Rutgers AD Steps Down

Rutgers football had their athletic director step down on Friday, citing health reasons. Patt Hobbs, 64, has been with the Scarlet Knights since 2015. In his place, Ryan Pisarri, the deputy AD will take over as the interim AD for the school.

“After meeting with my cardiac team this week and having just been apprised of the results of my latest round of testing, it is clear that I can not continue to serve as Athletic Director given the requirements of the position,” Hobbs wrote in an email to school president Jonathan Holloway. “I recognize this is not the ideal timeframe to depart, however other factors need to take precedence.”

The AP Releases their Preseason Top-25

With college football ever-near, the AP has released their top-25 rankings heading into the 2024 season. The Georgia Bulldogs will be atop the rankings to start the season, with Ohio State and Oregon rounding out the top-3. Other interesting names in the rankings include Utah (12), Miami (19), Southern Cal (23) and North Carolina State (24).

Preseason All-Americans

Alongside the preseason rankings, the AP has announced their picks for the preseason All-American teams. The First-Team offense is headlined by Georgia’s sixth year quarterback Carson Beck. Running back Ollie Gordon II and wide receiver Luther Burden III are two other noteworthy players on the team.

Meanwhile, the defense is highlighted by Michigan’s Will Johnson (cornerback) and Mason Graham (defensive tackle). Georgia’s Malaki Starks (safety) is another noteworthy player on the team, among others. Colorado two-way player Travis Hunter was named as the team’s all-purpose player. You can find the rest of the list, as well as the Second-Team, here.

Colt McCoy Goes into Broadcasting

Former Texas Longhorns quarterback Colt McCoy is retiring from the NFL after playing 14 seasons at the professional level. The former Heisman finalist announced on his X (formerly Twitter) account that he will be moving into the broadcast booth, joining the Big Ten Network. There, he will be an analyst for the network, as well as a part of their “Big Ten College Countdown” segment. He will make his debut in the broadcast booth September 7, when Colorado faces Nebraska.

A Second Playoff?

With college football adopting a true playoff system going forward, there will undoubtedly be some teams that feel left out. Interestingly, a number of Group of 5 schools are reportedly exploring a postseason invitational for teams who miss out on the playoffs, per ON3. With concerns that the new format could drive revenue away from G5 schools, the league’s in-person meeting in Dallas next week will address this possibility, as well as a few others as they look to remain competitive with some of their bigger counterparts.
