Georgia Southern is one of the few Sun Belt Conference teams that did not experience mass transfer portal casualties and did not have to rely on the portal to bring in new talent. However, the Eagles have made a few additions through the transfer portal for the upcoming season. One in particular that stands out is former Auburn wide receiver Camden Brown.
Georgia Southern Football: Who is Camden Brown?
Camden Brown comes from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, where high school football is as competitive as it gets. He was 6-foot-3 by his senior year, weighing in at 200 pounds, and running a 4.5-second 40-yard dash.
Brown put up an impressive 24 catches for 483 yards and nine touchdowns in his final high school season. He helped lead his team to the State Finals, where they would win their third consecutive Class 7A championship. This earned Brown a four-star recruit ranking through Rivals and 247 ranked him as the 66th-best wideout in the nation.
Coupled with his speed and size, Brown became one of the more sought-after recruits. He received offers from Auburn, Georgia, Florida State, Ole Miss, Pittsburgh, and many more P4 schools. He ultimately chose Auburn, however, primarily because of his strong relationship with their wide receiver coach Eric Keisau – and an early opportunity for playing time.
SEC Experience
In his first year with the Tigers, Camden Brown played every regular season game and accumulated nine receptions for a total of 123 yards, averaging almost 14 yards per catch with two touchdowns.
As a sophomore, production went slightly up while his efficiency went down. However, as a junior last season, Brown saw his worst statistical year. He tallied just seven receptions for 61 total yards, averaging almost nine yards per catch.
However, major element that Brown brings is his availability. The receiver did not miss a single game for Auburn and never suffered any serious injuries. His only documented injuries post-high school were during the 2023 spring sessions and would cause Brown to miss the entirety of camp. Yet, he would not miss a single regular-season game that year. Brown only got six starts with the Tigers but played in every regular-season game for three straight years.
Fitting into the Georgia Southern Offense
Now, Camden Brown is ready for his senior year in Statesboro, where he will likely compete with Josh Dallas and Joshua Thompson for slot receiver reps.
Dallas is an established redshirt sophomore for the Eagles and is close to Brown’s build, standing at 6-foot-2 and weighing 200 pounds. He is also a prominent player on special teams, returning eight punts for 73 total yards. So, having some real depth at the position could help take some of the load off Dallas’ shoulders.
Dallas also logged an impressive 516 snaps on offense last year compared to Thompson’s 27, suggesting the Eagles were too reliant on one slot instead of being able to utilize both while maintaining Dallas’ efficiency. For every one of Thompson’s 27 offensive snaps, Dallas was also on the field. That means the Eagles are not scared to put two slot receivers out there.
Brown will not only allow for Dallas to get a breather, but he also allows the offense to be more unpredictable – forcing defenders to worry about both receivers. That should help open the Eagles’ offense and create big play opportunities.
Early Impact in Spring Ball
In the Eagles annual Blue-White Spring game, Camden Brown made his presence known early by catching the game’s first touchdown, thrown by starting JC French.
Pat Tilman for WJCL-Savannah asked French what he thought of his brand new weapon in a recent interview with the quarterback.
“He can do it all, he’s a big body, he’s fast,” said French regarding Brown.
After navigating a crowded depth chart and a lack of opportunity, Brown has already shown the Eagles he is more than a promising portal acquisition. He is a play-maker and he has been ready to play. And, if given an opportunity, Brown could make a lasting impact at Georgia Southern this season.
