Drama in Logan
The Utah State Aggies caught the college football world guard this week with news of the firing head coach Blake Anderson and deputy AD Jerry Bovee. According to the school, the firings were a result of a failure in the reporting process for sexual misconduct within Anderson’s football program.
While Bovee has vehemently denied these allegations, Anderson has not yet made a statement on the decision. Anderson has been a coach since 1992, and has been coaching the Aggies since 2021. With the Aggies, Anderson has a 23-17 record, with his best season coming in his first, where the Aggies finished 11-3 en route to a bowl win.
Replacing Anderson at Utah State will be Nate Dreiling. Dreiling was hired as the defensive coordinator for the Aggies this year, and will become the youngest FBS head coach in 2024.
A New Defensive Guru Emerging
The term innovator is usually reserved for offensive coaches, but David Hale of ESPN may have brought light to one of the most unique defensive minds in college football.
Defensive coordinator Kevin May of Division II’s Seton Hill spent the Covid-stricken seasons inventing a new style of defensive, coined “the flex”. May learned the scheme working under Wyoming coach David Brown in the early 2010s, but made some changes to the base system which have paid instant dividends.
Prior to May’s arrival in Seton Hill in 2018, the school ranked 157th in scoring defense, 159th in rush defense and 152nd in sacks among all Division II schools. In his first season implementing the new system in 2021, the school ranked 27th in scoring defense, ninth in rush defense while nearly tripling their sack total. Since then, the school has had back-to-back conference defensive players of the year. And in 2023, they finished fifth in sacks and TFL’s while earning their first winning record in 15 years.
May’s system hasn’t caught on at a national level yet. However, it’s only a matter of time until the results can no longer be ignored.
Jahzare Jackson Comes Back to Football
Jahzare Jackson was an elite football prospect, who received offers from Alabama and Ohio State before he entered the seventh grade. Yes, you read that correctly. While some kids were getting ready for middle school, Jackson was getting college football offers. And yet while Jackson did play some high school football, he primarily made his name on the basketball court.
In fact, Jackson was even part of the 2024 NBA draft player pool and played AAU alongside Lebron James’ son, Bronny James. However, on Wednesday, Jackson announced that he would be officially pursuing a career in football.

Although he’s still a raw player, Jackson’s potential was on full display at the FSU football elite camp back in June. It’ll be interesting to see how he develops as a prospect in college football going forward.
College Football 25 Release

Today, EA Sports will release gameplay of College Football 25. The studio also plans on releasing the rosters on Wednesday. Meanwhile, College Ultimate Team will see its unveiling on Tuesday, with Road to Glory being revealed on Thursday. In short, it will be a busy week leading up to the game’s July 19 release date.
