The Georgia Southern Eagles finally captured their first win of the season in the home opener against Jacksonville State, bringing their record to 1-2. Now, it’s a Week 4 matchup in this Georgia Southern vs. Maine showdown – and we’re here to preview this intriguing 2025 showdown. This contest is in Statesboro as the Eagles host the 0-3 Black Bears.
Georgia Southern Eagles vs. Maine Black Bears: Football History
Georgia Southern has played Maine four times. Each contest was held at Paulson, and the Eagles have won all four times. The most recent meeting was in 2019, which resulted in a 26-18 victory for Georgia Southern. Currently, the only platform with a betting line on this game is FanDuel, who has Georgia Southern as 26.5-point favorites.
The Maine Black Bears are an FCS program (Football Championship Subdivision), meaning they cannot compete for bowl opportunities because they are not in the FBS (Football Bowl Subdivision). Instead, they compete for a FCS playoff spot amongst other teams in that subdivision. Maine had two FBS schools on their schedule this year: Georgia Southern and Liberty. Liberty beat Maine 28-7, but the scoring was actually started by the Black Bears. Maine running back Sincere Baines scored their lone touchdown on a 77-yard rush and may prove to be a formidable foe for the Georgia Southern defense. Maine’s other two losses were one-score affairs that came down to the final drive.
This will be another good test for this Eagles defensive unit. While it is true this defense has been inefficient at stopping the run, it is also important to consider that it is only the fourth week of a long season. Fresno State had a great run game under head coach Matt Entz and Lincoln Riley has a million weapons at USC. Jacksonville State harbors Cam Cook, who has the fourth-most yards and carries in the country. Not to mention, he’s also sixth in total yards per game while only averaging 1.7 receptions per game. The Eagles have seen nothing but talented offenses to start their year which could prove beneficial down the stretch.
Georgia Southern vs. Maine 2025 Preview: Keys, Players, and Predictions
Keys for the Black Bears
The Black Bears have a phenomenal running back in Sincere Baines. The junior running already has two 50-yard rushes, one being the aforementioned 77-yard touchdown against Liberty. Through the first three games, Baines has 40 carries for about 310 rushing yards and one touchdown. Baines has also already put up two 100+ yard performances, one being against an FBS opponent. There should be no question he will continue to have success and will be a key component to their offense. Coach Helton and the Eagles will have Baines circled in the gameplan as the player they will need to stop. If the Black Bears want any chance to pull off the upset, Baines will need another big performance.
Starting quarterback Carter Peevy is also a dynamic weapon for the Black Bears. In their second game against William and Mary, Peevy’s talent was on full display. He had 12 carries for 98 yards and a rushing touchdown. After Jacksonville State found so much success with dual-threat quarterback Gavin Wimsatt’s legs near the goal line, expect Maine to try and emulate that with their own dual-threat.
A dark horse for the Black Bears will be the backup running back Rashawn Marshall. Although a backup, Marshall got the same amount of carries against Liberty as Baines did (11) and had the same amount of carries that Peevy had against William and Mary (12). After Fresno State found so much success against the Eagles using their three-back rotations, expect Maine to incorporate both of these backs as much as they can to keep Baines’ legs fresh and the Eagle defense honest.
Keys for the Eagles
The biggest key for the Eagles, every week, will be their defensive unit. Georgia Southern has struggled defensively all year. While it may be more indicative of the offenses they play against, the defense is still the biggest area of concern. After facing a gauntlet of offensive minds, the Eagles get an objectively easier game against an FCS opponent and need to show they are able to stop the run. Sincere Baines will not make it easy, but if the Eagles are able to shut him down it will be a promising sign heading into conference play.
The second key for Georgia Southern will be JC French. French has played unbelievably in the first three games of the season, and fans should expect that to continue. Auburn transfer wide receiver Camden Brown should be able to get open all night for French. But even if Maine decides to take him away, JC has plenty of weapons.
The final key for the Eagles will be wide receiver Dalen Cobb. Cobb’s performance has elevated every game and this trend should continue. The Georgia Southern Senior had an incredible game against Jacksonville State, putting up 82 yards on six receptions to go with his 95-yard kickoff return touchdown. If the Black Bears worry too much about Brown, Cobb will make sure they regret it.
It is important to note that wide receiver Josh Dallas remains questionable after missing last week due to an injury sustained against USC (hip) but will try to play Saturday.
2025 Game Prediction: How Georgia Southern Wins vs. Maine in Week 4
Just like Jacksonville State, the Eagles’ top priority needs to be shutting down the run game. Not only is it Maine’s offensive strength, it is the Eagles defensive weakness. Georgia Southern will also want to get up early in this game. A quick touchdown drive not only will build the offense’s confidence, but it will be necessary if they want to force Peevy to make some plays in the air.
If Georgia Southern is able to score quick and limit the Maine rush attack, it could get ugly for the Black Bears. Camden Brown could quickly deflate their defense with his speed. The Eagles secondary will also be able to take advantage of Peevy if they can force Maine into must-pass situations. But if the Eagles cannot stop Sincere Baines, then there could be another shootout in Paulson, and fans will continue to have no confidence in the defense going into conference play.
My final prediction for this contest is a 42-10 victory for the Eagles. Sincere Baines may cause some problems early in the game, but the Eagle defense should settle in once the offense puts some points on the board. Camden Brown should continue to find the endzone, as he has done in every game of the season so far. The Eagle defense should be able to force at least one turnover as their defense is ranked 18th-best in takeaways per game (1.7), the only flattering defensive statistic for the team.
