Urban Meyer no longer coaching the Jaguars is a godsend for fantasy football players.
The time has come. As of December 15th, 2021 Urban Meyer has been fired as head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars. We can breathe. Trevor Lawrence can finally breathe. James Robinson can finally breathe. Should I continue? We all know what this really means for Jacksonville, but has the damage already been done?
Coming into this season, Urban Meyer had an immense amount of pressure laid on his shoulders. Meyer was given the keys to a Lamborghini but had never once drove one. He was gifted one of the best QB prospects we’ve seen to date in Trevor Lawrence, and managed to run him and company directly into the ground. Where do we even start?
I remember a time back in training camp when Urban Meyer was giving valuable 1st team reps to Gardner Minshew. You would think that you’d try to teach and develop your #1 overall pick. Instead, he decided eat into that crucial time for a rookie for a guy he’d later trade to Philadelphia for a bag of donuts (Not really, it was a 6th round pick). The pure stupidity that has to go into that thought process is beyond my level of understanding. This was only the first sign of utter incompetence from Urban Meyer.
The Trevor Lawrence Slip
Trevor Lawrence was highly touted as a prospect; some even say generational. While I never fully got to that point, I understood his abilities, both good and bad. His problems in college started to leak into his early season play.
Lawrence would find himself throwing to avoid pressure leading to interceptions, he would take unnecessary shots down field, and it never felt like he fully understood the playbook (or the play-calling.) For a guy of Trevor Lawrence’s magnitude, he wasn’t able to overcome the problems in the coach’s office.
You can usually point out progression from a rookie throughout each week of their rookie season, but it doesn’t seem that Lawrence really learned anything. He seems tired, and fed up with the fact that his coach spent more time on the news than in the film room. The overall progression for Lawrence has done it’s damage, leading to a negative TD/INT ratio and a 2-11 record to this point.
James Robinson – From Top Dog to Dog House
It gets worse. We all can recall a time when James Robinson was atop what felt like every RB metric as a rookie. James Robinson did things that were unheard of from a rookie, let alone an undrafted rookie. He proved his worth in gold, and showed he can be an anchor in the backfield for years to come.
Well, Urban Meyer got cute. He decided to spend valuable 1st round draft capital on RB Travis Etienne, Trevor Lawrence’s college teammate. While we didn’t really get a true answer on Meyer’s plans for Etienne, his process was wrong from the get-go.
Etienne would unfortunately go on to suffer a Lisfranc injury before Week 1. Urban Meyer then doubled down. He managed James Robinson almost like a babysitter. He monitored his every snap and play, and pulled him at inopportune times for Carlos Hyde. I’m not sure why Urban Meyer wouldn’t play James Robinson, but it was just another sign of pure incompetence.
2022, Another Rebirth
Every single Jacksonville Jaguar player had their fantasy football dynasty value go up last night. Every single Jaguar saw their future get just that much more brighter. It’s finally the end of an era, an era that only lasted 336 days. It’s time to smile Jacksonville, because now you can enjoy your Lamborghini without someone crashing it.
