Trey Lance suffers ankle injury – What does that mean for the 49ers offense?

Trey Lance Carted Off

Trey Lance suffers an unfortunate ankle injury in today’s game against Seattle. Lance is likely to be out for the year after being carted off and his ankle put into a cast, so in comes Jimmy Garoppolo. Depending on how Garoppolo plays for the remainder of this year the landscape of the 49ers offense changes drastically. Let’s take a look at some of the weapons he has.

Projections Moving Forward

Deebo Samuel and Brandon Aiyuk both have a positive outlook in my eyes. The team will continue to focus on the run, but will have to change the scheme to fit a non-mobile quarterback. We will see Deebo in the backfield more often, as well as an increased workload for Aiyuk. I predict George Kittle to be a top five tight end once he returns from his groin injury. As far as the running backs go, there a few to look at.

Jeff Wilson is the expected starter in this offense without Elijah Mitchell. Should he get hurt, there are two options to keep an eye on. Tyrion Davis-Price and Jordan Mason are the presumed two and three on the team. The 49ers have a history of being unpredictable in the backfield, so stashing either one on your bench is a toss up. I like Mason more, as he received a fair amount of preseason hype.

We know what to expect from a Jimmy G led offense. Start your stars, but don’t hold hope for those further down the depth chart until we see more action from them. Godspeed to Trey Lance’s recovery.
