The CFB Newsletter: College Football News – Enter Week 1

The CFB Newsletter, College Football News, The League Winners

Week 0 saw the surprise upset of Florida State from Georgia Tech overseas, a game that no one other than GT fans saw coming. However, we’re now entering Week 1, where the rest of the college football world is ready and waiting. And with it, plenty of news will surface about everyone’s favorite college football teams. As always, the CFB newsletter is here to bring that news to the forefront for college football fans.

Picking and Choosing?

Colorado Buffaloes head coach Deion Sanders is facing criticism for ignoring questions presented to him by certain members of the media who have become critical of the school – and his coaching. There’s actually a clause in the coach’s contract that allows him to be this way, though, so it’s hard to feel bad for journalists who continue to choose covering the team knowing these facts.

However, the latest critic of Sanders is Jim Trotter of The Athletic, who didn’t pull any punches when discussing Sanders’ habits handling the media in his latest article.

Here Come the Allegations

After delivering a show-cause and other predictable penalties, the NCAA has finally delivered a Notice of Allegations to the Michigan Wolverines for their sign-stealing scandal. Michigan has 90 days to respond to the scandal, but the most likely outcome seems to be negative for the Wolverines. As news and leaks continue to surface, it’s hard to defend Michigan from what they’ve been accused of. It will be very interesting to see how this news develops, and how the college football world reacts.

Jelly Roll and ESPN?

ESPN has announced their ‘anthem’ for the upcoming college football season. And to the surprise of many, it is former rapper-now-turned country singer, Jelly Roll, and his song, ‘Get By’.

Jelly Roll has been a legend in the south for years. Yet changing music genres has seemingly put him in the spotlight at a national level. The announcement has been hit with less than favorable responses thus far, but it’s likely fans liken up to the music as it’s force-fed to them for the next couple of months.

Mike Gundy Has Had Enough

In the past couple of years, college football has seemed like less of a game involving amateur athletes, and more of a professional money-laundering scheme. Its replication of the NFL in many ways is concerning, and Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy is one of the many frustrated with what college football has become.

“The business side of what we do now — we have to have those conversations with [the players],” Gundy said. “Tell your agent to quit calling us and asking for more money. It’s non-negotiable now. It’ll start again in December.”

It’s hard to fault coach Gundy for feeling this way. After all NIL money has all but ruined the amateur aspect of the sport. And, while college athletes deserve to be paid, it’s clear that the league is facing a slippery slope if they can’t get a handle on it soon.
