Bye weeks are upon us so identifying bench players with positive matchups is key. Let’s see what the GameDay Edge stats help us learn about the matchups in Week 5. I hope you have had a chance to take a look at the positional GameDay Edge matchup tool by The League Winners to gain you an edge on your weekly fantasy football matchups. If not go check it out here.
The GameDay Edge tool combines volume and productivity by players into one matchup score. As the season goes on, the tool will gain better correlation. The tool is meant to help uncover matchups that might have the potential to boom which are not evident intuitively. It’s early in the season and teams are still incorporating some new players and/or schemes. By now, the sample size will help correlate better. Use this as a gauge to identify high-volume plays.
Week 5 GameDay Edge Passing Game Tidbits
- The Philadelphia Eagles have given up the sixth most fantasy points to wide receivers. The Eagles control the clock (4th-highest), allow low rush attempts (3rd-lowest), and shut down the run (5th-lowest). This forces opponents to pass frequently against them resulting in good volume. In Week 5, they face the Rams, bringing their league-leading 41.5 pass attempts per game. Puka Nacua should continue to storm the league and could have a huge game in. Tutu Atwell is a great flex option this week as well. Check out the WR heat map here.
- Teams have not been passing against the Raiders much and most stats show the Raiders’ pass defense being middle-of-the-pack. Yet they keep coming up as a good QB-WR matchup to play against. The reason is they are not generating many negative plays (sacks and interceptions) against opposing offenses while giving up passing touchdowns. This is evident by their 7.1 ANY/A which ties Miami for the fourth-highest. Look for the gunslinger Jordan Love and his wide receivers to post great numbers in Week 5.
- The New York Jets – Denver Broncos game features the two-worst defenses giving up the most points to tight ends. I trust Tyler Conklin role more than any Bronco tight end role. Conklin could be a sneaky good TE streamer for week 5.
Week 5 GameDay Edge Rushing Game Tidbits
- Only four teams have given up FOUR receiving touchdowns to opposing running backs, while the rest of the league hasn’t given up more than two. Those teams are the Arizona Cardinals, Chicago Bears, and Denver Broncos. However, their Week 5 opponents have not been targeting running backs at a high rate. The New York Jets have said they won’t limit Breece Hall‘s snaps this week. If he gets targeted, this is a good blow-up spot for him against the Broncos. In the Washington Commanders case, the Chicago Bears’ rush score is high as well. Look for Brian Robinson to continue to feast. If Antonio Gibson stops fumbling, he would be a good flex play this week.
- David Montgomery should feast again facing the Carolina Panthers who give up 4.7 yards per rush and allowed second-highest rush touchdowns with six. As for Jahmyr Gibbs, if you’re thinking of benching him, you should reconsider. He could find the endzone this week. The Detroit Lions have the best rush matchup.
- In Week 4, the Raiders got Josh Jacobs involved in the passing attack with 11 targets catapulting him to first for season-long targets. Their Week 5 opponent, the Green Bay Packers, have given up the third-most receptions to running backs with a total of 26 at 6.92 yards per reception. Josh Jacobs could be a League Winner this week.
