Roster Cloggers after Week 1

The League Winners, Fantasy Football, Roster Cloggers After Week 1

Locking in on your fantasy football roster cloggers after Week 1.

Week 1 was fun; with a few disappointments and tons of storylines. Now that it’s in the books, we have more information. And with it, becomes crucial decision-making for fantasy football managers. It’s time to start looking at our rosters and putting some players on the chopping block. For this piece, we will look at players rostered in at least 35% of leagues in either ESPN or Sleeper fantasy apps. You’ll never put these players in your lineup, and you can’t trust them – so why are they on your fantasy team? These are your Roster Cloggers after Week 1.

Gerald Everett, TE – Los Angeles Chargers

My first roster clogger of 2023 is going to be Gerald Everett. I liked Everett a decent amount heading into the year. I thought he could be a high-upside TE2 play. After Week 1, it’s become apparent that you won’t be able to trust the Los Angeles Chargers tight ends this season. Donald Parham emerged as a reliable option for Justin Herbert in game one. He hauled in all three targets for 31 yards and a touchdown. You’ll want to continue monitoring the Chargers tight end room throughout the season. Everett is currently being roster in 49.4% of all ESPN leagues. This number is way too high. Make sure you drop Gerald Everett this week and pick up a player that will be more beneficial to your lineup.

Kenny Pickett, QB – Pittsburgh Steelers

Kenny Pickett guy showed so much promise and potential in the preseason. Then, Week 1 happened, where he looked abysmal against the San Francisco 49ers. He completed 31 of 46 pass attempts for 232 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions.

I believe Pickett has room for growth, but there are many better options on the waiver wire. I’ll cut him slack because the 49ers easily have the best defense in the NFL. However, he still seemed to have regressed or made no progress. Pickett is currently rostered in 38.4% of ESPN leagues. I’m positive he’ll find his stride at some point in the season. As for now, there’s absolutely zero reason to put him in your fantasy football lineup (or team).

Zach Charbonnet, RB – Seattle Seahawks

I honestly don’t know what to say about Zach Charbonnet. I had high hopes for him this offseason and thought he would make a push for touches in the backfield. However, Pete Carroll decided to let me know how little I know about the NFL. I’m sure a lot of us were astonished at the lack of usage Charbonnet had in Week 1. He posted a lowly 24% snap share and three rushing attempts. It remains to be seen how or when they will work in him into that backfield. For now, I think it’s best to go ahead and put him on the waiver wire until we see improved usage, he’s one of the roster cloggers until something changes.

Rashaad Penny, RB, Philadelphia Eagles

These running backs are killing us. I’m not quite sure what the Philadelphia Eagles are doing right now. Kenneth Gainwell saw 18 touches, and D’Andre Swift saw only three opportunities. Meanwhile, Rashaad Penny, Philly’s first RB signing of the offseason, started his Eagles career as a healthy scratch. I’m not sure if they’re playing mind games in Philly or if they genuinely don’t like Penny. Either way, he’s rostered in at least 69% of leagues on Sleeper and ESPN fantasy apps. With Gainwell likely to miss the Week 2 matchup, you can firmly drop Penny to the waiver wire after the game.

Jalin Hyatt, WR, New York Giants

Jalin Hyatt was nonexistent for the New York Giants on Sunday night. The third-round pick out of Tennessee could not bring in his lone target of the night. We had high hopes Hyatt could separate himself in an unimpressive New York WR room. However, he was fourth among WRs in snaps. It’s still unsure how this pecking order will turn out in New York, but I don’t see how Hyatt can assert himself if he can’t get on the field. For now, Hyatt belongs on the waiver wire until he can prove that hes worth a roster spot.

It was an exhilarating football weekend, and we’re all glad it’s back. Let’s not lose sight of the prize, and that is fantasy football championships. We need our rosters in top shape, so rostering these players is probably a waste of space for now. Feel safe dropping them, as they’re not likely to make any significant fantasy contributions unless an injury occurs. Find out who makes the Roster Cloggers list next week!
