USF vs. Boise State 2025: Keys to the Game and Predictions

USF Football, USF Bulls, The League Winners

College football in Tampa is officially back for the South Florida Bulls! This Thursday on August 28, it’s the USF vs. the Boise State Broncos, where predictions and thoughts on this 2025 Week 1 matchup are all over the place.

After showing flashes of promise throughout the 2024 season, USF enters 2025 with higher expectations, a revamped roster, and a shot to prove they belong on the national stage. With major implications for the Bulls, this nationally televised matchup gives this year’s roster a big opportunity to make a statement.

However, this won’t be an easy task by any means. The Broncos are coming off a 12-2 record, ranked No. 1 in the Mountain West, were undefeated in conference play, and are currently the No. 25 team in the nation. Statistically, USF may be the underdog. However, there’s still a lot to consider heading into this high-stakes midweek showdown at Raymond James Stadium.

USF Bulls vs. Boise State Broncos: History and Excerpts

This Week 1 clash will mark the first-ever meeting between South Florida and Boise State, and it comes with plenty of intrigue. Boise enters the season fresh off a Mountain West Conference Championship. That included their first-ever appearance in the College Football Playoff, where they suffered a loss to Penn State in the Fiesta Bowl.

But the Broncos won’t return to the field with all the same firepower. They lost arguably their greatest weapon, running back Ashton Jeanty to the NFL draft. Along with Jeanty, the team lost wide receiver Cameron Camper and pass rusher Ahmed Hassanein to this year’s NFL draft. Those gaps may slightly open the door for USF, who is seeking this win at home to kick off their 2025 season on a high note.

Meanwhile, The Bulls themselves have undergone a transformation. There are new faces in the backfield, changes on defense, and an opportunity for USF to showcase their next wave of talent-live on ESPN.

USF vs. Boise State 2025: Keys to the Game and Predictions

Key Players for South Florida

Quarterback Byrum Brown will return as the leader of this offense, making his comeback after suffering a leg injury last season. Brown threw for over 3200 yards during his breakout 2023 campaign and has been on the rise with the Bulls ever since. Now, fully healthy, he looks to take that next step while continuing to lead the Bulls with confidence and command.

He’ll be supported by wide receiver Keshaun Singleton. Singleton has shown to be a reliable deep threat with the speed and agility to breakthrough coverage across the field. Offensive lineman Connor McLaughlin will be another key piece at right tackle, assisting to anchor the Bulls’ front line.

On defense, linebacker Mac Harris will continuously work to find his way through to Broncos quarterback Maddux Madsen. Meanwhile, cornerback De’Shawn Rucker takes on the challenge of handling the Broncos’ top wideouts downfield. If Boise starts to be relentless on the pass game, nickelback Jarvis Lee may become a crucial piece in tightening the pass defense.

Key Players for Boise State

Quarterback Maddux Madsen returns to Boise State after a breakout 2024 campaign where he threw for over 3000 yards and led the Broncos to a No. 21 national ranking. He’s efficient and poised, with the ability to dissect defenses and execute when given the time and opportunity.

Madsen will primarily rely on his route-runners including wide receiver Latrell Caples. Caples has proven to be a dependable and speedy target. Also relied upon would be tight end Matt Lauter, who adds size and reliability over the middle.

Despite the offseason losses to the NFL, Boise State’s defensive unit remains strong and intact. Safety Ty Benefield, linebacker Marco Notarainni, and cornerback A’Marion McCoy headline a group tasked with slowing down USF’s fast-paced offense, stopping the run, and preventing a productive night from Byrum Brown.

Keys for USF to Win in Week 1

USF will need to win the turnover battle in order to have a real shot at succeeding in this matchup. More specifically, ball security in the fourth quarter will be critical. If the Bulls can force a few takeaways while protecting the ball, they can flip momentum and gain additional drives with favorable field position.

South Florida’s defense must focus on containing quarterback Maddux Madsen. Whether it’s by clogging the middle or disrupting routes, preventing Madsen from finding a rhythm will be vital to slowing down Boise State’s offense.

With the Thursday night lights on at Raymond James Stadium, the energy and excitement will definitely be what USF needs to to feed off of. The Bulls must ride the momentum of their home crowd, execute their offensive tempo, and secure their defense both in the middle and along the outside. A quick start and aggressive play could be the key to shaking up the Broncos and keeping them for taking control in unfamiliar territory.
