FSU Football: No Letdown for Seminoles in Week 2

Florida State Seminoles, FSU, the league winners

The Florida State Seminoles won a huge matchup in Week 1 against Alabama. How would the FSU football team respond in Week 2 against FCS opponent, East Texas A&M Lions? The Seminoles came out focused and jumped on the Lions early, not letting up.

FSU vs. East Texas A&M Week 2 Recap

Staying Aggressive

FSU made sure to come out focused and not take their FCS opponent for granted. The first drive was methodical, with 11 out of 12 plays as runs. The Seminoles went for it on fourth down twice on the drive and paid it off with a short rushing touchdown. FSU would not just pound the football to get the game over, however.

The second drive started with an 82-yard touchdown to Duce Robinson. Tommy Castellanos and the FSU offense would continue to test the Lions’ defense through the air. In one and a half quarters, Castellanos threw for 230 yards and three touchdowns. The Seminoles would stay aggressive in the second quarter, going for it on fourth down. Gus Malzahn would call a perfect play action rollout where Gavin Sawchuk snuck out for a wide open pass that turned into a 53-yard touchdown.

Duce Robinson Coming out Party

The receivers were not involved much in the big win against Alabama. After the second drive, Malzahn and FSU wanted to get the passing game going.

Duce Robinson showed off his speed on his first touchdown, and with the next, he made a great one-handed catch in the back of the endzone. Castellanos threw a jump ball where Robinson fought threw contact and made a highlight catch.

Robinson would finish the day with five catches for 173 yards and two touchdowns. It was against inferior competition but it puts on tape what the offense can do, so they can not just load up on the run.

Running Back Rotation

Through two games, it looks like the running back snap share will change from game-to-game. Jaylin Lucas was very involved against Alabama, but he did not get a touch in Week 2 until six minutes left in the second quarter. The game was well in hand, but he was given four carries on the drive after Castellanos and the starters were taken out.

Caziah Holmes saw carries on the first drive, along with Ousmane Kromah and Gavin Sawchuk. After Kromah could not get in the endzone after a couple runs up the middle, Sawchuk scored the first touchdown. Sawchuk had the most carries with the starters, finishing with eight carries for 35 yards.

Meanwhile, Micah Danzy is not going to get a ton of touches, but when he does he is electric. He has been utilized on reverses and had another touchdown for 53 yards in Week 2. Kromah looks like the second back right now but he gets better each year and could be the main back later in the season.

Defense Dominant Again

Last week against SMU, the Lions were able to move the ball but turnovers stopped them from scoring. In this game they were shut down, finishing with only 197 total yards. The Seminoles shut down the option run and did not allow Lions’ star receiver Christian Jourdain to get anything going.

Earl Little Jr. played ball hawk and intercepted a pass in the middle of the field and had a nice 48-yard return to set up the FSU offense. Jeremiah Wilson also had an interception when he jumped a short route by the Lions.

Young Players Get Some Run

The main goal of this football game was to get up early, so the underclassmen on FSU can get some time. Because of that, there were many “first” touchdowns for FSU players in this contest.

Kromah will see plenty of time, but he did get his first college touchdown with a 43-yard score on a wheel route. Meanwhile, freshman quarterback Kevin Sperry got his first touchdown late in the first half to freshman Jayvan Boggs. The second half was dominated with runs by sophomore Cam Davis and Samuel Singleton, who scored a 53-yard touchdown.

What’s next in Week 3?

There was not much to gain from this game other than the Gus Malzahn offense is explosive and has plenty of different weapons. There were six touchdowns of 40 yards or more and eight different players scored.

The Seminoles get another inferior opponent in Week 3 as Kent State travels to Tallahassee. This should be another game to get a big lead and let the younger players continue to get playing time for development.
