Pitt routs Boston College, Heintschel Impresses in 48-7 Debut Win

Pitt Football, Pitt Panthers, the league winners

The Pitt Panthers welcomed Boston College to Acrisure Stadium for their second ACC game of the season in Week 6. From the jump it was all Panthers, all day. Freshman quarterback Mason Heintschel played a near-perfect game in his collegiate debut, and Kenny Johnson set career-highs in receptions and yards. Pitt put up their second highest point total of the season, and the only game where they scored more was against FCS Duquesne in Week 1. On top of all that, the defense played its best game of the season. As expected, Kyle Louis and Rasheem Biles were standout performers again. Boston College was held to a minuscule 216 total yards, and only 1.1 yards per rush. Let’s dive into this Pitt vs. Boston College 2025 recap.

Pitt vs. Boston College 2025 Recap

The game began with a Boston College three-and-out, the first of many for the Eagles. After a punt Mason Heintschel led a crisp 11-play 76-yard drive that ended in a 14-yard touchdown to tight end Justin Holmes. BC then turned the ball over on downs in their next possession, and Pitt answered with a 31-yard FG from another true freshman, Trey Butkowski. Pitt led 10-0 at the end of the first quarter, then the defense put the game away before half time.

Louis Shines on Defense for Pitt

Boston College had four drives in the second quarter. They resulted in a fumble, followed by three consecutive three-and-outs. On their first possession of the quarter, it looked like the Eagles were ready to make it a one-score game, but Kyle Louis had other plans.

On a 32-yard completion to Jeremiah Franklin, Louis stripped him, and recovered the fumble. It was a game-changing play that really sucked the life out of Boston College’s sideline. Pitt did not take immediate advantage of the turnover, however they scored a touchdown after each of the BC’s three-and-outs. One from each of Kenny Johnson, Juelz Goff, and third-string running back Ja’Kyrian Turner. At the half it was 31-0, and Pitt was finally able to breathe after back to back gut-wrenching losses to WVU and Louisville.

Unlikely Faces Have Big Impact

Going into the season the Pitt offense was led by quarterback Eli Holstein and running back Desmond Reid. Neither of them started today. Reid was still out with the lower body injury, and Pat Narduzzi took a chance with starting true freshman Mason Heintschel at quarterback. Safe to say the Panthers were just fine on Saturday.

Heintschel was an amazing 30-of-41 for 323 yards and four passing touchdowns, while also adding 28 yards rushing. In Reid’s absence Juelz Goff and Ja’Kyrian Turner combined for 29 rushes for 126 yards and two touchdowns. It was the best rushing day for the Panthers this year, and also their best time of possession mark since Week 1. Pitt running the ball effectively was the key to their defense performing the way they did. In the post game presser Kyle Louis said, “I think the offense staying on the field longer was a game changer, especially for our stamina.”

Pitt had problems against West Virginia with players being fatigued late in the game.

Pitt Finishes Strong in Second Half

The Panthers scored two more times in the third quarter to make it 45-0. Both were passes from Heintschel to Duece Spann, and Zion Fowler-El. Heintschel was replaced by Holstein for the final drive of the game, obviously he will still be the starter next week, it was just 48-7 and the game was out of reach.

Pitt dominated every team stat imaginable. They had 31 first downs to BC’s 11, and out gained the Eagles by almost 300 yards. With Florida State on the horizon next week, the Panthers have a chance to put themselves back into ACC contention, as the conference has been a blood bath outside of Miami who looks like a national championship contender.

Press Conference Notes

Pat Narduzzi immediately addressed the change at quarterback. “It was not my intention to mislead you guys about the QB situation. I just made the decision I felt was best for our team.” Holstein was still listed as the starter throughout the week, rumors of a change did not surface until Friday evening.

Kyle Louis when asked about the duo of him and Rasheem Biles. “We’re high level, Sunday linebackers. You go one way you see Rasheem, you go the other way, you see me. Pick your poison with that.” Louis and Biles were both outstanding again on Saturday.

Mason Heintschel was asked how he stayed prepared for this opportunity, even after not starting a game yet. “I think its the help from the other quarterbacks, them pushing me to be the best QB I can, and all the work we put in as a group. It showed today with a big dub.”

Pitt now sits at 3-2 and 1-1 in conference play. We shall see if Mason Heintschel can lead them on the road in a tough environment next week at Florida State. It will be like nothing Mason has played in before.
