Georgia Southern vs. James Madison 2025: Keys, Players, and Predictions

Georgia Southern, Georgia Southern Eagles, the league winners

The Georgia Southern Eagles prepare to face their first conference opponent, James Madison, in Virginia. The Dukes enter the game 2-1, with wins over Liberty (31-13) and Weber State (45-10) in their season opener. It’s worth noting that James Madison started 14-0 against Louisville but was unable to capitalize and pull off the major upset, giving up four unanswered touchdowns to lose 28-14. James Madison opened at 12.5-point favorites, but the line has since moved up to 17, suggesting early action on the Dukes. This is a Week 5 showdown between Georgia Southern vs. James Madison, so let’s dive into this 2025 preview.

Georgia Southern Eagles vs. James Madison Dukes: Matchup History

This is the 12th time James Madison will play Georgia Southern. The Eagles hold a series record of 9-2 against the Dukes, but are 3-2 when playing in Virginia. Last season, Georgia Southern got off to a hot start and were able to win the game 28-14, extending their home record to 6-0 against the Dukes.

Georgia Southern vs. James Madison 2025 Preview: Keys, Players, and Predictions

Key Players for James Madison

The biggest point of attack for James Madison will be its rushing offense. The Dukes have three running backs with over 100 yards on the season. Their starting tailback, Wayne Knight, has well over 200, while averaging three receptions per game. The Eagles run defense has been rough thus far, but it has been seriously tested. Every opponent Georgia Southern has faced used multiple rushers to keep the defense disciplined, and the Dukes will be no different. George Pettaway and Ayo Adeyi serve as Knight’s backups, but Pettaway is also used in the passing game with four receptions this year.

The Dukes quarterback Alonza Barnett III is a stud. The six-foot junior already has 445 passing yards in just three games, throwing for over 100 yards in each contest with only one interception against Liberty. Barnett’s real impact, however, comes on the ground. Barnett has three rushing touchdowns on the season and will be a pivotal piece to the Dukes’ red-zone game plan. James Madison has been incredibly efficient in the red zone so far this season, scoring eleven out of their thirteen trips.

The last part of the Duke offense that will be necessary for James Madison to win will be wide receiver Landon Ellis. Ellis only averages 2.7 receptions per game, but also averages 14.4 yards per reception, with 115 receiving yards. Ellis is a chain-mover on later downs, but the Dukes typically look for him early in a drive when they can take more of a risk downfield. With two touchdowns already, expect Ellis to be another red-zone target.

On defense, the James Madison coverage unit is ranked second in the country for passing yards allowed per game, and allowed Louisville to throw for only 150 yards. Duke defensive back Jacob Thomas has eight tackles, one TFL and one sack on the season and will more than likely line up against Camden Brown, which would be a phenomenal matchup. The Dukes are also 15th in the country in offensive touchdowns allowed.

Key Players for Georgia Southern

The Eagles offense will need to click. It is fair to imagine that Georgia Southern may be playing from behind in this game, given the large spread. However, that may not pose as big of a problem as fans might think. Quarterback JC French has continued to play outstanding through his first four games. It certainly helps when French can rely on wide receivers Dalen Cobb and Camden Brown to make plays. This offense has every ability to play from behind without worrying about changing the gameplan.

The Georgia Southern defense continues to be the main talking point. However, this defense is improving every week. Although Maine is an FCS program, it is still impressive to hold a team to 10 points. The halftime adjustments clearly worked, and the run defense looked much better in this contest.

Defensive lineman MJ Stroud just had a stellar performance against Maine with three solo tackles, 2.5 sacks and 3.5 TFLs. Meanwhile, defensive back Justin Meyers also played great against the Black Bears with four solo tackles and a pass breakup. Both Stroud and Meyers were pivotal in the Eagles improved rush defense, with Meyers coming downhill to fill gaps quickly and Stroud bullying his way through the offensive line.

2025 Game Preview: How Georgia Southern Can Win This Game

To win this game, Georgia Southern will need to execute better than they have up to this point. The Eagles will have to limit penalties after putting up their season-high of eight last week. JC French will also have to take good care of the ball. Although the pick-six last week was more of a defensive play than an offensive mistake, French knows that cannot happen against the Dukes. If the Eagles’ offense can attack this incredible Duke passing defense efficiently and safely, the Eagles should have no issues covering the spread and potentially pulling off the upset.

The Duke defense is not impossible to stop, but it will be a great challenge for this Eagle offense. Georgia Southern cannot be afraid to attack downfield but they will also need to establish the run game. Expect Dalen Cobb to be used as a rusher, with backup quarterback Weston Bryan to be utilized.

When asked about potentially redshirting the freshman quarterback, Coach Helton mentioned in last week’s postgame press conference that Bryan, “wants to play the year, he wants to help this team win.”

Final Prediction: 30-27, Georgia Southern
