Pitt vs. Miami 2025 Preview: Win or Go Home

Pitt Football, Pitt Panthers, The League Winners

The Pitt Panthers welcome the Miami Hurricanes to Acrisure Stadium for their final regular season game of the 2025 season, and this game could not be more important for both teams. With a win, Miami will have a strong case for an at-large CFP bid with a 10-2 record. If Pitt wins, they keep their ACC title and playoff hopes alive, while still needing one of SMU or Virginia to lose their final games. Both teams have had great seasons with a couple tough losses. Let’s dive into the preview for this ACC blockbuster.

Pitt Panthers vs. Miami Hurricanes 2025 College Football Preview

Matchup History

Pitt and Miami have a long history dating back to the old days of the Big East in the 1990s and early 2000s. The Hurricanes lead the all time series 29-12-1. Since Pitt joined them in the ACC, they are only 3-7 against the Canes.

One of those wins came on Black Friday in 2017, when an undefeated Miami team came to Pittsburgh one win away from a College Football Playoff birth. True freshman quarterback Kenny Pickett made his first career start for Pitt and unbelievably upset the No. 2 Canes, effectively ending their season. Pitt has especially struggled in ranked matchups at home recently, so it will be interesting to see if they can handle the athleticism of Miami.

Keys to the Game and Predicitions

Key Players for Pitt

Freshman running back Ja’Kyrian Turner is coming off the best game of his career last week against Georgia Tech. In the absence of Desmond Reid, Turner ran the ball 21 times for 201 yards, including a 56-yard dagger to put the game out of reach in the fourth quarter. Reid is again questionable this week. However, even if he is healthy, expect to see Turner heavily involved in the run game with Reid lining up as a receiver more than he usually would.

Another freshman to keep your eyes on is cornerback Shawn Lee. Lee has been the Panthers’ best corner all season, and will most likely be tasked with guarding Miami’s freshman phenom Malachi Toney. Lee leads all freshman cornerbacks in PFF and coverage grade. If Pitt wants to win this game they will need Lee and the rest of the secondary to play their best ball against Miami’s passing attack.

Key Players for Miami

Quarterback Carson Beck has had an erratic season with the Canes this year. After starting 5-0 and being one of the Heisman favorites, he threw a combined six interceptions in Miami’s losses to Louisville and SMU. Now, he has to go to Pittsburgh, where the temperature could be in the 20s at kickoff, something he did not experience in the SEC. If Beck plays turnover-free ball, the Hurricanes should win. If he is under duress and makes a couple mistakes, this could be another November nightmare for Miami. The team only goes as far as Beck takes them; the win over Notre Dame is a great example of that.

Freshman wide receiver Malachi Toney made his presence felt early in the season, and has been Carson Beck’s go to guy ever since. Just last week against Virginia Tech he had 12 catches for 146 yards and a TD. On the year he is over 800 yards and has 6 scores. As I’ve mentioned many times before, Pitt is known for leaving their DBs on an island while bringing pressure. Toney’s speed might make Narduzzi think twice about leaving him in single coverage, especially if Pitt is struggling to get to Carson Beck.

Miami has plenty of talent to go around, but their offense has shown multiple times this year that it runs through Beck and Toney.

Game Prediction

Outside of the Notre Dame game, Pitt has been playing on the ropes every week since the Louisville loss. That will not change this week, as they could be one win away from the ACC Championship.

Vegas opened the line at Miami -7, and it has since moved down to 6.5 where I think it will stay. This game really comes down to one thing. Can Pitt put pressure on Carson Beck?

For the first time this year, both teams will walk into a winter environment where it might not be easy to throw. Pitt should be able to lean on their running backs, and defensively, force Beck into enough mistakes to pull off the upset. This game will be a defensive battle, where whoever makes the first big mistake loses.

Score Prediction: Pitt 20, Miami 17
