouri State, two key players for this game are quarterback Jacob Clark and defensive lineman Mitchell Toney.
Clark, a veteran player for the Bears, has been racking up numbers at a high level this season. Even with some missed time due to injury, Clark has 1,460 passing yards and 11 touchdowns on a completion percentage of 64.2. He has 13 big-time throws, an ADOT of 9.8, and an average time to throw of 2.83 seconds. On the other hand, Clark also has eight interceptions and ten turnover-worthy plays.
The quarterback has had some struggles at times. However, he is a major reason why the Bears have a winning record up to this point in their first season at the FBS level. Clark will have a decent challenge against the FIU secondary on Wednesday, as the Panthers have a fun combination of players all over the field. But if the quarterback can execute at a high level and avoid mistakes, the Bears should be in a good spot to compete.
On defense, Mitchell Toney has been one of the best run defenders and pass rushers for the Bears this season. Against the run, Toney has 13 run stops, 14 tackles, and has registered a 78.6 run defense grade. As a pass rusher, the defensive end has 13 pressures, two sacks, and has a 75.4 pass rushing grade.
The Bears will need Toney to be at his best against the Panthers. FIU can run the ball on the level of the best teams in the country, and has seen their passing attack make improvements week after week. It will be a very tough task for the Bears this week, to say the least. But with Toney playing at a high level, the Bears will be able to maintain a high floor on defense.
Keys to Victory: FIU Panthers
For the Panthers to win this week, here is what they need to accomplish
Tackle Soundly
A major part of FIU’s issues last week was that the defense did not tackle with the same fundamentals as they did in their wins. The effort was there, but the Panthers did not execute well, and it allowed Kennesaw State to score more times than they likely should have. Against Missouri State this week, the Panthers have to tackle better. There are no excuses for this area not to be better this week for FIU. How they fare in this category will likely impact the result of the game.
Emphasize the Little Details
In the games FIU has won this year, they have executed the little details at a high level. In the games they have lost, the little details have been a major issue. To be at their best against the Bears, the Panthers need to play a clean game and execute the little details very well. They need to tackle well, execute their blocks, catch the ball, and avoid penalties. If they do that, the Panthers will be in a great position to win.
Execute at a High Level
FIU has, from an on-field perspective, executed at a high level for the majority of the season. They have made steady growth on offense and defense; despite some highs and lows, the Panthers have taken steps to consistently put themselves in a position to win every game that they are in. Against Missouri State, the Panthers need to ensure that they continue on this path. The run game needs to continue to roll, while the passing game needs to pair its newfound execution with avoiding drops and miscues. The defense needs to not only tackle, but also ensure that its communication is on point. And, most of all, the penalties need to be kept at a minimum. FIU has everything they need to win this game against Missouri State; to ensure that the best result comes to pass, though, they need to rebound from their loss and play their best game possible from an execution standpoint.
