Florida vs. Georgia Game 2025 Recap: The Bulldogs Escape with 24-20 Win in the Swamp

Florida Gators, Florida Football, Georgia Football, Georgia Bulldogs, The League Winners

In the annual game between Florida and Georgia, both the Gators and Bulldogs performed at a high level. The offenses scored relatively well, the defenses made big plays, and the special teams executed when called upon. But when crunch time came, a familiar scene unfolded for both sides. The Bulldogs rose to the occasion, tightening the screws on defense and scoring what ended up being the decisive touchdown in the game. Florida, on the other hand, could not execute when called upon and when they could have truly swung the game in their favor. As a result, Georgia was able to prevail by a score of 24-20. With that in mind, let’s dive into this Florida vs. Georgia 2025 college football game recap.

Florida vs. Georgia 2025 College Football Recap

Georgia Rises to the Occasion and Florida Falters

When Florida and Georgia play each other, the game usually feels like a high-level boxing match. And in 2025’s edition, that was most definitely the case.

Over the first three quarters, the Bulldogs and Gators exchanged a series of punches and counterpunches on every side of the ball. If Georgia had a score, Florida answered right back. If the Gators got a key stop, the Bulldogs responded with one of their own. If one team hit a big-time field goal or had a field-flipping punt, the opposition responded in the same manner. It is through this close-quarters brawl that, entering the fourth quarter, this game was even at 17.

But in that pivotal quarter, Georgia delivered the punches that ended up being the knockout against Florida.

Taking a 20-17 lead early in the fourth quarter, the Gators’ defense had a huge stop against the Bulldogs. Tyreak Sapp had a key pressure on first down, Bryce Thornton had great coverage on second down, and George Gumbs Jr. had a sack that forced a punt from Georgia. And, at least initially, the Gators were rolling on offense. Jadan Baugh was churning out yardage on the ground, while DJ Lagway executed as a passer and runner when needed.

However, the Gators ran into a brick wall once they got into the red zone. On three consecutive plays, the Georgia run defense slammed the door shut on the Florida rushing attack. CJ Allen stuffed a run attempt from KD Daniels, followed by a run from Lagway that Ellis Robinson IV and Zion Branch completely snuffed out. And on fourth down, Florida had no shot, as a terrible play call saw Baugh get stuffed by a handful of Bulldogs.

Almost on queue, the Georgia defense found a rhythm. Zachariah Branch got loose for multiple chunk gains, including an 18-yard gain on a pivotal 3rd-and-8. Nate Frazier had some very effective runs and a catch, which helped keep Georgia on schedule. And then, finally, the big play hit for Georgia.

Running back Chauncey Bowens found a seam, made a defender miss, and raced for a 36-yard touchdown. It flipped the game on its head and gave Georgia the firm upper hand it needed, gaining the 24-20 lead.

Football games are decided on the thinnest of margins. Small mistakes, errors, and even missed calls can swing a game in a variety of different directions.

Georgia and Florida are two highly talented teams, and there is not a significant separation between the two rosters in many ways. However, there is a reason that the Gators and Bulldogs are heading in opposite directions. Georgia, under the direction of Kirby Smart, has the culture and roster to overcome any adversity thrown their way. They may have major struggles early in games, but due to the talent and leadership in the program, the Bulldogs can do whatever they set their minds to.

Florida, at least for now, is a program without a direction. They are talented, but do not have the ability to overcome adversity in the same way as the best teams in the league.

The Talent Shines Through

For Georgia, Zachariah Branch and Chauncey Bowens stood out in a major way. Branch, a USC transfer, was the favorite target of Gunner Stockton. He ran great routes, was dynamic after the catch, and even made big plays through contact. For large swaths of the game, Florida could not contain the dynamic wideout. In total, Branch posted 10 receptions for 112 yards for the Bulldogs, leading the team by a considerable margin in both categories.

Bowens, used sparingly by the Bulldogs this year, essentially served as the closer for Georgia in this game. Leading the team in rushing with 70 yards and 7.8 yards per carry, his 36-yard score was the score that won the game for the Bulldogs. He is smooth in space, with no issues running past or through defenders. Georgia’s offense changed when Bowens was on the field, and as this year progresses, Bowens is going to turn into a star.

Defensively, Zion Branch, Raylen Wilson, and CJ Allen led the charge.

Branch, while providing average production in coverage, was an excellent run defender. Flying all over the field for the Bulldogs, the defensive back notched six tackles and two defensive stops against the Gators.

Wilson was even better for Georgia. The linebacker displayed great instincts and speed in the run game, notching eight total tackles and three defensive stops.

The true best of the group, though, was CJ Allen. The stat line for the linebacker was ridiculous, as he notched 13 tackles, seven defensive stops, and a quarterback hit. What was more impressive was the athletic ability, intelligence, and instincts of Allen. The linebacker not only read plays, but shut them down when they were in his direction. He was a force for the Bulldogs all day, perfectly displayed when he single-handedly prevented a touchdown run from DJ Lagway. In short, Allen is an NFL standout in the making, and he showed that all day long.

For Florida, we will start with the defense as well.

Bryce Thornton was a force for the Gators in every possible way against Georgia. Notching six tackles, four defensive stops, two pressures, a tackle for loss, and a pass breakup, it was a positive thing for Florida when the Bulldogs tried to test the defensive back.

Outside of Thornton, Jordan Castell was a force in the run game, too. Flying downhill from the secondary on multiple occasions, the defensive back displayed great speed and tackling on his way to 11 total tackles and one pass rushing pressure. George Gumbs Jr., Michai Boireau, and Tyreak Sapp were the standouts in the trenches. Between their ability as pass rushers and run defenders, they did a great job keeping the Gators in the game. Specifically relating to Sapp and Gumbs Jr., they never gave up on a play and always looked to finish things off.

Offensively, the key standouts were Jadan Baugh, Eugen Wilson III, and the overall offensive line.

Totaling 72 yards and a touchdown on 4.8 yards per carry, Baugh showed off a little bit of everything against Georgia. He had the shiftiness to avoid tacklers and the strength to run through them. He got skinny through lanes and outran defenders when needed, keeping the defense off balance. Baugh even contributed a contested catch as a pass-catcher and did not give up a pressure on seven attempts. In short, the running back is a star on the rise, and you need to take notice now.

Wilson was electric for the Gators in Week 10. Posting nine receptions for 121 yards and a touchdown, the wideout was borderline unguardable at times today. Wilson had great hands, smooth route running, and electric speed. He knew how to get behind defenses, settle in space, and even make plays through contact when necessary. If healthy, Wilson could see his stock take off like a rocket ship. Not many wideouts have his speed combined with a good understanding of the game.

The offensive line, led by Jake Slaughter and Austin Barber, was not credited with allowing a sack and only surrendered two pressures. Against a tough Georgia defense, the performance was very much needed for a team that has seen its trench play be very inconsistent in 2025.

The last player to mention in this section is DJ Lagway. The Florida quarterback had some incredible plays against Georgia, including the touchdown to Eugene Wilson III that a select handful of quarterbacks could make. However, he made some maddening ones too, which included missing multiple wide-open receivers for touchdowns.

Lagway has the potential to be one of the best, if not the best, quarterbacks in college football. To get there, though, he needs to find a way to be more consistent and work to improve his overall game. The talent will always shine through, as he showed today. But to make sure it is a constant beam of light, Lagway needs to put a lot of work into every area of his game.

2026 NFL Draft: Stock Raisers

CJ Allen, LB, Georgia: CJ Allen is an NFL talent, and that is an understatement. Between the speed, instincts, and overall ability, there may be some teams that would take Allen right now and play him Sunday. Until then, though, the linebacker is going to wreck games for the Bulldogs.

Jake Slaughter, C, Florida: Watching the game live, it felt like the offensive line was rolling for Florida in this game. As it turns out, Slaughter was a huge reason for that, as usual. The center has allowed three total pressures this season and has been very solid in the run game. Against Georgia, Slaughter did not allow any pressures and opened up huge lanes for the likes of Lagway and Baugh in the running game. It is time to pencil “The Butcher”(just work with me here) onto an NFL roster for the foreseeable future.
