After years of inconsistent offensive line play, the USF Bulls entered 2023 looking for experience and endurance up front. USF found both in Derek Bowman, a graduate transfer from Houston who brought size, strength, and stability to the right side of the line. With just one season as a Bull under his belt, he not only solidified himself as a starter but also became an asset for one of USF’s most productive ground attacks. Now entering his third season with the team, Bowman is taking the reins once again as he wraps up a very memorable college career.

USF Football: Who is Derek Bowman?

The Magnolia, Texas native attended Magnolia High School, where he earned All-District honors and was rated a three-star recruit by both 247Sports and Rivals. Widely regarded as one of the top offensive guards in Texas, 247 Sports ranked him No. 21 nationally at his position and No.61 overall prospect. Bowman was also named District 8-5A Offensive Lineman of the Year as a senior.

He initially committed to Houston over offers from several schools, including Arizona, Memphis, East Carolina, and Minnesota.

College Career History

Bowman spent his first four years at Houston, gradually developing within their program and seeing the field periodically. After redshirting his freshman year, he took the field for one game, followed by another single-game appearance the next season. Bowman’s breakout year with the Cougars came in 2022, when he played in 13 games, helping them to an 8-5 record and a bowl victory.

In the spring of 2023, he entered the transfer portal in search of a new opportunity – and landed at USF.

Bowman made his South Florida debut that fall, starting 10 games at right tackle. He played in 11 overall, quickly earning a reputation as one of the most dependable linemen on the roster. However, it wasn’t until 2024 when he truly solidified himself in the trenches.

He started all 13 games at right tackle – the only USF lineman to do so – and helped lead a dominant rushing attack that ranked fourth in the AAC and 28th nationally. Behind Bowman and the front five, the Bulls totaled 2,343 rushing yards and 34 rushing touchdowns, the second-most in program history. His reliability also helped USF to its second straight bowl win.

Fun fact: Bowman made his collegiate debut in 2020, playing on special teams in a matchup against USF.

Setting the Standard in the Trenches

Bowman’s not flashy, but he’s as consistent as they come. His commitment to maintaining his health, working like a pro, and playing solid football every week made him one of the most dependable figures on the roster. He has remained a constant for the Bulls’ offensive line – holding down the right edge and supplying the type of veteran leadership that makes offensive lines click.

His attention to detail is consistently recognized in both film sessions and practices. Derek also continues to leave a growing legacy, mentoring younger lineman and leaving a lasting impact within the program.

2025 Outlook

As Bowman begins his final year of college football, he’ll once again be a cornerstone on the offensive line – both in pass protection and in the run game. His veteran experience, specifically in AAC competition, gives USF an edge in critical downs and red zone situations. Expect him to continue working alongside new faces up front, mentoring his teammates, and playing with power on the line.

With 28 career starts in the books, Bowman will be counted on to lead a group that’s striving to be even more dominant than last season. His return ensures that the Bulls maintain a solid foundation, as well as a proven leader and elite tone-setter up front.

In a conference where steady line play is crucial, Derek Bowman may just be one of USF’s most valuable assets in 2025.
