Syracuse Orange vs. UConn Huskies 2025: Must-Know Keys to the Game

It’s the Syracuse Orange vs. UConn Huskies in a 2025 Week 2 showdown. Connecticut will make the trip to the JMA Wireless Dome for another meeting with the Orange – a team they’re very familiar with.

Things are going well for the UConn Huskies. After a 9-4 season in 2024, the Huskies steamrolled past Central Connecticut State behind an energetic 37,000+ at The Rent in Week 1. Things have shifted: UConn is no longer one of the laughing stocks of FBS football.

But are they ready to take the next leap to be taken seriously? While UConn beat North Carolina in the Fenway Bowl, it came against a team without most of its starters and during a transition of regimes. The Huskies are yet to prove they can win the biggest games against high-level competition. They were 0-4 against P4 schools a season ago in regular season play, which included a 31-24 loss to Syracuse in Week 13.

Meanwhile, Syracuse is a team that lost a plethora of pieces from a season ago, and suffered the consequences in a blowout loss to Tennessee in Week 1. However, they still remain touchdown favorites ahead of this contest.

Can UConn overcome their roadblock and win a high-stakes game on the road? Or will Syracuse bounce-back and keep themselves in contention heading into conference play?

Syracuse Orange vs. UConn Huskies: Matchup History

All-in, the two major basketball universities have faced off in football 12 times entering Saturday’s contest dating back to 2004. After losing the first contest, the Huskies proceeded to win six consecutive head-to-head meetings. However, Syracuse has now taken the last five. So, entering this 2025 matchup, the all-time record stands at 6-6.

The competition between these two schools has picked up steam as of late. There is now an annual series taking place between both programs. Syracuse and UConn have agreed to face each other in three of the next four seasons, after having already faced each other in two of the last three campaigns. This gives Syracuse an opportunity for an out-of-conference battle against a rising program. And on the other hand, it gives UConn an opportunity to put themselves on the map with a victory against an ACC opponent.

The Huskies fell short of such a goal last November, when they traveled to Syracuse and lost. Although the score ended with a one-touchdown defeat, UConn knows that the Orange held full control, and that they were outclassed on all levels in this matchup.

“Syracuse was certainly the better team that day,” UConn reporter Adam Giardino told The League Winners. “The eye test didn’t tell you that it should’ve been a one score game. Syracuse is not as talented as they were last year, but I only say that because of how talented they were last year.”

UConn head coach Jim Mora also eluded to this. Last year, Syracuse quarterback Kyle McCord threw for nearly 500 yards, and the Orange had three different 100-yard receivers. Although McCord and many key offensive pieces have departed, so have a handful of UConn defenders. They have nine new starters this season. So it’s pretty much two completely new teams looking for one major win.

Syracuse vs. UConn 2025: Keys to the Game and Predictions

Key Players for Syracuse

Heading into Week 2, this matchup is important for Syracuse. After finishing 20th in the AP poll a season ago, the Orange were ranked just the 12th-best team in the ACC’s preseason media poll. The expectations are lower in year two under head coach Fran Brown. However, they are hoping to still remain a competitive program. A loss at home to the independent Huskies would set them back greatly.

To win this game, quarterback Steve Angeli is going to need to have a strong outing. He struggled against No.24-ranked Tennessee, completing just 23-of-40 passes for 274 yards with one touchdown and interception. Not much went Angeli’s way in that game. Tennessee sacked him five times and he wasn’t connecting well with his new receiving corps.

While the Orange offense runs through its ground attack, a strong performance from Angeli would be vital if Syracuse wants to take down the surging Huskies.

Yet, the Syracuse rushing game will certainly be the key part of its offense. Yasin Willis took the bulk of the carries last week, going for 91 yards and three touchdowns. Will Nixon could also make some noise. Both were on the Doak Walker Preseason Watch List for the country’s best running back.

The Huskies like to control the game on the ground and control the time of possession. That becomes much tougher if the Orange succeed running the football.

Key Players for Connecticut

UConn is coming off of a major victory, but against an FCS school. They still need to prove they can compete with high-level ACC competition. So, they need their stars to shine.

Running backs Camryn Edwards and Mel Brown will need to be productive, and wide receiver Skyler Bell needs to continue to thrive. But they’ll also need unsung heroes to pull-away with a win.

At running back, expect a big day from Victor Rosa. He’s the RB4 in a crowded tailback room in Connecticut, but his resume is unquestioned. He was a critical part of the Huskies offense during their 2022 campaign, and has had his collegiate career hampered by injury. However, he’s a powerful runner who now looks fully-healthy in this UConn attack.

“Victor Rosa is a guy that I think deserves the opportunity to be in that mix,” Giardino said. “He showed some signs in garbage time against Central Connecticut, too. Maybe he can shine under the spotlight.”

And defensively, D’Mon Brinson needs to remain a threat in the secondary. He was a huge part of their success against the pass versus Central in the home opener. He’s been with UConn for a few seasons, but now has finally blossomed into a star. After their lack of effectiveness against McCord and the Orange passing attack last season, a strong day from Brinson could help clean things up.

How Syracuse Wins

The Orange enter Saturday’s game as a 6.5-point favorite, though the Huskies will pose a threat. This was one of the sharpest teams in the country defensively in 2024. And, they’re starting one of FBS’s most efficient starting quarterbacks from a year ago.

Mistakes could be costly. However, every variable leans towards the Orange to win this game. They have home field advantage, and just scored 26 points against a high-level SEC defense. Could that translate into their first win?

First, they need to take away the threat of UConn’s rushing attack. The longer the Huskies can stay in a game, the more fearful they become. If the Orange take an early lead and force the Huskies to abandon the run, the chances significantly favor Syracuse.

UConn quarterback Joe Fagnano was efficient last year, but hasn’t shown that he can command an offense on his own. This is particularly true if the threat of the run isn’t there. Coach Brown should plan to shut down the run, and force Fagnano to beat their defense through the air.

Offensively, the Orange need to execute on third down. Last season, the Huskies were fourth in the country in opponent third down conversion rate, and first in three-and-out rate. They took a bend-but-don’t-break approach against Central, and it paid off because of their dominant third down defense. The Blue Devils were just 5-of-16 on third down attempts, prompting many fourth down decisions.

The Orange, on the other hand, are far more loaded than the FCS program. They were eighth in the country last season in third down conversion rate. If a new group of pieces can find the same success against this Husky defense, than they’ll score points quicker than UConn would want to admit.

How UConn Wins

While the Huskies come in as an underdog, there is a true possibility that they find a way to come out on top. Syracuse isn’t the same as it was last year. And, last year’s problems against the Orange shouldn’t haunt UConn a season later. However, this UConn team is also starting new pieces on both ends, and they are yet to prove that they’re as cohesive as their 2024 group.

First, UConn’s defense needs to make quarterback Steve Angeli’s life miserable. While the Huskies do a great job at preventing touchdowns, they struggle to force negative plays that are indispensable when facing an ACC-team on the road. They were middle of the pack in sacks last season, and forced less turnovers than they committed even though they took care of the ball prodigiously on offense.

This is Angeli’s first true opportunity as a starting quarterback in the FBS. UConn should try and get to him behind the line of scrimmage, and jar a ball loose one or way or another to wreck his momentum.

Offensively, Fagnano needs to play the game of his life. Syracuse will go into this game and force UConn to beat them through the air. It’s a logical approach after the Huskies were one of the country’s most productive rushing offenses last year. In his seventh and final collegiate season, this has to be the game where Fagnano puts on the cape.

Fagnano looked calm and controlled against Central, though the Orange are a different level of competition. He needs to prove he can be a star in this game, and will have to do so if the Huskies to plan to come back home with a victory.
