Who is Grant Page?

Grant Page was a 3⭐️ in the composites. He attended Fairview High in Colorado and was the third ranked player in the state of Colorado. During his time at Fairview High, Page was a two sport athlete, playing Varsity Guard in Basketball. Page battled injuries his Junior and Senior years in high school and played 24 career games where he compiled 173 receptions for 2,538 yards and 26 touchdowns. Page initially committed to Colorado, but entered the portal after their Spring Game in 2023.

There, it was reported that the Colorado offense was focused on showcasing only two wide receivers. There were also rumblings that the defense was told to not showcase any schemes in order to have the Colorado offense look good, as the game was being broadcasted on ESPN.

Page was part of Colorado’s mass exodus, and would transfer to Utah State on July 31 in 2023. Due to the late arrival, Page was playing catchup during fall camp and did not see any real action for the Aggies. Grant Page is now a redshirt Sophomore.

Positional Outlook

The Aggies return a strong wide receiving duo in Jalen Royals and Micah Davis. The mystery is who will be operating out of the slot. Micah Davis operated the majority of the time out of the slot in the first five games of the season. 44 out of his 55 snaps out of the slot took place in those five games. After that, Davis operated outside and blossomed as a boundary receiver.

If the Aggies keep Davis at one of the boundary positions, the question is who operates out of the slot. Then, it becomes a situation where it will be talent versus fit. Grant Page is more of a boundary receiver, but the issue is the entire receiving room’s height. There are two receivers who fit the conventional slot build. Those two players are Kahanu Davis and Kyrese Rowan.

Both Davis and Rowan saw very limited snaps. Grant Page should carve out a role with this offense, but him being a boundary receiver makes the most sense, with Davis moving back into the slot. This is the best option for the Aggies offense. It gives three different profiles for Utah State’s offense and stresses the defense. With Jalen Royals being the 6-foot alpha, Davis slots in as a twitchy short area slot receiver in 11 personnel sets and in two wide sets will be the boundary receiver. Page can be the boundary receiver in 11 personnel sets.

I don’t view Page being on the bench this past season as a negative. He came into the program late and had to learn a new playbook. A full offseason and being able to get into spring camp can allow Page to make huge strides and carve out a role for the Aggies.

Strengths

Grant Page showed a good level of production back in high school and should have good athletic traits as he lettered in two sports. Typically, an athlete who plays competitive football and basketball will have athletic measurables that will make them a better overall player.

Page brings good athletic measurables being 6 foot 3 inches. He is able to high point the ball and has strong hands. Page has enough lateral agility that should translate in the Mountain West. He shows good ball tracking skills and should fit in this spread offense. He has the size and athletic traits to stand out in this receiving room and brings a different dimension to this room.

Areas of Improvement & Concern

Grant Page has not seen any real live reps in over a year, with two injury plagued seasons in high school. There are concerns that Page won’t be able to climb the depth chart and will only be a rotational piece. While Page was the third ranked prospect in Colorado, his initial commitment to Colorado was that of a program in turmoil. This wasn’t a Coach Prime recruit, and Page saw the writing on the wall after the spring game and transferred out.

Another concern is where Page fits within Utah State’s program. Micah Davis was a much better boundary receiver last year and there is a possibility that the coaching staff will want to keep him outside full time and not into the slot. Page being a big slot option, on paper, looks really good. But in practicality, he does not have much experience operating inside. While he would have the length in the slot, he could find slot corners to be too quick for him to operate how the Aggies want the slot position to be played.

Pathway to Success

The Utah State Aggies need a third receiver to step up for them. While Colby Bowman showed to be effective in limited opportunities last year, what you see with him is what you get. Bowman brings good experience to the room and gives a good floor. He doesn’t provide the ceiling play that you want. That’s where Grant Page comes in.

Page brings tremendous upside to the program. He brings a unique set of size and athletic skill to the position. The Mountain West corners are not lengthy nor are they physical. Adding Page to the mix would cause chaos for defenses. They would have to contend with Jalen Royals and his speed and field stretching abilities. They would also have to account for Micah Davis in the slot to operate the short to intermediate routes. Finally, they would have to worry about the length that Page would bring to the table.

The best case scenario for the Aggies is that Page showcases his abilities in the Spring to earn the outside boundary position in 11 personnel and force defenses in a bind with the versatility the starting three receivers would bring. If Page is able to make strides in the Fall and earn a role, it would create much needed stability in the room; as Colby Bowman can be used as a rotational depth piece instead of having to be elevated as a starting option.

2024 Outlook

The third WR option for the Aggies will come in without much pressure. All eyes will be on Jalen Royals and to a lesser extent, Micah Davis. The third spot will likely receive the least amount of attention due to defenses needing to be aware of the top two. It would make sense for the Aggies to turn that into an opportunity to exploit defenses and putting out Page would do that.

Grant Page is an athletic and taller receiver who could complement the top two returning receivers. I like to think of the WR room as a basketball team, fielding different body types to make the defense have to defend every inch on the playing field and create mismatches. The athleticism that Page offers over the rest of the room would put enormous stress on opposing defenses. Page just needs to showcase what we’ve seen on his High School tape into Spring practices and the Spring game.
