Film Notes and Highlights
Andru Phillips was used in a variety of ways at Kentucky. He played the boundary, the slot in Nickel, and was put in the box on occasion. Phillips normally has a great understanding of his responsibilities in zone coverage. In man coverage, he seems to prefer giving up inside leverage to stop potential big boundary plays. He has a tendency to be beaten on curl routes on the boundary due to the large cushion he allows. At times, he struggles to get turned around to the ball and that can lead to DPI. He also will struggle against twitchy athletes, lacking the hip fluidity to change direction on a dime.
Phillips is an aggressive corner, often opting to take on ball carriers in one-on-one situations and performs relatively well given his size. He likes to play aggressive in press, but at times this can lead to whiffs at the LOS. His effort in the run game is hit or miss, but he plays up to his opponents, which is nice to see. I believe Phillips is a Day 3 prospect who will do well in a Cover-3 oriented scheme, or could potentially make the switch to free safety. – Thomas Christopher
