Through two weeks of the 2025 college football season, few names have generated more buzz than Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer. The Texas native has gone from under-the-radar transfer to national spotlight in a matter of games, with fans and analysts already whispering Heisman Trophy possibilities and drawing NFL scouts’ attention.
John Mateer: Football Background
Born in Little Elm, Texas, John Mateer was a prolific high school quarterback, piling up over 7000 passing yards, more than 1200 rushing yards, and 88 total touchdowns. A three-star prospect, he initially committed to Washington State, where he redshirted in 2022 before breaking out in 2024 with 3139 passing yards, 816 rushing yards, and 44 total touchdowns. That season vaulted him into the national conversation as one of the most exciting dual-threat quarterbacks in the country.
Seeking a bigger stage and reuniting with offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle, Mateer transferred to Oklahoma for the 2025 season, making the jump to the SEC level. The move immediately elevated expectations for the Sooners’ offense, and Mateer has wasted no time showing why.

Strengths
John Mateer’s game is built on electricity. He’s a true dual-threat quarterback who can beat defenses with his arm and his legs. Some of the most notable strengths of his game have been seen through two weeks.
Mateer’s arm talent stands out with arm strength capable of pushing the ball downfield while also having the velocity to fit the ball in right windows or outside the numbers on a line. He also has the ability to manipulate his arm angles to create throwing windows under duress or fit balls around defenders.
As a runner, Mateer has great vision, is elusive, and fearless taking on contact. The threat of his legs keeps defenses honest with designed runs and scrambles that extend drives for the Sooner offense.
The term “gunslinger” has been thrown around in conversations, and in a lot of areas, it can be true. Mateer has an aggressive play style that sometimes can bite back. Yet more importantly, Mateer plays with supreme confidence. He thrives in up-tempo situations, makes quick decisions, and has shown early chemistry with his receivers. He has also shown exceptional pocket poise, willing to absorb heavy contact to deliver throws downfield.
Weaknesses
As with most dynamic quarterbacks, consistency is the next step, and he has taken the early step during his time in Norman. His mechanics specifically are an area to watch for improved consistency the rest of the way. Each throw differs in its own unique way. The way he sets his feet, his release, arm angle, follow-through, it can all differ from throw to throw. This is even in a clean pocket, affording him the ability to have an un-pressured process.
Another area that can be more consistent is Mateer’s accuracy. There are times throws can get away from him, leaving yards on the field or resulting in turnovers. That said, a lot of these issues stem from his lack of a mechanical baseline. However, he can also improve throwing with touch.
On deep throws, he can put the ball out too flat, allowing defenders to break up the pass. In these instances, improved touch would provide a steep drop angle when avoiding the outstretched arms of defenders. He can also throw fastballs underneath unnecessarily, resulting in more difficult catches for receivers on routine underneath routes.
Finally, his aggressive running style also opens him up to extra hits. While durability has not proven to be an issue to this point, absorbing this kind of contact through the course of a long season can compound. Learning to protect himself will be another area to watch the rest of the season and into his future in the NFL.
2025 Season
Mateer’s Oklahoma debut against Illinois State could not have gone much better. He went 30-of-37 passing for 392 yards and three touchdowns, adding a rushing score in a 35-3 victory. The performance set a school record for passing yards in a debut and immediately put him on the radar.
The real test came a week later against Michigan, and Mateer again delivered. He threw for 270 yards and a touchdown while rushing for 74 yards and two more scores. Though he tossed an interception, he proved he could move the ball against one of the nation’s top defenses, leading Oklahoma to a statement win over the reigning national champions.
Through three games, Mateer has totaled 994 passing yards, 161 rushing yards, and nine total touchdowns. His QBR sits among the top-30 nationally, and his blend of efficiency and explosiveness has Oklahoma fans buzzing.
Heisman Potential
The Heisman race is often as much about moments as it is about stats, and Mateer has already had one in his prime-time performance against Michigan. His combination of highlight-reel plays, gaudy numbers, and the spotlight of Oklahoma football has vaulted him into early Heisman discussions. If he can maintain consistency and lead the Sooners to SEC contention, there’s a realistic chance he finds himself in New York as a finalist in December.
NFL Draft Stock
Looking beyond 2025, Mateer is starting to draw serious NFL interest. His athleticism and arm talent fit the mold of today’s pro quarterbacks. Early projections were scattered, with some seeing the potential of what could be and some skittish about the inconsistent play. For me, Mateer is currently in the round 2 conversations with more room for movement with the rest of the season unwritten. I will be watching Oklahoma’s offense and their potential path to the College Football Playoffs.
Summary
John Mateer’s journey from Texas high school standout to Washington State star to Oklahoma centerpiece is one of patience, talent, and opportunity. In just two games, he’s shown enough to justify Heisman buzz and spark conversations about his NFL future. His strengths as a dual-threat playmaker make him one of college football’s most exciting quarterbacks, while his weaknesses are areas that can be refined with experience.
If he keeps Oklahoma in the national title hunt and continues to produce at this level, Mateer’s name won’t just be in the Heisman conversation. It’ll be at the top of it, and NFL teams will have no choice but to take notice.
