The UConn Huskies enter the 2025 college football season with high expectations and predictions, and their schedule reflects that. A returning group of strong veterans coupled with experienced transfers set the Huskies up for success this coming season. But even after a 9-4 campaign and a Fenway Bowl win a year ago, many still question whether UConn’s success in 2024 can be replicated. However, they have the talent, and the high-profile games on their schedule, to prove their worth in the coming season.
UConn Football: 2025 Game-By-Game Schedule Predictions
August 30: vs. Central Connecticut State Blue Devils
This home opener feels like a ‘gimme’ for UConn. Connecticut clobbered FCS’ Blue Devils by a 28-3 score in 2022, their lone head-to-head matchup. The Blue Devils have had, and will continue to have, success at the FCS level. They are expected to compete for an NEC title and postseason appearance. However, the rising FBS school will take care of them, handedly.
Result: Win (1-0)
September 6: at Syracuse Orange
This is one of three ACC games on the docket for UConn this coming season; I have them dropping the first. UConn showed they can compete with power-school opponents when they won convincingly in the Fenway Bowl against North Carolina. They also hung around with Syracuse last year, who was quarterbacked the country’s leading passer, Kyle McCord.
While more questions linger offensively for the Orange than last year, expecting the Huskies to defeat a power-school team on the road that was nationally ranked a season ago seems unrealistic. The Orange take a tight contest.
Result: Loss (1-1)
September 13: at Delaware Blue Hens
The growth of the Delaware football program has been extraordinary as they make the jump to the FBS level for 2025. This also marks Connecticut’s second consecutive road contest. Although, this seems like a game UConn should take care of.
The Blue Hens lack of offensive explosiveness will catch up to them, while Mel Brown and MJ Flowers will check that box for UConn.
It is good to note, though, that the history between the two programs goes back to the 1950’s, where they played nine of their 27 all-time head-to-head matchups. The Blue Hens have taken 20 of those 27 games, which included a 12-game winning streak. However, this game will be their first matchup of the 21st century.
Result: Win (2-1)
September 20: vs. Ball State Cardinals
Connecticut’s second home contest will mark its second-ever meeting with the Cardinals. Ball State won the first matchup 25-21 in their home stadium in 2022. Now traveling to Rentschler Field, and the Huskies should have the advantage.
The MAC’s Cardinals are coming off of a 3-9 season as they transition into a new regime under Mike Uremovich. And if Connecticut’s play against MAC schools is an indication of what to expect in this contest, the Huskies should roll. They beat Buffalo at home 47-3 last season.
Result: Win (3-1)
September 27: at Buffalo Bulls
These two teams were miles apart from each other in their meeting last year, where quarterbacks Nick Evers and Joe Fagnano cruised their way to a victory for UConn. The Huskies ran for over 250 yards on the ground, while the Bulls couldn’t muster 200 yards of total offense. Now, the Bulls have improved tremendously, and could make some noise. However, I still think that UConn will take care of business.
Result: Win (4-1)
October 4: vs. FIU Panthers
The Huskies should take care of business when FIU travels to UConn on Oct. 4. After a disappointing 2024, Florida International has moved on to head coach Willie Simmons, who looks to rebuild a struggling program. The Panthers haven’t made a bowl game since 2019, and come off of three consecutive 4-8 finishes. Until proven otherwise, FIU will struggle to compete for four quarters with Jim Mora and the Huskies.
Result: Win (5-1)
October 18: at Boston College Eagles
There is an argument that this contest is the toughest on the docket for UConn. Traveling to Alumni Stadium and coming out victorious is no easy task. The Eagles finished with a 6-1 record at home last year, the second best home record in the ACC to only Miami. Now into 2025, BC is looking to build off of its seven-win 2023 and 2024 campaigns and become a contender in the ACC in their second year under Bill O’Brien, the former head coach of the Houston Texans.
UConn will keep the game close, though will fall short in a tightly-played contest. The Huskies haven’t won a road game against an ACC opponent since 2017, when they defeated the Eagles 21-14.
Result: Loss (5-2)
October 25: at Rice Owls
This game against the Owls could very well be viewed as a trap game for Connecticut. They could be looking ahead to three consecutive home games that will give them an opportunity to cement themselves against high-level competition. Although, Rice’s program continues to trend in the wrong direction. They’re still searching for their first winning season since 2014. A new regime anchored by head coach Scott Abell hopes to flip the script, though the Huskies will be too overwhelming of an opponent.
Result: Win (6-2)
November 1: vs. UAB Blazers
Looking ahead to a meeting with ACC’s Duke Blue Devils, I have the Huskies suffering a shocking loss in their first of three consecutive home games to begin November. While UAB is coming off of disappointing campaigns, third-year head coach Trent Dilfer has completely overhauled the defensive system.
Dilfer hired Steve Russ as defensive coordinator, who won two Super Bowls as a player with the Denver Broncos in 1997 and 1998. He also added a plethora of front-seven pieces in the portal. If the hype isn’t a bluff, the Blazers defense could overachieve and cause havoc for the Huskies offense. I have UConn dropping a dud in Week 10.
Result: Loss (6-3)
November 8: vs. Duke Blue Devils
This will be the sellout at Rentschler field in 2025. The Blue Devils enter the season with votes to be a nationally ranked group, and for good reason.
Duke landed quarterback transfer Darian Mensah in the transfer portal with an $8 million NIL agreement, making him one of the highest paid players in college football. After a stout sophomore season with Tulane, Duke will live and breathe by its prolific signal caller.
For UConn’s defense entering year two with defensive coordinator Matt Brock, they roster a relatively new group. They’ve lost over 80-percent of its starting production from a year ago. Yet if scheme was the secret glue to their defensive success last season, than the Huskies will be in solid shape. How veteran transfer additions in the secondary and in the interior of the defensive line will fare will determine whether the success will be replicated. And, most likely the result of this game.
I think by the end of this season, the defense will be more cohesive, and in a position to thrive against Mensah and the Blue Devils high-flashing offense. UConn pulls off the upset.
Result: Win (7-3)
November 15: vs. Air Force Falcons
2024 was a rare down-year for the Air Force football program, where they went 5-7. They were coming off of five seasons of .500 play or better, which included two seasons as a nationally ranked squad. Yet, this is a program as a whole that has endured uncanny levels of consistency.
Since its inception in FBS football in 1957, they’ve had just five head coaches. This includes head coach Troy Calhoun, who enters his 19th year running the show with the Falcons. Losing seasons have been rare as a whole, and Air Force looks improved entering 2025. This is no ‘gimme’ for UConn to close out its home schedule.
With that said, I think the Huskies will pull through. The Falcons plan to start junior Josh Johnson, who has attempted just 14 passes at the collegiate level. While he’ll be more prepared by Week 12, his lack of experience compared to seven-year veteran Joe Fagnano on the other side could be the separator.
Result: Win (8-3)
November 22: at Florida Atlantic Owls
UConn wraps up its regular-season slate in warm weather, traveling to Boca Raton to face off with Florida Atlantic. Last year, these two teams met in Connecticut in Week 4, where the Huskies dominant 48-14 win set the stage for what was next. They lost only two games the remainder of the season after setting an FBS-program record in rushing yardage under the lights at Rentschler Field.
Since then, this Husky squad has cemented itself as a challenging opponent. Meanwhile, the Owls remain the laughing stock of FBS. It’s truly possible they finish with one of college football’s worst records.
While their quarterback play is improved with Western Kentucky transfer Caden Veltkamp running the show, this UConn defense will eat the Owls alive. UConn will end its season with an exclamation point on the road.
Result: Win (9-3)
UConn Football: Final Thoughts and Predictions on the 2025 Schedule
UConn’s Ceiling (11-1)
If the pieces fall into place, UConn could find itself nationally ranked. With three wins over ACC schools, the Huskies would be recognized on the AP Poll with an 11-1 record, which appears to be their best case scenario.
If the defense is cohesive early-on, than one quarterback on the offense could allow for more consistency. Last season, UConn lost one-score games to Duke, Wake Forest, and Syracuse, and Fagnano started in just one of those games. If the Huskies can find more offensive consistency, and remain a threat defensively, the sky is the limit. They won’t go undefeated, however, as they have too many 50-50 games on the schedule.
UConn’s Floor (6-6)
This would certainly be a step-back for a program that won nine games the season before. UConn should qualify for a bowl game given its skill-position playmakers, though that is about the only thing guaranteed if everyone stays healthy.
It’s possible that UConn loses all three ACC showings, while Buffalo and Air Force are each on the incline. If the defensive losses in the portal are too insurmountable to overcome, than the Huskies potential will be limited with Fagnano quarterbacking the offense.
Final Schedule Breakdown
This is not an easy 2025 football schedule for UConn, so these predictions aren’t set in stone. The Huskies face Buffalo, Air Force, UAB, and FAU, weaker FBS programs that appear improved for this coming season. They also play three games against ACC opponents who could garner national headlines if the chips fall accordingly.
This also isn’t a schedule where an overachieving season could find UConn in the College Football Playoff. That would have to come if they join a larger conference; whether that’s moving the entire athletic department or in a football-only agreement.
For now, they have the luxury (and misfortune) of playing against some of college football’s weakest opponents. This schedule sets UConn up for maybe a prestigious bowl, but probably not a national ranking.
If UConn does run the table, however, matchups against higher-profile opponents will come, where the Huskies will have their chances to reignite its football program.
