Hello and welcome in everyone. I know you missed me. I would be remiss if I didn’t shout out to Elijah Southwick, who covered this series while my wife gave birth to our second daughter. As my wife and I added to our roster, let’s look at some guys you can drop to your waivers with my Roster Cloggers After Week 3.
Last week, Elijah hit on a few guys I’m indifferent about in Chigoziem Okonkwo, Michael Gallup, Antonio Gibson, and an honorable mention to Courtland Sutton. Sutton hit this week for 19.1 fantasy points, Gallup hit for 15.2, while the other guys had less than 4 points each. 50% isn’t bad.
As we get into the roster cloggers for the week, remember each of this week’s players is rostered in at least 35% of leagues on either ESPN or Sleeper‘s fantasy football platforms. Without further ado, let’s dive in!
Darnell Mooney, WR — Chicago Bears
Darnell Mooney was solid in week one, posting four catches for 53 yards and a touchdown. He showed much promise as a second or third option in the Chicago Bears offense before leaving week two with a knee injury. However, this Chicago Offense has grown stagnant in the last two weeks. It seems Justin Fields has regressed as the season has progressed. Chicago has become one of the worst passing offenses in the league with Fields only throwing for 99 yards in week three, despite being behind big the entire game. This means Mooney would have to be highly efficient if he did start to see more work. He’s currently on 52.2% of ESPN rosters despite only being targeted once in the previous two games. After back-to-back weeks of goose eggs, I think it’s safe to put him on the waiver wire now.
Dalton Schultz, TE — Houston Texans
This one hurts because I had Dalton Schultz ranked higher than consensus in the offseason. I thought the Texans would be bad, making this a higher-volume passing offense due to the consistently negative game script. Schultz should have been a significant beneficiary of this. It turns out I was right for the wrong reasons, and he isn’t the beneficiary I thought he would be. CJ Stroud has looked great, and game scripts favor the passing game. However, Stroud seems more in tune with his WRs than his TE. Schultz has provided nothing more than replacement-level production so far this season. If you’re starting him and looking for a sign to stream elsewhere, this is it.
Brandin Cooks, WR – Dallas Cowboys
Last week, my colleague Elijah Southwick highlighted Michael Gallup as a Roster Clogger. This week, I’m taking another Dallas starting WR, Brandin Cooks. Only one of Cooks and Gallup might be fairly decent in your lineups on a week-to-week basis. The problem lies in the fact that we don’t know who the actual number two is. You’ll never know which one of these guys is going to have a solid game. Therefore, I don’t want to roster either one of them. Cooks has yet to put up more than five fantasy points thus far this season. He’s deadweight at this point. Go pick up an RB on the wire instead. If a starter gets injured, then he will provide more value to your lineups than Cooks.
HONORABLE MENTION: Justin Fields, QB – Chicago Bears
Fields has looked atrocious so far this year. We were expecting solid progress as a passer this season after the addition of DJ Moore. However, Justin Fields seems lost on the field. He’s having trouble getting through his progressions and reading defenses. Despite having some decent matchups thus far, after throwing for only 99 yards on 22 attempts in week three, he sits as the QB17 at the time I’m writing this. He still has the same rushing upside as last year and can turn it on any week. I wouldn’t drop him yet, but he’s officially on my watchlist.
