SYRACUSE, NY — It’s bee a turbulent 2025 season for the Syracuse Orange. After a Week 1 loss to Tennessee, Syracuse rattled off three consecutive wins – including upsetting the Clemson Tigers in Death Valley. And in Week 5, Cuse hosted the Duke Blue Devils to a sold-out crowd at JMA Wireless Dome. Unfortunately, Syracuse wasn’t able to muster more magic, ultimately falling short to the Blue Devils, 38-3. With that said, let’s dive into the Syracuse vs. Duke recap for this 2025 matchup.
Syracuse vs. Duke 2025 Game Recap
Offensive Struggles
When Steve Angeli was injured against Clemson, watching the offense have growing pains under a new quarterback was expected. And, those pains came at the forefront for Syracuse against Duke.
Collins seemed indecisive at times and looked like he was having issues reading the Duke defensive adjustments post-snap. While his interception in the first half was mostly due to his arm being hit, Collins still had a performance that he would like to have back.
In the first half, Collins was just 9-of-16 passing for 90 yards without a score. In fact, when Syracuse was in the redzone, Collins took a bad sack instead of throwing the football away. It’s not an end-of-the-world mistake, but it’s the type of growing pains Orange fans will see under Collins that Steve Angeli did not have.
Questionable Officiating
No, this isn’t a “blame the refs” segment. However, there were some incredibly concerning officiating moments in this contest. The biggest came on a Johntay Cook catch, where the receiver was held up by Duke defensive backs before being headhunted by Blue Devil’s Jaiden Francois. While the initial ruling was a personal foul with a review on targeting, the review saw the penalty get lifted, and a fumble recovered by Duke was the call. While technically the fumble did occur, there’s zero question that targeting was the call to make on the field. Or, at the very least, a stop of forward progress and a personal foul penalty on defense.
Absolute worst replay review I have ever seen in college football. Francois of Duke made forcible contact with head of Johntay Cook of Syracuse and that caused the fumble. Thats a targeting penalty. ACC refs are totally corrupt. pic.twitter.com/8gs0JAJqD3

Another questionable decision came on a fourth-down attempt by Collins intended for Justus Ross-Simmons. The receiver made an incredible diving catch along the boundary that was initially called a catch. Yet, after further review, the call was overturned. Personally, it didn’t look like there was enough evidence to reverse the call. And, it was yet another ruling that went against Syracuse in this contest.
Lack of Lateral Speed
The biggest weakness for Syracuse in this contest was their lack of lateral speed. Duke’s offensive gameplan seemed simple – they were attacking the boundaries and forcing the Orange defense to close in, and make tackles. And for the most part, Syracuse failed in this regard.
There were multiple plays where Duke shifted personnel, showing Syracuse’s coverage – which allowed them to take advantage when the defense was being spread thin. At that point, it was more or less one-on-one situations for Duke ball-carriers, where they won more times than not.
Now, part of this issue is also on the front seven. If they were able to consistently pressure the quarterback, some of Duke’s big plays do not happen. And, blitzing on the wrong side has left open holes for the Blue Devils’ offense to exploit. In all, the defense needs to make sure they are playing fundamentally sound. They may not have the speed to face some of the elite talent in the conference right now.
Syracuse vs. Duke 2025 Game Recap: Other Notes
Yasin Willis Runs Angry
Sophomore running back Yasin Willis continues to showcase why he needs to be more involved in the offense. In the first half, Willis hurdled a defender during a 35-yard rush attempt. While he wasn’t able to get into the endzone, he showed he is more than just a power back in this game. Syracuse needs to start getting him more involved, especially with Rickie Collins under center.

Offensive Adjustments?
In the preview for this contest, we highlighted why it may be impossible to change the offense so quickly under Rickie Collins. However, if Syracuse wants to have success, they may have no other choice. Getting Collins on the move, and the offense with it could open up throwing lanes. It could also get the quarterback to see the field more clearly. On top of everything else, utilizing Collins’ speed as a runner can equally provide opportunity. It’ll be interesting to see how Syracuse adjusts going forward.
Special Teams Miscues
After a week where Syracuse special teams looked fantastic, it did not look the part in Week 5. The Orange return team, on both punt and kickoffs, did a poor job in this contest. The return units consistently kept Syracuse backed up near their own endzone, putting pressure on the offense. In big games against conference opponents, this can’t happen.
Duke’s Freshman Breaks Out
If you didn’t know the name Nate Sheppard before this contest, you do now. The freshman running back was the primary ball-carrier for Duke in this matchup, and he surpassed expectations.
The running back displayed a great combination of speed and power ability. He ran over defenders, made them miss in space, and out-ran Syracuse players when he broke free.

Shrine Bowl Prospect Watch
Syracuse Orange
Safety Duce Chestnut continues to put together impressive performances for the Syracuse defense. When other players aren’t in the right gap, or making one-on-one tackles, Chestnut is the exception. The safety has great versatility and toughness. It’s something the Orange defense needs, and it bodes well for his prospects as an NFL player going forward.
Duke Blue Devils
Edge defenders Vincent Anthony Jr. and Wesley Williams both had great games in this contest. The duo consistently provided pressure, and were on the backfield numerous times. With Williams being a focal point for most offenses, Anthony has utilized the opportunity to really step up for Duke having a career-best season.
On offense, wide receiver Cooper Barkate is hard to ignore. He’s a grinder who just puts together good performances. In this contest, he scored two touchdowns. And quite frankly, he made it look easy. Barkate showcased good route-running and strong hands at the catch point. He was a major reason the Duke offense flowed so well.
What’s Next for Syracuse?
Syracuse travels to Texas to take on the SMU Mustangs in Week 6. SMU will be coming off a bye entering this matchup, so they will have plenty of time to prepare for Syracuse. It’ll be a difficult task for the Orange. However, it’ll be a much-needed test for this unit after their disappointing performance against Duke.
