As modern offenses continue to stretch defenses across the field, Georgia Southern defensive back Chance Gamble brings rare versatility and composure to the secondary. And entering the 2025 college football season, Gamble looks to play a major role for the Eagles.

Georgia Southern: Who is Chance Gamble?

A Georgia native, Gamble stood out early at Fitzgerald High School, where he excelled on both sides of the ball. His senior year saw him rack up 1,675 all-purpose yards and 23 touchdowns on offense. Meanwhile, he also recorded 33 tackles, 12 pass breakups, and a pick-six on defense. His all-around dominance earned him Region Player of the Year, First Team All-State honors, and Class 2A Player of the Year recognition.

A multi-sport athlete, Gamble also earned All-State honors in basketball. He received offers from programs including UCF, but ultimately chose to begin his college career at Kennesaw State.

Record-Breaking Breakout

Gamble arrived at Kennesaw State during its final years as an FCS program. As a freshman, he appeared in five games, making his mark with an interception in the FCS playoffs. Off the field, he finished the academic year with a perfect 4.0 GPA, earning a spot on the President’s List.

His sophomore season was a breakout campaign. Starting all 10 games, Gamble emerged as a key playmaker for the Owls. He had two fumble recoveries against Jacksonville State. He also made headlines with a record-setting performance against No. 15 UT Martin.

In that game he had three interceptions (tying a school record), including an 89-yard pick-six—the longest in Kennesaw history. That performance earned him FedEx Ground Defensive Player of the Week honors. He also notched a career-high eight tackles in that game.

The following year, Kennesaw transitioned to the FBS without conference affiliation. Due to that, the season lacked meaningful competition.

Like many of his teammates, Gamble redshirted after appearing in just four games. Despite limited action, he still managed 13 tackles, two pass breakups, and another perfect 4.0 GPA. With the program in flux and two years of eligibility remaining, Gamble transferred to Georgia Southern in January 2024.

Immediate Impact

Gamble made his presence felt immediately in Statesboro. In his debut against Boise State, he forced a fumble. A week later at Nevada, he delivered seven tackles, a pass breakup, and a key fumble recovery—the first turnover Nevada surrendered all season. He followed that with six tackles against South Carolina State and then seven tackles and an interception against Ole Miss, a playoff-caliber SEC team with a first-round NFL draft pick at quarterback.

The momentum continued with another interception against Georgia State. However, a finger injury in practice sidelined Gamble for three weeks. Upon returning, he remained consistent.

Gamble had four tackles and a pass breakup against South Alabama, seven tackles and another pass breakup versus Troy, and a stat-stuffing performance against Coastal Carolina (four tackles, one interception, one pass breakup). He closed the regular season with four tackles against rival Appalachian State and played in the New Orleans Bowl, adding four more tackles.

Gamble finished the 2024 season with 48 tackles, eight pass breakups, three interceptions, one forced fumble, and one recovery. His efforts earned him Second Team All-Sun Belt honors and a spot on the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Team, a testament to his excellence on and off the field.

Leading With Experience

Chance Gamble enters the 2025 season on the Preseason All-Sun Belt First Defensive Team, alongside two of his teammates; DL Latrell Bullard and LB Brendan Harrington.

With a proven ability to create turnovers and lock down receivers, his presence in the secondary gives the Eagles both stability and a playmaking edge. Coming off an All-Sun Belt Second Team campaign and earning Academic All-District honors, Gamble embodies the blend of athletic excellence and discipline that defines the program’s culture under head coach Clay Helton.

As a redshirt senior, his leadership, experience, and production could be a driving force in Georgia Southern’s pursuit of a Sun Belt title—and his performance this fall may very well earn him national recognition.
