UConn vs. FIU 2025 Preview: Keys, Players and Predictions

FIU Football, FIU Panthers, UConn Football, UConn Huskies, The League Winners

Entering Week 6, the FIU Panthers are set to travel north to face off against the UConn Huskies in their final non-conference matchup of the 2025 season. The Huskies have been able to light up the scoreboard in 2025, having one of the better passing attacks in the country through their first five games. Meanwhile, the Panthers have boasted a strong rushing attack through four games. With that in mind, let’s dive into this 2025 preview with UConn vs. FIU.

UConn Huskies vs. FIU Panthers: Game History

The Huskies and Panthers have only faced off twice on the gridiron, and both games have come in very recent history.

In 2022, the Huskies traveled to Miami and defeated the Panthers by a score of 33-12. Victor Rosa had two touchdowns for UConn, while Justin Joly led the team with 62 receiving yards. For FIU, Dean Patterson had 50 yards receiving, Rivaldo Fairweather had 38 yards receiving, and Demetrius Hill had eight total tackles.

In 2023, FIU got its payback on the road, defeating the Huskies by a score of 24-17. Keyone Jenkins dealt in the game, completing 15 of his 24 attempts for 284 yards and two touchdowns. Devontae Houston led the charge for the Huskies, rushing for 129 yards while also recording a 37-yard receiving touchdown.

UConn vs. FIU 2025 Preview: Keys to the Game

Key Players for FIU

Wide receiver Alex Perry arguably has broken out over the past two weeks. After posting his first touchdown of the season against FAU, he notched 84 yards and his second touchdown against the Delaware Blue Hens. Perry has great route running, can make big things happen after the catch, and is a weapon in contested catch situations. He also has shown some impressive burst in his routes down the field, adding to his value as a pass-catcher.

In this game against UConn, Perry needs to continue his emergence as the Panthers’ leading wideout. He needs to take advantage of Huskies’ limited secondary, while also expanding on his rapport with quarterback Keyone Jenkins. In his media availability, the wideout said that the chemistry with the quarterback is, “going to build more and more throughout the season.” He also expects the connection to, “really flourish how it’s supposed to” in the next couple of games. If the connection clicks against UConn, the Panthers will be in a great spot to win.

Meanwhile, offensive lineman Daniel Michel needs to be at his best against the UConn defensive line. While not a dominant unit, the Huskies are capable of sending heat with linebackers like Bryun Parham and Tyquan King. Michel has allowed some pressures, but is also capable of stifling the pass rush. If FIU gets a great performance out of the offensive tackle, they will be in a great spot to win the game.

On defense, Brian Blades II and Kenton Simmons are my two key players.

Blades will be tasked with standout UConn wideout Skyler Bell, one of the best receivers in college football. Recording 508 yards and four touchdowns in four games, Bell is arguably the biggest challenge Blades has faced all year. If he shows a clean bill of health and is able to shut down the talented UConn wideout, Blades could single-handedly shift the game in the direction of the Panthers.

Simmons, just like Blades, needs to be at his best for the team to have a great game. Slotting in as the second leading pass rusher for the Panthers, Simmons has notched eight pressures and a sack through four games. He has shown power and speed throughout the year, but has been slightly inconsistent.

Against the Huskies, Simmons needs to be a force. He needs to get into the backfield consistently, create problems for the opposing offense, and throw the passing game off of its rhythm. Along with the rest of the defensive line, Simmons’s production will be vital against the Huskies.

Key Players for UConn

Wide receiver Skyler Bell is a game-wrecker, no matter who the opponent is. He gets open deep down the field, makes big-time catches, and is a constant chain mover. Bell will likely draw the matchup of Brian Blades II, who is one of the more talented and underrated cornerbacks in the country. The UConn wideout will have to win this matchup consistently to give the Huskies a great chance to win.

On defense, linebacker Tyquan King needs to continue to play well. Producing against both the run and passing game, King has already amassed 20 tackles, three sacks, and 11 defensive stops in 2025. Against an FIU team that will look to run the ball and get its passing game rolling, King will have a ton on his plate. If he continues to produce at a high level, the Huskies will be in a great spot on Saturday afternoon.

Keys to Victory

FIU Keys to Victory

Get Jenkins Comfortable

To win this football game, the Panthers need to get their standout quarterback comfortable ripping the ball all over the field. FIU needs to design quick-hitters and short passes early in the game, allowing Jenkins to throw them with confidence. Combined with getting the run game rolling, this should allow Jenkins to hit some big passes down the field to Alex Perry and the other wideouts. FIU needs Jenkins at his best if they want to win.

Lock-Down Coverage

The Panthers need to limit the high-octane passing attack of the Huskies. With Brian Blades II likely back in action, FIU has the talent and ability to do just that. This should be one of the better battles of the day, and it’ll be interesting to see how it plays out.

Maximum Discipline

FIU cannot be loose with the penalties and turnovers against this UConn team. If they are, they will be in a hole almsot immediately. A clean football game is a must here, and nothing short of that is acceptable.

UConn Keys to Victory

Get Cam Edwards Rolling

The standout running back for the Huskies is just as vital to the team’s success as their passing attack. With FIU likely keying in on the pass, establishing Edwards early will be vital for UConn. If he finds success, things could open up much more for the Huskies deep down the field.

Protect the Quarterback

The Huskies are going to let it rip all night, and they will need their offensive line to protect quarterback Joe Fagnano. FIU has been hit or miss with its pass rush, but they have the talent to pressure quarterbacks with unique blitzes. UConn’s ability to protect the quarterback will likely determine if they win or lose this game.

Pressure Jenkins

UConn has to pressure Keyone Jenkins in this game. If they can, the Huskies can throw the quarterback off his spot and potentially slow down the entire FIU offense. If they cannot, it will be a long day for UConn, as Jenkins could be in store for a great game.
