The turnover amongst the Kansas Jayhawks offense, particularly the skill positions, is apparent if you look at their depth chart. The team is returning just seven total receptions from last season, with the leader of the pack (Doug Emilien) having just three catches in 2024 and 11 in his career. Needless to say, the opportunity for production is wide open entering the 2025 season. The group of receivers that led the team for the past three seasons has moved on, and it’s time for a new group to step up. With that in mind, Emmanuel Henderson is hoping that he can be the leader of the new group of Kansas receivers.
Kansas Jayhawks: Who is Emmanuel Henderson?
Henderson was a highly touted prospect coming out of high school in 2022, albeit as a running back. He was a top-60 player in the country and was the third-ranked player in the state of Alabama. The list of schools that offered him a scholarship included Georgia, Michigan, Notre Dame, Penn State, and over a dozen other power conference and big name schools.
Ultimately, he decided to stay in his home state and committed to Alabama, whose class ended up being the second ranked in the country. Unfortunately for Henderson, he didn’t see much production during his time in Tuscaloosa. In three years, he caught just five passes for 96 yards.
According to a 24/7 article, a big reason Henderson chose to transfer to Kansas was the opportunity he’d have to make an impact on the field.
“They laid out everything, the opportunity I’ll have here, coming here.”
Opportunity Knocks
As previously stated, the amount of production lost in the pass-catching department is vast for the Jayhawks. Each of the past three seasons, the top receivers on the team have been Luke Grimm, Quentin Skinner, and Lawrence Arnold. In 2025, none of them will be on the roster.
Instead, the depth chart will be lined with incoming transfers looking to prove their worth. While the other transfers have better collegiate numbers at smaller schools, Henderson was by far the biggest name coming out of high school. It will be a classic battle of production versus potential.
One of the other receivers in the room is Bryson Canty. Canty had multiple seasons with 700 yards at Columbia, while also collecting 17 touchdowns.
Meanwhile, Cam Pickett collected just shy of 700 all purpose yards and four touchdowns for Ball State in 2024. He comes into Kansas looking to build on that production this season.
Finally, Levi Wentz averaged more than 16 yards per catch during his time at Albany.
These receivers all bring more production to the table than Henderson. However, Henderson brings the highest upside, especially considering he has only been playing the position for a few years now.
What Henderson Brings to the Table
Emmanuel Henderson brings experience and speed to this Kansas football team.
While his production isn’t anything to write home about, Henderson has seen the field quite a bit during his college career. Between being a receiver and a special teams contributor, he has almost 600 snaps to his name at the college level. That experience should be valuable for a position group that will be entirely brand new in 2025.
His speed should also be a valuable asset in many facets of the Jayhawks.
Speaking to the media, Jayhawks head coach Lance Leipold said that Henderson, “is fast. He can cover ground and he can get there in a hurry.”
As a converted running back, his receiving skills are still being developed. However, speed is something that can be utilized no matter what other skills are present in a player. The ways that elite speed can impact a game are plentiful.
And even if more conventional receiving skills aren’t quite there for Henderson, he can still be a potent weapon for the offense or return game.
