“Days of the Offseason” Day 4: Start-up Strategies Part 1 of 3

As dynasty start-ups become more and more popular, fantasy football managers should beware not to over value players.

Dynasty start-ups can be stressful, especially ones with the incoming rookies involved. Make sure you address value instead of “holes” while drafting your dynasty team.

There’s three different strategies I use when drafting for a start-up, and this article will addres the first portion of my strategy. Having a plan and process will usually lead to positive results early on if done correctly. It also allows you to build insane value throughout the course of your league’s start-up draft, giving you a significant advantage at the beginning of your fantasy football league; compared to managers who are left scrambling.

Fantasy football managers let value slip constantly. To gain the most value with this strategy, it’s almost smarter to trade out of the 1st and even 2nd-round entirely. Managers will reach on targets they like early in the draft, allowing great value to fall in the later rounds. You can’t always win a draft in your first round, but you can definitely lose it if you choose incorrectly.

Fantasy football managers also often undervalue future picks. 2022 1st and 2023 1st-round selections are being sold criminally low in start-up leagues and should be looked at acquiring through potential trades. Adding draft equity for future drafts is important. It establishes value that will only rise throughout the year, while being able to be used as trade pieces closer to their respective draft.

This isn’t necessarily a set structure strategy, and this won’t always guarantee that you will win in your fantasy football league. But, maintaining value through the craziness of a start-up and having equity throughout the first couple of years is very important in establishing a dynasty.

There is more structure strategies, that’ll be coming within the next few days as we start to dive in deeper. As always, make sure you’re adding value over the course of the first 2 years, not just the start-up. Don’t forget that while future selections are years away, they can hold incredible value going forward.

Start-ups are just that, the draft. Once it’s over, most people tend not to care about where a player was taken. Perceived values will change all day, everyday, but sturdy value that is guaranteed to be there is value I won’t pass up.
