Syracuse vs. Duke 2025 Preview: Keys, Players and Predictions

Syracuse Football, Syracuse Orange, Rickie Collins, The League Winners

The Syracuse Orange pulled off a miraculous upset over the Clemson Tigers in Week 4. The team didn’t come away unscathed, however, as quarterback Steve Angeli tore his Achilles in the contest. Now with Rickie Collins under center, Syracuse hosts the Duke Blue Devils in an ACC clash at the JMA Wireless Dome. It’s a Syracuse vs. Duke showdown in Week 5, so let’s dive into this 2025 game preview.

Syracuse Orange vs. Duke Blue Devils: Matchup History and Game Excerpts

Syracuse and Duke have played each other five times in college football. Almost unbelievably, the two faced off for the first time in 1938, and playing again in 1939, with Duke winning each contest. Yet inexplicably, they didn’t play again until the 2014 season – which Duke also won. The last time these teams played was in 2020, which Syracuse lost yet again. In those five matchups, the Orange have only won once, a 49-6 drubbing in North Carolina in 2019. And speaking to the media, Syracuse head coach Fran Brown knows the importance of this matchup.

“Duke’s a really good football team. Manny Diaz is a really good football coach; smart, intelligent man,” began Coach Brown. “They have a team full of really good football players. I think they play the best football out of everyone we’re about to go and play; they play together, you can see they care about each other. They play hard, physical, and they all do their jobs. There aren’t too many mistakes on the football field.”

Coach Brown also gave credit to numerous players on the Duke football team, as well as the Blue Devil’s coaching staff.

For Duke, they are looking to carry momentum into this matchup. The Blue Devils have already won their first game of conference play, and look to win again on the road in Week 5. Speaking to the media ahead of their matchup with the Orange, Duke head coach Manny Diaz gave heavy praise to Syracuse and Coach Brown.

“What Fran Brown has done there … considering the state of where the program was when he got there, is one of the best coaching jobs in the country,” began Coach Diaz. “You watch the film and you see it. If you look at the way they went down to Death Valley last week, and from the opening tip, just completely dominated the game. You know that they’re extraordinarily dangerous in all three phases. It will be a good challenge for our guys.”

Key Players for Syracuse

Without Steve Angeli, quarterback Rickie Collins is an obvious key player for Syracuse. While the LSU-transfer has seen some playing time this season, it’s still a mystery as to how he will perform throughout four full quarters. Given the quick turnaround, it’s hard to see offensive coordinator Jeff Nixon implement a new scheme harbored to Collins’ strengths. Yet, the quarterback will be relied upon to make big plays. Angeli didn’t just lead the league in passing yards due to his own accord – Syracuse wants to throw the football and attack defenses. And despite the quarterback change, we shouldn’t expect anything less against Duke. With that said, considering the Blue Devil’s struggles against mobile quarterbacks, it may be a good idea for Syracuse to attack that way, too.

Another key player on offense is running back Yasin Willis. Despite Duke getting gashed by NC State’s Daylan Smothers last week, the Blue Devils’ run defense has been stout. The unit allows around 150 rushing yards per game, but most of that has been from quarterbacks. Syracuse needs to try and break Duke’s front seven, and that starts with Willis.

Despite having finesse aspects to his game, Willis has been a bruiser for Syracuse this season. His 180 yards after contact are T-45th at the position. Yet his breakaway percentage ranks 110th, signaling that the running back has yet to showcase all of his talents. While a bruiser mentality works, Cuse needs Willis to put together another excellent game on the ground. If he’s able to gash Duke’s defense for big runs while punishing defenders in the process, it will bode well for Syracuse.

On defense, Syracuse needs to be able to defend the run. Duke has had success when their run game is working. When they haven’t, they have struggled as an offense. So far, Syracuse has done a good job (for the most part) in containing opposing running backs. If they can do that again on Saturday, they should leave JMA with a victory.

Key Players for Duke

Like Syracuse, the biggest key player for Duke is their quarterback, Darian Mensah. Mensah is currently third in the nation in passing yards (1305), yet when he is passing for volume, it’s usually because Duke is struggling in their contest. That’s not to take anything away from Mensah, though, who has played superb football in his own right.

The Blue Devils quarterback has the eighth-highest ADOT, and 13th-best big time throw percentage, meaning he’s not shy about making plays downfield. Duke’s offensive line has helped him out, too. Mensah’s time to throw is 11th-highest among FBS quarterbacks at 3.06 seconds. If he’s given time in the pocket to make plays, he could make Syracuse pay downfield. Mensah is an explosive player, and a good game from him will be vital for Duke.

On defense, the key players for Duke are their edge defenders, Wesley Williams and Vincent Anthony Jr. While teams have been focusing on stopping Williams this season, Anthony has put on a tear, with five sacks so far this season. Against Syracuse, Williams and Anthony will be important for setting the edge, and getting to the quarterback.

Unlike Steve Angeli, there’s a chance Rickie Collins is a bit more mobile in the pocket. And, his lack of in-game experience could cause some mistakes. For Duke, they need to capitalize on any potential errors, and make life rough for Collins in this game. If they can stop Syracuse from successfully passing the ball, they likely win this game.

2025 Game Preview: How Syracuse Wins vs. Duke in Week 5

For Syracuse to win this contest, the Orange need to play mistake-free football. Yes, there’s a new starting quarterback. However, there are ways to limit turnover opportunities if everyone does their job. If the offensive line keeps Rickie Collins secure, while creating lanes in the rushing attack,  Syracuse won’t have any issue putting points on the board. Collins just needs to make sure to avoid pressure, make the right reads and execute. If he does that, the offense will have success.

Meanwhile, the defense needs to force Duke to be one-dimensional. If Duke can’t run the ball, they will be forced into third-and-long situations. And despite their 41.67-conversion rate, converting with 5+ yards to go becomes harder to accomplish with each attempt. We’ve seen Tulane and Illinois have success stopping Duke’s rushing attack, and the Blue Devils lost both of those games. If Syracuse can do the same, they can win this matchup.

Finally, Syracuse needs to be disciplined. They can’t make many mental errors in a game versus Duke. That means no false starts, no pass interference penalties, or missed assignments. The Orange will need to be a well-oiled machine at JMA Wireless, and if they can do that, they should remain undefeated in conference play.
