UCLA vs. Utah 2025: Must-Know Keys & Predictions

UCLA Football, UCLA Bruins, Utah Utes, Utah Football, The League Winners

The Bruins’ 2025 season kicks off at the Rose Bowl against the Utah Utes. Heading into year two of the DeShaun Foster era, UCLA is looking to flip the script from a 5-7 season last year. To open their season, it’s UCLA vs. the Utah Utes in Week 1, and predictions for this 2025 matchup are all over the place.

The Blue and Gold are headlined by none other than quarterback Nico Iamaleava — the No. 1 overall-ranked transfer. Carrying hype all offseason, Iamaleava will have his first opportunity on August 3o to steer UCLA back to its winning ways.

UCLA Bruins vs. Utah Utes: History and Excerpts

The Bruins and Utes are no strangers on the gridiron, as both were notable members of the Pac-12 conference.

In their history, both programs have met 21 times, with UCLA leading the all-time series 12-9. However, Utah has been the major successor in recent years, winning six of the last seven games. The last clash between the two was in 2023 when the Bruins fell short 14-7 on the road.

Much like UCLA, Utah struggled in its first year in a new conference, finishing 5-7 — plagued by glaring issues on offense. The parallel rolled into the offseason as both addressed their quarterback room and offensive coordinator. This leaves the stage for a proper matchup in 2025 and should result in a tightly contested game.

UCLA currently sits as a +6.5 underdog.

UCLA vs. Utah 2025: Must-Know Keys & Predictions

Key Players for UCLA

The obvious answer is Iamaleava. The talent is undeniable, and his potential is through the roof. He can make any throw on the field and extends plays with his legs. He’s an offensive coordinator’s dream and a defensive coordinator’s nightmare.

Iamaleava will operate in an offense constructed with transfer running backs Jaivian Thomas and Anthony Woods, along with Kwazi Gilmer and Mikey Matthews on the outside. The redshirt sophomore quarterback will have plenty to work with in his Blue and Gold debut.

Iamaleava will have the crowd behind him and a coaching staff that has been amped up for his arrival. It’ll be an opportunity to give Bruins fans a taste of what’s to come.

Though not a player, offensive coordinator Tino Sunseri will be just as impactful on how Week 1 plays out.

Sunseri was brought into Westwood after a historic 2024 season at Indiana. With the Hoosiers, Sunseri aided an 11-2 season (best in school history), orchestrated an offense that tallied 537 points and 70 touchdowns (both program records), 3397 passing yards (most since 2019) and 2146 rushing yards (most since 2015).

Sunseri’s offensive excellence is expected to ride into UCLA. He knows exactly how to dial up an offense and has arguably more talent to work with this year. His duality of schemes drives defenses to their limits.

Key Players for Utah

The Utes’ road to play spoiler starts with quarterback Devon Dampier. The junior transfer is still developing as a true passer, but his game as a rusher is game-changing.

Last season at New Mexico, Dampier was electric on the run. He was the country’s fourth-best rushing quarterback in terms of yards (1166), the third-best in touchdowns (19) and the seventh-best in yards per carry with 7.5 (minimum 50 carries).

UCLA’s thin front seven could very well struggle keeping Dampier in the pocket. Even when he’s not tucking and running, the Utah QB is still a threat.

Again, Dampier is not the most polished passer, but he has shown flashes of great accuracy and deep-ball ability. He’ll have fellow transfer Tobias Merriweather presumably commanding the WR-X role.

Merriweather is a 6-foot-5 wideout who brings much-needed size and speed to an unproven receiving room. He’s in a situation that allows him to showcase his full skillset, and Week 1, against a solid secondary, could be a place to start.

UCLA’s Path to Victory in Week 1

It’s going to be fireworks on both sides, but if the Bruins want to have a strong opener, getting out early is key. Foster can’t afford to have Iamaleava playing catch-up in his first game in the Blue and Gold.

Establishing the run early and often should be a weekly game plan, but against a stout defense like Utah’s, it’ll be important to have play-action available for the young quarterback. Having Iamaleava operate out of a simple script should be a priority, and keeping the ball out of harm’s way with short and intermediate routes is sure to get the ball moving.

Defensively, UCLA must contain the legs of Dampier. Once he looks to run, you’re in his world. Additionally, eliminating the rush early will allow for the Bruins to keep Utah in longer downs and distances — forcing a more pass-heavy approach for the Utes.

If UCLA manages to control the flow of the game, Week 1 should lead to the first of many wins.
