This game is a big NCAAF rivalry year in and year out – but this seems to be a big mismatch. Both teams had big wins last week. Even though Auburn has only one loss, they have been far from impressive so far.
Georgia is a top team in NCAAF. Their defense is dominant and it does not seem to matter who is quarterbacking the team. They rely on a three-player running back rotation in Kendall Milton, James Cook Jr, and Zamir White. Georgia has dealt with injuries on offense but they have relied on TE Brock Bowers to help to lead the passing game when called upon.
Auburn has only lost one game but has had close calls against Georgia State and LSU. Their offense is top-20, averaging over 460 yards per game. The offense is fairly balanced but the main problem is the consistency of QB Bo Nix. He can make great plays, then makes decisions that cost the team. The key to Auburn staying in this one is Nix making correct decisions and them being able to consistently move the ball.
Auburn +15.5
For the 117th time, Oklahoma and Texas will meet in the “Red River Shootout”. Texas leads the all-time series, 62-49, with five ties.
Texas is led by Sophomore running back, Bijan Robinson. Robinson entered the season as the top Devy running back and has done nothing to disappoint. On the year, Robinson has recorded a total of 819 yards and nine touchdowns. In addition to Robinson, Texas has a nice balance of skill position players. Junior RB Roschon Johnson has 273 total yards with three total touchdowns. Meanwhile, Redshirt Sophomore Jordan Whittington leads the team in receiving with 21 catches for 324 yards and three touchdowns.
For Oklahoma, Redshirt Sophomore quarterback Spencer Rattler leads the way. On the year, Rattler has completed 122 of 160 pass attempts for 1260 yards and 10 touchdowns. At RB, Junior transfer Eric Gray and Redshirt Junior Kennedy Brooks have split the carries basically down the middle. Brooks has 54 carries for 318 yards and four touchdowns, while Gray has 49 rushes for 245 yards and zero touchdowns.
In the receiving department, Sophomore WR Marvin Mims spearheads a very balanced group of wideouts. Three other receivers on the team have registered at least 166 receiving yards and two touchdowns. This is an electric group that continues to produce.
Texas +3.5
It’s a battle of two top-five undefeated Big Ten teams in Iowa City this Saturday afternoon as Penn St (5-0) squares off with Iowa (5-0). Significant college football playoff implications are on the line in this grudge match.
For Penn State, their offense is led by Senior quarterback Sean Clifford. Clifford has been excellent in 2021, completing 67.3 percent of his passes for 1336 yards and 11 touchdowns, to only three interceptions. Clifford’s two main targets are Jahan Dotson and Parker Washington. Dotson has been fantastic through five games hauling in 35 receptions for 446 yards and six touchdowns. Sophomore wideout Parker Washington is the Nittany Lion’s second-leading receiver with 25 receptions for 331 yards and two touchdowns.
Penn State has a three-headed committee approach at running back with Noah Cain, Keyvone Lee, and John Lovett. They have struggled on the ground this year. To win at Iowa, Penn State will need much more from their running back room.
Iowa signal-caller Spencer Petras has done what has been asked of him in 2021. He’s completing 62 percent of his passes with 10 total touchdowns and only one interception. Petras’s favorite weapon is tight end Sam Laporta, who leads the team in receiving with 22 receptions. Running back Tyler Goodson is one of Hawkeye’s most talented offensive weapons. He’s totaled 576 yards and six touchdowns in five games.
This game will be a battle of wills dictated by the defenses. Vegas has set the over-under at just 41 points, so scoring chances may be at a premium. Whoever cannot turn the ball over and take advantage of big plays on offense will have the edge. It’s going to be a brawl in Iowa this Saturday afternoon.
