Georgia Southern Eagles vs. Marshall Thundering Herd: 2025 College Football Recap
Up From the Jump
Georgia Southern held the Thundering Herd to three points after Marshall starting quarterback Carlos Del Rio-Wilson put his team in field goal range with a 34-yard dot. The 3-0 Marshall lead was the only time the Thundering Herd would have a lead throughout the entire game. Eagles starting quarterback JC French led his team on a nine-play drive, ending with a 33-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Marcus Sanders Jr.
After the Sanders touchdown, the Eagles defense had an impressive stand to force a punt. Following that, the Eagles strung together a 13-play drive drive with six pass plays and seven runs. It ended with a Camden Brown 14-yard touchdown, who’s continued his phenomenal 2025 campaign. Georgia Southern knew they had to get their best player the ball, and that is exactly what they did.
The defense stepped up again in the next Thundering Herd drive. Georgia Southern defensive back Ayden Jackson, the same player who had the game-winning interception against App State, had another timely turnover in this contest. However, the Eagles would not be able to turn it into any points. Yet, it set the standard of the defense in this matchup.
The Thundering Herd got another field goal before the half, but left time for the Eagles. French found Brown on a 29-yard pass to get in scoring position, but the 49-yard attempt fell just short. Still, the Eagles went into the half with the lead, 14-6.
Second Half, Same Story
The Eagles came out in the second half with the same game plan as the first – try and feed Camden Brown. On a 10-play drive, with six passing plays, JC French threw it to Brown four times. The final reception was a 12-yard touchdown for Brown, putting the Eagles up 21-6. It also gave the Georgia Southern receiver the single-season receiving yards record. Brown also became the first Georgia Southern wideout in program history to surpass 1000 yards on the season (1049). He wasn’t done, though.
After another defensive stop, French threw a 31-yard shot to Brown who took it for an additional 12-yards after the catch. The drive eventually stalled, but the effort by Brown was enough to get the Eagles in field goal range. This time, the 24-yard field goal was good, and the Eagles were up 24-6.
The Thundering Herd finally found their first touchdown of the game, after a four-play drive sparked by a 24-yard catch and run by De’Andre Tamarez. Marshall running back Antwan Roberts would punch the ball in on an impressive 17-yard rushing score. Marshall, wisely, went for the two-point conversion. Unfortunately, the attempt failed failed. It was 24-12 heading into the fourth quarter.
Just when the Eagles thought they could run the clock out, Herd defensive lineman Naquan Crowder forced a fumble out of French, and defensive tackle Jamaal Whyce recovered it. With time not on their side, Marshall had to start airing it out. A five-play drive, consisting of all passing plays, ended with a massive 41-yard touchdown catch by wide receiver Adrian Norton.
The Eagles were up 24-19 and knew they had to run the clock down. They brought in backup quarterback Weston Bryan to run the ball, and he moved the chains, effectively ending the game.
Eagles Bowl Berth
This win makes the Eagles bowl eligible for the fourth consecutive year. This is the first time the Eagles have made four-straight bowl appearances in program history. However, something to note is that head coach Clay Helton is just 2-6 in bowl games.
