KOP 2023 NFL Mock Draft – No Busts

college football bijan robinson nfl mock draft

In his first NFL mock draft for The League Winners, Calvin Kirton gives us a first round filled with surprises.

Bonjour, Mesdames et Messieurs! Yes, it is another NFL Mock Draft. I felt compelled to conduct my mock draft because of Jim Nagy, Executive Director of Reese’s Senior Bowl. He mentioned something interesting but obvious.

Mr. Nagy’s comments inspired me to change the NFL mock draft game. I’m getting away from the cookie-cutter world of mock drafts. More importantly, this mock draft will have zero bust potential prospects. That makes this mock draft different from the others; we’re always looking to draft players that will not bust.

Every player drafted in the 1st round will significantly contribute to their team. Sometimes, we use the word ‘bust’ carelessly, without any way to quantify it. For this exercise – and article – we’ll define a bust as a player who won’t get their fifth-year option picked up by the respective organization.

Lastly, my NFL mock draft is based on what I would do if I were every organization’s, General Manager. No trades. You don’t need to worry about trades if you’re confident in your GM skills – which I am. We should go ahead and get started.

carolina panthers - nfl mock draft
1. Carolina Panthers (from CHI)

Team Needs: QB, WR, OC, CB, Edge, DT

C.J. Stroud, QB, Ohio State

As mentioned in my KOP scouting report of Mr. Stroud, he’s a much better prospect than Trevor Lawrence.

2. Houston Texans

Team Needs: QB, WR, OC, Edge, DT, SS, LB

Bryce Young, QB, Alabama

Many would say Bryce Young has some bust potential due to his small size. However, I don’t see it. My perspective on Mr. Young’s size is that it is a self-fulfilling prophecy. We never blame the size of ‘prototypical-sized’ quarterbacks when they get injured. You don’t hear the word injury prone when you hear of Josh Allen, who has a history of UCL injuries. That’s one example, but I can do this all day.

However, I digress. Bryce Young is another 2023 NFL QB prospect that’s a better prospect than Trevor Lawrence. When comparing both men as college prospects, Young tops Lawrence in pre-snap, post-snap, pocket manipulation, throwing with anticipation, accuracy, lateral quickness, decision-making, and handling pressure.

Specifically, Bryce Young can provide a calming presence under duress. He can create when things break down, evidenced by his 95.7 QBR outside the pocket last season (third in the FBS), credited by ESPN.

arizona cardinals - nfl mock draft

3. Arizona Cardinals

Team Needs: RB, OC, 2 CB, 2 Edge, 2 DTs

Jalen Carter, DT, Georgia

Most know about Jalen Carter’s transgressions during the offseason, which may be a cause for concern for most draft experts. I believe he’s going through a human experience before our eyes. Mr. Carter and the entire Georgia Football program is dealing with a tragedy. We are seeing him deal with it in real time. It will take time for him to process everything, but when he does, Arizona Cardinals will get a generational DT.

Carter reigns supreme across all stable metrics posting top-five marks across the board and never finishing lower than fourth in any category. – Jonathon Macri, PFF

4. Indianapolis Colts

Team Needs: QB, 2 WR, TE, OG, 2 Edge, DT, SS, FS, LB, 2 CBs

Anthony Richardson, QB, Florida

Regarding my ‘zero busts’ sentiment at the beginning of the NFL mock draft, you’re probably wondering why Anthony Richardson is in this article, and taken this high. The discussion of the elite QB traits need to be corrected. You’ll hear words like high ceiling and low floor for players like Mr. Richardson. However, the reality is that elite attributes (Size, Arm, Speed, Quickness, Strength) provide a high floor.

Players with a similar style of play as Josh Rosen have low floors. You can look at Tim Tebow and Blake Bortles as prime examples for high floor candidates. Both Mr. Tebow and Mr. Bortles had functional athleticism and good size. Tebow couldn’t throw a football properly but could win a playoff game. Bortles had a horrible throwing motion and issues with accuracy, but he was one bad call away from beating Tom Brady in the AFC Championship game.

As I said, both men had functional athleticism and good size. Both are far from the Anthony Richardson spectrum for arm strength, overall athleticism, and size. At 6-foot-4 and 244 pounds, Richardson ran a 4.43 in the 40-yard dash at the combine and had the strongest arm in this class. If Mr. Richardson doesn’t improve his game, he still won’t bust.

Anthony Richardson being drafted by the Colts is a home run draft pick because of new Colts head coach Shane Steichen. In my opinion, he is Brian Daboll without the media attention. Under the tutelage of Mr. Steichen, Jalen Hurts improved his accuracy in 2021 from 52.0%, to 62.3%. In 2022, Mr. Hurts’ completion percentage was 66.5%, his second year playing with Mr. Steichen.

seattle seahawks nfl mock draft

5. Seattle Seahawks (from DEN)

Team Needs: WR, OC, Edge, 2 DTs, CB

Tyree Wilson, DE, Texas Tech

Will Anderson might be the best edge defender – which I disagree with – but Tyree Wilson is the safest edge defender in this draft.

You can trust Mr. Wilson to collapse the pocket while consistently maintaining containment. His NFL value won’t show in the box score; but he will make the game easier for his teammates and more difficult for the opposing QB. Wilson’s rare length, burst, and power allow him to win with the Bull-Rush on practically every pass-rush rep.

detroit lions nfl mock draft

6. Detroit Lions (from LAR)

Team Needs: RB, WR, TE, OC, Edge, DT, CB, LB

Devon Witherspoon, CB, Illinois

What makes Devon Witherspoon a ‘zero bust’ prospect is his aggressive nature. He plays cornerback as if the opposing receivers have disrespected his family. Mr. Witherspoon is a versatile CB; he can play zone, man, boundary or the Nickel. He separates himself from his peers in man coverage. According to PFF, Witherspoon’s grade in man coverage was ranked first in the nation. He allowed 28.3% of passes to be completed and a 21.5 NFL passer rating when targeted.

Last season, the Detroit Lions had the third-highest rate of playing man coverage. The team also just traded away Jeff Okudah to the Atlanta Falcons, allowing Witherspoon to come in and immediately start.

las vegas raiders nfl mock draft

7. Las Vegas Raiders

Team Needs: QB, WR, OC, 2 OGs, Edge, 2 DTs, 2 CBs, SS, FS, 2 LBs

Calijah Kancey, DT, Pittsburgh

Calijah Kancey RAS - nfl mock draft

Calijah Kancey’s size makes him a bust candidate in the eyes of people that believe in size measurement thresholds. Mr. Kancey is in the 17th percentile regarding height and weight at the DT position. What he lacked in size, he made up for it with explosive power.

Kancey ran the fastest 40-yard dash time for a defensive tackle since 2006 at 4.67 seconds. He had 14.5 sacks and 28.5 tackles for loss over the past two seasons at Pitt. Furthermore, he ranked fourth among draft-eligible Interior defensive linemen in PFF’s “Key Stable Metrics” ranking.

8. Atlanta Falcons

Team Needs: QB, RB, 2 WRs, OC, OG, Edge, 2 DTs, 2 CBs, SS

Bijan Robinson, RB, Texas

The “don’t draft an RB in the first round” philosophy is exhausting. The arguments as to why you shouldn’t draft an RB in the 1st round can apply to quarterbacks, but we still overvalue the QB position. Mr. Irrelevant – Brock Purdy – is getting ready to start over not one, but two QBs who were drafted third overall. I can go on for days with examples of quarterbacks outside the 1st round providing significant positive contributions to their organization. Saquon Barkley was more valuable to the Giants’ offense than Daniel Jones when both played under their rookie contracts.

I’m trying to say that drafting Bijan Robinson eighth overall shouldn’t be controversial. He’s arguably the best overall prospect in 2023. That’s why he’s gone at No. 8 in this NFL mock draft.

Falcons head coach Arthur Smith will fall in love with Mr. Robinson, since he has an affinity for the run game. Smith is one of the leaders in calling run plays and is arguably the best play-caller in that department, too.

9. Chicago Bears (from CAR)

Team Needs: OC, OT, 2 Edge, DT, 2 CBs

John Michael Schmitz, OC, Minnesota

One of the biggest misconceptions of offensive line value is the discussion of the tackle and center positions. Personally, I place more importance on centers. Centers have more pre-snap responsibility; they’re required to lead the OL. Additionally, quarterbacks prefer to deal with edge pressure than interior pressure, especially if they’re a QB with functional mobility.

Everyone knows Justin Fields needs better protection, but the assumption is to improve the tackle position. The real issue is the Bears signing Lucas Patrick to play center. Mr. Patrick and OC Sam Mustipher were the issues, not the tackle positions. 2022 5th-round pick, LT Braxton Jones, seems to be their LT for the future.

In four years starting in the Big-10, John Michael Schmitz allowed just two sacks and 21 total pressures. Also, he had a 92.8 career PFF grade, which puts him in the same conversation as Tyler Linderbaum.

philadelphia eagles nfl mock draft

10. Philadelphia Eagles (from NO)

Team Needs: RB, WR, OG, 2 LBs, SS, FS, DT

Jack Campbell, LB, Iowa

It seems like linebackers are being treated as running backs of the defense. Their draft capital value is consistently dwindling each year. I’m more worried about the person/player than the position. Will a person become a great player? The answer is yes for Jack Campbell.

As an NFL prospect, Campbell checks all the boxes to become a dominant LB; analytics, statistics, athleticism, and film. You can’t miss.

The Eagles’ LB in the Super Bowl was TJ Edwards, and he was exposed by the Chiefs’ offense both in the run and passing game. Mr. Campbell will be a breath of fresh air.

11. Tennessee Titans

Team Needs: QB, WR, OC, Edge, DT, SS, LB

Jaxon Smith-Njigba, WR, Ohio State

The Titans quickly discovered that Treylon Burks is no A.J. Brown, and ex-GM Jon Robinson paid the ultimate price.

Drafting Jaxon Smith-Njigba will make up for Burks pick. Mr. Smith-Njigba mainly played the slot for Ohio State, but he’s more than a slot WR due to his elite agility and intelligence. He can play all over the field; X, Z, and slot. According to PFF, he tops the charts regarding the key stable metrics consensus ranking.

12. Houston Texans (from CLE)

Team Needs: QB, WR, OC, Edge, DT, SS, LB

Luke Wypler, OC, Ohio State

As I mentioned with the Bears, I believe center is more valuable to a quarterback – especially with mobile ones. QBs with mobility easily handle pressure from the edge compared to interior pressure.

In two seasons, Luke Wypler allowed only eight pressures as Ohio State’s starting center, earning run-blocking grades above 80.0.

new york jets mock draft

13. New York Jets

Team Needs: QB, TE, OC, 2 OTs, OG, SS, FS, DT

Paris Johnson Jr., OT, Ohio State

Paris Johnson has experience both inside and outside, and his 6’6″ and 313-pound frame will quickly move defensive linemen. This draft pick turns into two great choice, because Mekhi Becton can move to RT, a more natural position for his skillset and size. Mr. Becton will have more help from TEs in the passing game and be the catalyst in the outside zone run-blocking game.

According to PFF, Paris Johnson moved to LT for the Buckeyes, and his 83.1 grade ranked fourth among Power Five tackles this past season.

14. New England Patriots

Team Needs: QB, RB, WR, OT, LB, DT

Darnell Wright, OT, Tennessee

Darnell Wright is a big reason why Will Anderson wasn’t drafted in the first round of my NFL mock draft; I’ll explain later.

Everyone knew of the Patriots’ offensive woes last season, but the struggle is trying to isolate the main issue. Most would like to see Zay Flowers drafted at 14 because the belief is the lack of weapons was the issue. If you think about it, their weapons are similar to the Chiefs.

The other issue has been addressed; offensive play caller. Bill O’Brien was hired to replace Matt Patricia as Offensive Coordinator.

If they keep Mac Jones at QB, we must address the protection. Mac isn’t a dynamic runner and needs more mobility. Jones had a league-low 4.1 QBR when pressured. Darnell Wright is the man for the job.

Darnell Wright allowed just one sack last season due to his tremendous feet and 6’5″ and 333-pound frame. More importantly, Mr. Wright dominated his matchup between him and Will Anderson. He only lost two reps to Mr. Anderson.

15. Green Bay Packers

Team Needs: 2 WRs, TE, OC, OG, Edge, DT, SS, FS

Dalton Kincaid, TE, Utah

Dalton Kincaid addresses two positions at the same time. He has the versatility to become your big slot WR or move TE at this juncture of his career. However, his tape shows his willingness to be a good and aggressive blocker. Mr. Kincaid can be a great in-line TE in two years.

He caught 70 balls for 890 yards and eight TDs last season. Kincaid separates from coverage with so much ease, bringing down 50-50 balls as if nobody was guarding him. His best trait is yards after the catch.

16. Washington Commanders

Team Needs: QB, RB, TE, OC, 2 OGs, CB, FS, 2 LBs

Michael Mayer, TE, Notre Dame

Like Kincaid above, drafting Michael Mayer fixes or improves two aspects of the offensive game. Mr. Mayer will improve your running game and destroy defenses in zone coverage. Opposing teams will be forced to play zone coverage with impunity due to Jahan Dotson and Terry McLaurin running routes. This is where Mayer punishes teams. Now, teams are damned either way.

Mr. Mayer posted back-to-back seasons with at least 800 receiving yards and seven touchdowns. He can run over would-be tacklers or go around them with a hint of lateral agility.

pittsburgh steelers nfl mock draft

17. Pittsburgh Steelers

Team Needs: 2 OTs, 2 CBs, SS, 2 LBs, DT, Edge

Peter Skoronski, OT, Northwestern

Most experts believe Peter Skoronski should be a guard. I’m curious if he should be a guard or tackle; all I know is Mr. Skoronski is a ten-plus-year starter. He will succeed no matter what. He’s done great against players like Chase Young and Zach Harrison.

The Steelers have needs all over the OL. Skoronski will bring some happiness to Kenny Pickett.

Mr. Skoronski’s pass-blocking efficiency rating was 99.2, ranked 2nd in the nation.

lions nfl mock draft

18. Detroit Lions

Team Needs: RB, WR, TE, OC, Edge, DT, CB, LB

Keanu Benton, DT, Wisconsin

Keanu Benton would solidify the Lions’ DL. Alim McNeill, Lions DT, needs another partner to take the attention away from him. Benton has the versatility to play every down on the DL. Additionally, he has a variety of ways to win at the line of scrimmage. He was able to showcase all of his tools at the Senior Bowl.

19. Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Team Needs: QB, RB, WR, TE, 2 OGs, OT, DT, Edge

Dawand Jones, OT, Ohio State

The Bucs will be doing a fantastic job tanking this season for Caleb Williams, but making it seem like they are trying to win this year. Signing Baker Mayfield, the former first-overall pick, gives the perception that they are trying to win. However, it’s common knowledge within the NFL that Baker Mayfield needs an elite OL to be consistently good. Right now, the Bucs have only one legit OL, Tristan Wirfs. Mayfield is going to get beat up.

In this NFL mock draft world, we don’t tank. We don’t breed losers. We will protect Mr. Mayfield and do our best to mimic what he had in Cleveland when he was one possession away from beating the Chiefs in the AFC playoff divisional round. Dawand Jones becoming the RT for the Bucs is a good start.

Mr. Jones’ 6’8″ 378-pound frame will provide more enormous rushing lanes for Rachaad White. Considering Mr. Jones’ size, it is surprising he led the nation in Pass-Block Efficiency.

20. Seattle Seahawks

Team Needs: WR, OC, Edge, 2 DTs, CB

Mazi Smith, DT, Michigan

Between Tyree Wilson and Mazi Smith, opposing offenses won’t have a good enough pocket to throw from. Smith is another person that won’t fill the stat sheet, but will make the game easier for his play caller and teammates. His bull rush is a thing of beauty, and will constantly push the OL into the lap of the QB.

Mr. Smith’s 2022 season perfectly shows he won’t fill the stat sheet. He had one sack, five hits, and 19 hurries. At his position, he ranked 217th, 27th, and 37th, respectively. However, he ranked third in the nation with 22 Other Pass-Rush Wins.

21. Los Angeles Chargers

Team Needs: WR, OT, FS, LB, 2 DTs

Zay Flowers, WR, Boston College

Don’t let the size fool you. Zay Flowers has the skill to play every WR position. Even though Flowers is 5’9″ and 182 pounds, he still had a 58.3% success rate in contested catch situations.

It was important to address the offensive weapons for the Chargers, because they hired Kellen Moore as their new offensive coordinator. Comparing Moore to his peers, he has a more complicated offense. Additionally, his offense is a player over tactics approach – mostly. I know it is an odd combination. He puts most of the stress on the QB and the pass-catcher instead of simplifying it, scheming players open.

Mr. Flowers has the live-action mental capacity to accept the challenge.

If we had a better OC, the pick would be toward the interior DL. For several years, the Chargers have been one of the worst defenses in stopping the run and providing interior pressure.

22. Baltimore Ravens

Team Needs: RB, WR, DT, CB, 2 Edge

Joey Porter Jr., CB, Penn State

Yes, the Ravens need an effective boundary WR. They don’t need to draft a boundary WR in the first round; they need Rashod Bateman to be healthy because he’s the truth every time he steps into the booth.

With all the Ravens’ self-inflicted distractions, we forget they lost Calais Campbell, Marcus Peters, and Justin Houston. We have to replenish the defense as soon as possible. Joey Porter is the start we needed.

Porter is a fantastic press corner with instincts, body control, and aggressive nature. It helped lead him to having 11 pass breakups last season. According to ESPN, he also limited opponents to 3.7 yards per pass attempt thrown in his direction, good for fifth in the country. Lastly, his 79.2 PFF grade in man coverage ranked seventh in the nation among all draft-eligible CBs.

23. Minnesota Vikings

Team Needs: 2 WRs, OG, 2 CBs, LB, DT

Josh Downs, WR, North Carolina

Josh Downs is another person with the size that suggests he’s only a slot WR. Like Zay Flowers, Downs can play every WR position exceptionally efficiently. His contested catch rate was 72.9% last season, ranking eighth among 2023 NFL WR draft prospects. Furthermore, his 92.1 PFF grade against man coverage was first in the NCAA.

The inability of the Vikings to find a serviceable third WR and the departure of Adam Thielen place us in a situation to draft one of the best WRs in this draft class.

24. Jacksonville Jaguars

Team Needs: OC, 2 OGs, 2 OTs, CB, SS, DT, Edge

O’Cyrus Torrence, OG, Florida

Jaguars head coach Doug Pederson has done a fantastic job hiding the glaring weakness; OL. The Jaguars’ highest-ranking OL is their center, Luke Fortner. He ranked 34th of 36 eligible Centers.

Mr. Pederson’s unique coaching skill is providing a clear vision to open his primary read within 2.5 seconds. Even though we have a great coach, we still need to prepare for coaches catching up on how he uses his talent and Trevor Lawrence. O’Cyrus Torrence will provide more time in the pocket for Trevor Lawrence.

new york giants nfl mock draft

25. New York Giants

Team Needs: QB, 2 WRs, OC, 2 OGs, SS, FS, LB, Edge

Chandler Zavala, OG, North Carolina State

Giants head coach Brian Daboll is another coach with great ways to make the game easier for his personnel. However, as most know, it generally takes opposing coaches a year to catch up. Daboll won’t have the shock and awe element this season. He won’t be able to get away with a subpar OL. We have three OL positions to address. Chandler Zavala will instantly repair one of those positions.

Among draft-eligible Guards, Mr. Zavala ranked third in PFF’s Pass Blocking Efficiency in True Pass Sets.

chandler zavala RAS - nfl mock draft

dallas cowboys nfl mock draft

26. Dallas Cowboys

Team Needs: WR, TE, IOL, LB, 2 DTs

Kobie Turner, DT, Wake Forest

In the NFC Divisional Round, it seemed like the Dallas Cowboys were on the verge of upsetting the 49ers in the first half. The second half was a different story. Once Kyle Shanahan decided to scratch the zone-blocking run game and implement more of a downhill run game, it was over, convincingly.

Kobie Turner might be undersized at 6’2″, and 288 pounds, but he can and will effectively slow down the run game. Among interior DL prospects, he had the best PFF run defense grade. The analytical data has Mr. Turner as a well-rounded interior DL. He ranked third in PFF’s key stable metrics consensus ranking.

buffalo bills nfl mock draft

27. Buffalo Bills

Team Needs: RB, WR, OC, 2 OGs, OT, CB, LB, DT

Nathaniel Dell, WR, Houston

No more of us relying on inconsistent players like Gabriel Davis. Nathaniel Dell will beat man coverage every single time. He ranked third in beating man coverage with an 89.6 PFF grade, only 2.5 grading points away from number one, Josh Downs.

28. Cincinnati Bengals

Team Needs: TE, OG, OT, SS, FS, DT, CB

Brian Branch, SS, Alabama

The Bengals offense is mainly solidified. We must address the defense, primarily the secondary. The Bengals lost critical players like Eli Apple and Jessie Bates this offseason. Brian Branch is a great start to repairing the defense.

A leader within the secondary room. He has the versatility to play NCB, SS, and FS. He didn’t test well at the combine, but playing the safety positions is more about instincts, and he has it in spades.

29. New Orleans Saints (from SF/MIA/DEN)

Team Needs: TE, OC, 2 OGs, OT, CB, DT, Edge

Joe Tippmann, OC, Wisconsin

With the Saints in salary cap peril, they have several needs; I needed help figuring out what position to address first in this NFL mock draft. Additionally, the Saints have one of the worst coaching staff in the league. So, if someone is going to bust, the person will likely come from the Saints.

You can always go right with drafting the anchor of the OL with supreme production. Joe Tippmann allowed only one sack, four hits, and four hurries for his entire college career, encompassing playing 1,456 snaps.

30. Philadelphia Eagles

Team Needs: RB, WR, OG, 2 LBs, SS, FS, DT

Jordan Addison, WR, USC

Jordan Addison is the ultimate WR that coaches love; trust. His game has little dynamic, but he’s solid in every aspect except for contested catches. Going to the Eagles, he won’t have to worry about dealing with contested catches. Devonta Smith and A.J. Brown will be responsible for that aspect of the WR game. Addison will face the third-best CB in every game.

The Eagles no longer have to worry about players like Quez Watkins misjudging deep passes and having wrong-hand placement in the Super Bowl.

31. Kansas City Chiefs

Team Needs: RB, WR, 2 OTs, SS, DT, 2 Edge

Jahmyr Gibbs, RB, Alabama

Jahmyr Gibbs is the person the Chiefs wanted in Clyde Edwards-Helaire. The Chiefs finally get their explosive, dynamic RB in the passing game. Gibbs’ acceleration is off the charts. He will provide a great one-two punch with Isiah Pacheco.

Who’s missing? Why?

I’ll break down a few players left off the KOP first-round NFL mock draft in case you’ve wondered why.

Will Anderson
  • Undersized player that relies on power to win pass rush reps.
  • Only won 2 reps vs. Darnell Wright.
  • In 2022, other than facing Mr. Wright, Mr. Anderson faced OTs that most likely won’t become starters in the NFL
  • His pressure generation causes more of an issue for overall defense by losing containment and allowing the QB to scramble.
Will Levis

I wrote an extensive breakdown of why Will Levis isn’t the upside prospect most people think he is.

Quentin Johnston

Overall good prospect with some abilities you can trust. However, he has some bust potential.

  • Best when running movement routes (shallow crossers, verticals, posts, overs). Coaches can’t trust Johnston to run routes where he must sink his hips.
  • Doesn’t High Point the Ball — Size and length are good, but it doesn’t matter if the WR doesn’t use it. Johnston’s inability to track down the ball well keeps him from High Pointing passes.
  • Drops — 11.8% drop rate
  • Contested Catches — Big WRs face many more opportunities to make contested catches. You can’t trust Johnston to win 50/50 balls. Only 8 Contested catches (T-117th)
Christian Gonzalez
  • More zone coverage CB which is a more replaceable skill
  • Struggle in man coverage: ranked 59th and allowed 68.2% of passes to be completed while in man coverage
  • A coaching staff may misdiagnose his strengths and weaknesses as the Lions did with Jeffrey Okundah.

Conclusion

Instead of predicting what General Managers will do, we must challenge ourselves to create a first-round NFL mock draft with zero bust players. The new mock draft challenge is to draft better than 32 GMs, no big deal. Furthermore, it is primarily a lost cause trying to predict general managers’ moves because there’s more competitive misinformation during the NFL offseason. It is hard to know what is true and what is fake news.

I know the NFL draft is saturated with mock draft content. Hopefully, the KOP did an excellent job providing a different twist to your normal NFL mock draft. It is a great exercise for the KOP because our goal is to “live in the future.” At the very least, I hope we were interesting and insightful.
