De’Shawn Rucker has been making waves with the USF Bulls football team lately, and for good reason. The defensive back joined the Bulls in the spring of 2024 and has been on the rise within USF’s defense ever since. The SEC transfer from Tennessee is a fierce competitor with elite speed and a proven ability to make an impact. Driven to prove himself, De’Shawn is ready to take the field by storm once again and is striving for what could just be his best season yet.

USF Football: Who is De’Shawn Rucker?

A Tallahassee, Florida native, De’Shawn Rucker was a standout multi-sport athlete at Godby High School. Rucker excelled not only on the football field, but also in track and basketball. Known for his speed and versatility, Rucker played every position in the secondary and was ranked among the top-55 prospects in Florida and a three-star recruit.

An achiever on the basketball court and a speedster on the track, the entirety of Rucker’s talent and athleticism was undeniable. In his breakout high school season, he recorded three interceptions-including one returned 56 yards in a single game.

After high school, Rucker initially took his talents to Tennessee. That’s where he earned his reputation as a hard-hitting defensive back and special teams asset.

Fun fact: De’Shawn and fellow Bulls defensive back Kajuan Banks met in elementary school and played all three sports together in high school. They originally committed to different programs before both entered the transfer portal-ultimately reuniting at USF.

Path to the Bulls

Throughout three seasons in Knoxville, Rucker took the field for 24 games, making two starts and contributing primarily on special teams. During his time as a Volunteer, he recorded 14 tackles, including a blocked punt and a pass breakup in 2022.

Due to injury, Rucker was limited during the 2023 season and decided to enter the transfer portal in search of a fresh start. He found his next opportunity in Tampa.

During his 2024 debut with the Bulls, Rucker started 11 games and posted career-best stats. He tallied 42 total tackles, 36 solo, 2.0 tackles for loss, seven quarterback hurries, and a forced fumble.

Rucker’s breakout performance was a career-high 10 solo tackles in Week 2 against Alabama. He also recorded multiple pass breakups in critical conference matchups against Memphis and Rice.

A Game-Changer in the Secondary

Known for his physical coverage style and ability to make plays downhill, Rucker has become a tone-setter for the Bulls’ defense. His ability to stick with receivers, deliver clean hits, and disrupt routes has made him a continuous dependable presence on the outside.

As he grows to become more of a vocal leader, Rucker’s play continues to speak volumes in itself. Coaches consistently praise his preparation and resilience-particularly his ability to bounce back from setbacks stronger than before.

Whether in zone coverage or lined up against a wideout, Rucker is confident in his ability to hold down the second-string and lock things down.

De’Shawn Rucker’s 2025 Outlook

With experience in both SEC and American Conference competition, De’Shawn Rucker is a cornerstone of the USF defensive unit, bringing both experience and an established presence to the secondary.

His speed and physicality make him a strong option to contribute as a blitzer, while offering solid run support. Expect him to anchor the cornerback room and frequently match up against some of the best in the conference.

Maintaining his health will be vital, but there’s little doubt that Rucker can emerge as one of the top cornerbacks in the American this season. Surrounded by fellow talent, his ability to lead will be crucial-and his presence will certainly be felt.

With the 2025 season the horizon, Rucker continues to earn well deserved preseason recognition. He was named First Team Preseason All-AAC by both Athlon Sports and Phil Steele. Most recently, De’Shawn has earned a spot on the 2025 Paycom Jim Thorpe Award Watchlist, which honors the top defensive back in the country. He also proudly represented USF at this year’s American Conference Kickoff, alongside center Cole Best and head coach Alex Golesh.

Rucker has always had the tools. Now, he finally has the stage. All eyes are on him, and this just may be his year to become a household name.
