USF vs. Florida 2025: Keys to the Game and Predictions

USF Football, USF Bulls, The League Winners

Coming off an electric Week 1 victory, the South Florida Bulls are gearing up for their next challenge in Week 2. That’s because it’s a USF vs. Florida showdown to take on the Gators in Gainesville in 2025.

Without a doubt, USF has caught the eyes of many throughout the nation with their show-stopping performance against Boise State in Week 1. However, both teams enter Week 2 with very different mindsets.

The Bulls are riding high off their win, while the Gators had a 55-0 shutout over Long Island University in their season opener. But USF is not LIU, and this matchup could pose significant challenges for both teams.

USF Bulls vs. Florida Gators: Matchup History

This marks the fourth meeting between the Bulls and the Gators, with USF currently 0-3 in the series. While it’s not the first time these two programs have met, it may be the most meaningful.

Florida isn’t necessarily one of USF’s traditional rivals, but rather fierce neighboring competition. These two teams first met in 2010, and didn’t face each other again until 2021, where they would battle it out two years in a row. USF’s most recent trip to Gainesville ended with just a 3-point loss, despite finishing 1-11 on the season. Fast forward to 2025, and this year’s Bulls are under a new regime, more experienced, battle-tested, and hungry.

Meanwhile, Florida is navigating a pivotal season under pressure, with upcoming matchups against the likes of LSU, Texas, and Georgia. On paper (and according to the spread), this week’s game seems like it should be a layup. However, USF’s win against Boise State may show that this game could be closer than people think.

Still, UF remains the favorite entering the game, backed by a home crowd and a reputation as an SEC powerhouse. As daunting as this game may seem, a classic Florida vs. USF game is a fan-favorite, and the 2025 Bulls are far more equipped to shake things up in The Swamp.

USF vs. Florida 2025: Keys to the Game and Predictions

Key Players for South Florida

At the center of it all is quarterback Byrum Brown, who made his much-awaited comeback, showcasing all of his abilities in Week 1. His two go-to guys are Chas Nimrod and Keshaun Singleton. Nimord has been dynamic across all areas of the field, while Singleton has hauled in several tough completions on difficult routes downfield.

Kicker Nico Gramatica is also a weapon a special teams. He’s especially effective in cases where USF finds itself landing just on the outskirts of adequate field goal range. Gramatica gives them a pretty good shot at putting points on the board.

On defense, linebacker Jhalyn Shuler was the standout of the Boise State game and relentless on the field. He posted career-high stats while earning praise and honors throughout this week for his efforts.

Right next to Shuler is fellow linebacker Mac Harris. Harris can anchor the defense and attack the quarterback, impacting the play and changing the game at any moment. In the secondary, cornerback Jonas Duclona continues to make his presence felt. His ability to execute well on press-man coverage will be key to slowing down Florida’s passing attack.

Key Players for Florida

Phenom quarterback DJ Lagway headlines the Gators’ offense. He’s already flashed elite potential, and his top weapon, wide receiver Vernell Brown, has been tremendous. Brown made several highlight reel plays in last week’s win over LIU. Meanwhile, running back Jadan Baugh also appears to be dangerous, already logging 104 rushing yards on the season.

Aiming to halt a quick USF offense will be linebackers Myles Graham and Jaden Robinson, as well as EDGE Kamran James. Deep in the secondary will be defensive back Devin Moore, who will look to prevent pivotal downhill attacks from USF’s wide receiver core.

With dual-threat capabilities, the Gators will aim to force turnovers wherever due and not only control the pace of the game, but also remain in control of the football.

Keys for USF to Win in Week 2

Start strong, maintain momentum

The Bulls will need to strike first and do it fast. Establishing their ground and capitalizing on steady momentum will ensure they have a solid foundation to build off of when playing in this very tough road environment.

Stay with your man

This Florida offense will pose significant challenges for USF’s defense. In order to contain their attack, the Bulls unit will need to stop the run quickly and prevent the wideouts from flying downhill successfully. They will need to execute just as well as they did last week-if not better.

Next-play mentality

It may sound cliché, but for the Bulls to be successful, they will need to put their absolute best out on that field. In cases where the Gators may take off, USF will need to remain focused and resilient. The team can’t become rattled. They’ll need to quickly learn from each play and adapt their execution. This team has the talent to hang with Florida, but only if they stay sharp throughout all phases of the game.
