One of the key matchups in the first round of the College Football Playoff is James Madison vs. Oregon, and this preview will dive into the biggest keys entering this contest. JMU, the winners of the 2025 Sun Belt Conference Championship, have shown the ability to have high-level performances on both sides of the ball. Oregon, despite what people have called a “light” schedule, has arguably one of the most talented rosters in all of the sport. They also have one of the best coaches in the game in Dan Lanning.
Oregon vs. James Madison: College Football Playoff Preview
Many people may expect a blowout, pointing to the talent gap between the two teams. And to be fair, there is a high likelihood of that occurring. However, there is potential for this to be a fun game from both sides, especially if JMU gets rolling early.
The League Winners will be on-site to provide live coverage of all things JMU vs. Oregon. And in the spirit of high-quality game coverage, it is time to dive into the game preview! There is a lot to cover, so without further ado, let’s get it started!
Game History
Over the course of college football history, the Dukes and Ducks have yet to meet on the gridiron. It is a meeting of two teams who, in their own ways, have had plenty of success in their histories. Whether in the Pac-12 or the Big 10, Oregon has consistently won games on the biggest of stages and against the most difficult opponents. James Madison, whether at the FCS or FBS level, have been a force as a football program, consistently winning games in convincing fashion.
Key Players for JMU
In an extremely difficult matchup against Oregon, it will be all hands on deck for James Madison. As a result, there are multiple key players in this game for the Dukes.
Offensively, quarterback Alonza Barnett III and running back Wayne Knight will likely be called upon to carry the brunt of the load for the team.
Barnett, once getting fully healthy, has been one of the better dual-threat players in the country this season. As a passer, Barnett has 2538 passing yards and 21 touchdowns, compared to eight interceptions. He has 17 big-time throws compared to nine turnover-worthy plays, in addition to his 9.6 ADOT. As a runner, the quarterback has 648 yards, 14 touchdowns, and 23 missed tackles forced.
Knight, in his own way, has also been a dynamic dual-threat for the Dukes. On the ground, the running back has been electric. Posting 1289 yards and nine touchdowns, Knight also has 713 yards after contact, 29 runs of 10 yards or more, and 43 missed tackles forced. As a pass catcher, Knight has 373 yards and a touchdown.
To succeed against the Ducks, both Barnett and Knight have to be at their best. They not only have to execute at a high level, but also make the big-time plays. Both players have the potential to thrive in this game, and depending on how they fare, JMU’s offense could find some room to work on Saturday.
Defensively, EDGE Sahir West and safety Jacob Thomas are vital for JMU against the Ducks.
West, a freshman standout for the Dukes, already has 35 pressures and nine sacks as a pass rusher while providing 26 defensive stops as a run defender. Thomas has been a force on the backend for James Madison in every way possible. In 13 games, the defensive back has been credited with 36 tackles, 21 defensive stops, nine pressures, two sacks, two interceptions, and five pass breakups.
Against the Ducks, Thomas and West need to do what they do best: play defense at a high level. The standout edge rusher needs to get after quarterback Dante Moore, while Thomas needs to handle any of the uber-talented wideouts or running backs that he lines up against. If they do that, it will provide a solid baseline for James Madison on Saturday.
Key Players for Oregon
For the Ducks, do not be fooled by the national talking heads. This is a game that they will still need to be at their very best for. As a result, there are key players on both sides of the ball for Oregon.
On offense, quarterback Dante Moore and tight end Kenyon Sadiq are key players.
Moore, one of the best quarterbacks in the entire country, has thrown for 2,731 yards and 24 touchdowns on 8.7 yards per attempt. He also has 26 big-time throws, tied for fifth in the country this season, along with 279 rushing yards. Sadiq, considered one of the best tight ends in the country, has 490 yards and eight touchdowns on 40 receptions. On top of being a great weapon down the field, the potential first-round pick has been a very good blocker for the Ducks.
To beat James Madison, Moore and Sadiq need to be the same players they have been all year. The quarterback needs to attack defenses with the same precision and accuracy that he usually does. The tight end needs to win vertically against JMU’s linebackers and provide necessary value as a blocker.
If the two Oregon standouts do what they are supposed to do, I think the Ducks will be in a great position to win on Saturday.
On defense, Oregon has plenty of key players. But for this game against JMU, defensive lineman A’Mauri Washington and safety Dillon Thieneman are key.
Washington, a key member of a stout Oregon defensive line, has been a force against the run this season. Posting an 81.5 PFF run defense grade, Washington has 23 tackles and 20 defensive stops. He has also provided 17 pressures and two sacks this year. Thieneman, a Purdue transfer, has found his best form with the Ducks. Not only does the safety have 51 tackles and 17 defensive stops, but also has two interceptions and three pass breakups. Thieneman has also allowed only 13 total receptions this year on 22 targets.
Like James Madison, the trenches and the secondary playing at a high level will be critical for Oregon in this game. If they get their usual production, Oregon will be ready to battle against the Dukes.
Keys to Victory: JMU
Play Your Game on Offense
At its best, JMU’s offense is lethal against all opponents. The rushing attack is dynamic, the passing game can hit huge gains, and defenses are left guessing. Even against a very talented team like Oregon, the Dukes cannot get ahead of themselves. With great game planning and execution, James Madison can make things interesting in Eugene.
Don’t Do Too Much on Defense
Yes, Oregon is uber-talented on defense. However, that does not mean it is time to overthink. James Madison needs to play its game on defense, execute at a high level, and adjust when necessary. This game is already going to be an intense and difficult one; there is no need to make things more difficult.
Let Oregon Make the Mistakes
James Madison has to play almost mistake-free football on Saturday. They cannot be sloppy, take poor penalties, or have a lack of communication. Rather, the Dukes need to let the Ducks make the mistakes. If they take care of their own business, JMU will be in its best possible position to win.
Keys to Victory: Oregon
Drag the Dukes into Deep Water
Oregon needs to, for lack of a better term, drag the Dukes into deep water. They need to force James Madison to play from behind and never have a chance to exert their will on the game. To achieve that, Oregon needs to do what it has done all year: play at a high level from every aspect on offense, defense, and special teams
Execute at a High Clip
The Ducks cannot overlook the Dukes and get sloppy in their play on Saturday. They have to execute the playcalls at a high level, avoid miscommunications, and not get in their own heads. Oregon has all the talent to win on Saturday, to put it lightly. They just need to not lose sight of the execution that got them to this point in the season.
Clean. Football
Do not make things easier on James Madison. Oregon needs to avoid penalties and mental mistakes at all costs. That is the juice that massive upsets are made of, and if Oregon cannot avoid them, James Madison could steal this game.
