The 2027 NFL draft class features no shortage of talented passers, but few are as intriguing to evaluate as Notre Dame’s CJ Carr.
2027 NFL Draft Scouting Spotlight: CJ Carr
Carr entered college as one of the nation’s premier quarterback recruits, bringing with him an impressive football pedigree and a reputation as one of the more polished passers in his class. His game has always been rooted in anticipation, timing, processing, and accuracy. Those traits often take the longest to fully evaluate, but they also tend to translate best to the NFL. Carr’s projection isn’t built solely on what he has already accomplished. Instead, it’s built on a collection of flashes that suggest his best football is still ahead of him.
After studying Carr’s film, I came away impressed by how advanced his overall quarterback play already is for a one-year starter. He demonstrated an understanding of how to use ball placement to maximize leverage, throw with anticipation, work through progressions, and operate concepts that project well to the next level. His mental approach to the position is noticeably ahead of where most first-year starting quarterbacks typically are. More importantly, many of those traits already appear in situations that closely resemble what he will be asked to execute on Sundays.
At the same time, Carr remains an unfinished evaluation. There are still moments where his inexperience becomes apparent, but they are often outweighed by flashes of NFL-caliber quarterback play. The flashes are extremely encouraging, but the next step is proving those flashes can become the standard over an entire season.
With that said, Carr is still a developing player. That combination creates one of the higher ceilings, but also a promising floor among the quarterbacks in this class.
Carr doesn’t need to discover NFL traits. He needs to prove he can consistently access the ones he already possesses.

Encouraging Traits
Pocket Poise
CJ Carr’s pocket poise is one of the most fascinating parts of his evaluation because the flashes are already outstanding.
There are snaps where he calmly navigates interior pressure, keeps his eyes downfield, subtly works within the pocket, and delivers quality throws despite defenders collapsing around him. Once of his most memorable moments actually came early in the season against Miami edge rusher Rueben Bain Jr. This rep, as many as any other, offered an excellent example of the composure and feel he is capable of displaying.
The consistency, however, is still developing. There are moments where Carr will abandon clean pockets, react prematurely to perceived pressure, or get caught guessing rather than feeling the pocket. Those moments are expected for a quarterback with limited starting experience, but the flashes provide legitimate optimism for where his pocket feel is trending.
Pocket Mobility
Carr complements his pocket poise with above-average movement skills inside the pocket.
Carr isn’t the same caliber of mover as quarterbacks such as Arch Manning or LaNorris Sellers. However, he consistently demonstrates the ability to slide, climb, reset his platform, and create additional throwing opportunities without immediately resorting to scrambling.
More importantly, Carr remains committed to throwing the football even after extending plays. When he climbs pockets his general instinct is to run the line of scrimmage and keep his eyes downfield rather than committing to his transition as a runner. This is a perfect example of his mobility serves as a complement to his passing ability rather than becoming the foundation of his game.
Mental Processing
Perhaps the most impressive aspect of Carr’s evaluation is how advanced his mental processing already appears for a quarterback with only one full season as a starter. The game rarely looks too fast for him. He consistently works through progressions, shows the ability to throw with anticipation, and displays an encouraging understanding of leverage that allows him to attack defenses before receivers fully uncover.
Carr is willing to challenge NFL throwing windows, particularly on back-shoulder throws, layered concepts, and in the red zone while also demonstrating the confidence to work backside progressions. He flashes the ability to execute NFL route concepts, identify coverage structure, and make timing-based throws that require conviction well before the receiver breaks.
On tape, Carr also appears to have more command at the line of scrimmage that first year starters are typically afforded. I have seen him set protections, check plays at the line of scrimmage, and identify coverage weaknesses pre-snap using non-verbal hand denatures to adjust route concepts.
Notre Dame’s surrounding talent certainly provided support, but regardless, the mental sharpness shown by Carr during just his first season as a starter cannot be overstated.
Arm Talent
Carr possesses above-average arm talent that provides access to every area of the field. He generates enough velocity to comfortably challenge tight throwing windows while also demonstrating the touch necessary to layer throws over defenders and drop vertical passes into favorable locations.
Perhaps most encouraging is his ability to generate velocity from compromised platforms. Even when off-platform, Carr consistently flashes enough natural arm talent to maintain both pace and placement without requiring a perfectly balanced throwing base.
He may not possess overwhelming elite arm strength, but he has more than enough arm to execute an NFL offense.
Accuracy
Carr is an accurate passer who consistently delivers catchable footballs to every level of the field. Whether attacking underneath, driving intermediate throws, or pushing the ball vertically, he routinely puts the football where his receivers have an opportunity to finish the play. His accuracy remains steady both from clean platforms and while throwing outside of structure, allowing him to maintain efficiency even when the pocket begins to deteriorate.
While there are occasional unexplained misses scattered throughout his tape, they are the exception rather than the rule. Overall, Carr demonstrates the level of accuracy expected from an NFL starting quarterback and has established himself as one of the more consistently accurate passers in the 2027 class.
Ball Placement
Accuracy is putting footballs in locations receivers can make a play. Ball placement is putting it in locations where only their receiver can make a play on the ball. This is where Carr truly stands out.
He consistently places the football in locations that maximize his receiver’s opportunity to create additional yardage while minimizing opportunities for defenders to make plays on the ball. Carr routinely leads receivers in stride, layers throws over underneath defenders, and displays impressive touch on vertical concepts. He also demonstrates excellent placement on back-shoulder throws and jump-ball opportunities, allowing his receivers to use leverage and body positioning to finish contested catches.
Carr’s understanding of leverage consistently shows up through his placement. Rather than simply completing passes, he frequently throws receivers open and positions the football where only his intended target has a realistic opportunity to make the play. That level of placement is one of the more translatable aspects of his game. This is where Carr wins with the best of them.
Rushing Ability
Although Carr is clearly a pass-first quarterback, he possesses enough athleticism to punish defenses that fail to account for him as a runner.
He is capable of extending drives by taking available rushing lanes, executing limited designed quarterback runs, contributing within RPO concepts, and creating positive plays in the red zone. While he is unlikely to become a high-volume rushing threat at the next level, his mobility is functional enough to provide another dimension to an offense.
Areas of Concern
Physical Profile
Carr possesses good size for the position. However, he still has room to continue developing his frame before making the jump to the NFL. At times, his leaner build shows up when defenders are able to bring him down with arm tackles or relatively light contact, particularly when he’s working outside the pocket or attempting to extend plays.
This is less of a concern about his long-term projection and more a reflection of where he currently is in his physical development. As he continues to mature within Notre Dame’s strength and conditioning program, adding functional strength should improve both his durability and his ability to absorb contact without sacrificing mobility. Given his age and limited time as a collegiate starter, there’s every reason to believe additional physical development is still ahead, possibly as early as this next season.
Mechanics
Carr’s mechanics remain one of the biggest developmental areas within his evaluation.
While his overall throwing motion is efficient, his lower-body mechanics occasionally become inconsistent. At times he utilizes a backpedaling drop that disrupts both his timing and overall synchronization with route concepts. Those moments often leave his feet and eyes working independently rather than together, creating unnecessary inconsistency within the progression.
Improving the consistency of his lower-half mechanics should allow his natural accuracy and processing ability to translate more efficiently from snap to snap.
Pocket Feel
While Carr flashes impressive pocket awareness, he does not consistently feel pressure at a high level.
There are occasions where he naturally senses interior rushers and effortlessly works himself into cleaner throwing platforms. There are others where he appears to lose awareness altogether, drifting directly into pressure or creating unnecessary hits for himself. One particularly notable example against USC nearly resulted in a catastrophic collision after Carr stepped directly into pressure that he failed to recognize.
The encouraging part is that the awareness already exists. The challenge is producing it consistently.
Processing Inconsistency
Although Carr’s overall processing is impressive, there are still opportunities for greater consistency.
He will occasionally predetermine throws, remain on his first read longer than necessary, or turn down opportunities that appear available within the structure of the play. There are also instances where he misses developing concepts over the middle of the field, particularly against rotating defenders and robber coverage.
Additionally, there are a handful of screen concepts where Carr appears committed to throwing the designed pass without fully confirming the throwing lane, leading to avoidable turnover opportunities.
These are not limitations of football intelligence—they are reminders that experience still matters.
Decision Making
Carr’s confidence occasionally works against him.
While he generally protects the football well, there are moments where he attempts to create offense that simply is not available. Rather playing what’s in front of him, he’ll sometimes retreat excessively within the pocket, force unnecessary throws in the red zone, or attempt to manufacture explosive plays that increase risk without increasing reward.
The aggressiveness is understandable, but learning when not to chase the extraordinary will improve his overall efficiency.
Consistency of Ball Placement
Despite being one of the more accurate passers in the class, Carr will occasionally miss routine throws without an obvious explanation.
There are isolated examples at every level of the field where clean mechanics and comfortable pockets still result in inaccurate passes. Those misses are infrequent enough that they do not significantly alter the evaluation, but they are unusual enough to warrant continued monitoring as additional film becomes available.
NFL Projection
Prospect DNA
- Alex Smith
- Geno Smith
- Ty Simpson

Player Comparison: Alex Smith
After a complete evaluation of Carr’s profile, Alex Smith emerged as the closest stylistic comparison. Like Smith entering the NFL, Carr wins through processing, accuracy, and ball placement rather than physical traits. Like Smith, Carr also possess enough functional athleticism to extend plays when necessary or pick up first downs when given free access. His game is built on efficiently distributing the football, staying within structure, and making intelligent decisions that keep an offense on schedule.
More broadly, Carr projects into the same quarterback archetype as Alex Smith, Ty Simpson, and Geno Smith, quarterbacks who pair above-average arm talent with advanced processing, quality ball placement, and functional mobility. They are pass-first quarterbacks who thrive from within structure, consistently throwing with anticipation and rhythm while possessing enough athleticism to extend plays without relying on their legs as the foundation of their game. Their athleticism complements their passing ability, allowing them to create when necessary while remaining committed to winning from the pocket.
While Carr still has room to continue developing physically, improve the consistency of his pocket play, and refine his decision-making, his combination of football intelligence, natural arm talent, and feel for the position provides an encouraging foundation. If those developmental areas continue trending in the right direction, he possesses the tools to develop into a high-level NFL starting quarterback.
What’s Left to Prove
The foundation of Carr’s evaluation is extremely encouraging. He has already flashed the anticipation, processing, accuracy, and instincts that project well to the NFL. The next step is proving he can consistently pair those strengths with the physical and technical refinement to maximize his potential.
If CJ Carr wants to establish himself as clear first round quarterback in the 2027 NFL draft, he must:
- Continue refining his drop back, though it isn’t a major issue, eliminating the back pedal drop will create more consistent drops backs and better help him stay within the timing of the offense.
- Become more disciplined under pressure, more consistent as a decision maker, and must eliminate the unnecessary negative plays that are in his game.
- Continue developing his pocket feel, consistently sensing and navigating pressure rather than relying on flashes.
- Improve his consistency working the middle of the field against rotating coverages, robber defenders, and post-snap movement.
- Add functional strength to his frame to better withstand contact and continue developing into an NFL-ready body.
Carr has already shown he possesses many of the difficult traits to teach. Now the challenge is refining the details. If his physical development and consistency continue to progress alongside his already advanced mental game, he has every opportunity to emerge as one of the top quarterbacks in the 2027 NFL Draft class.
Final Thoughts
CJ Carr enters the 2026 season as one of the more polished quarterbacks in the 2027 NFL draft class. Carr’s game is built on the traits that have consistently translated to the NFL: anticipation, processing, timing, accuracy, and an advanced understanding of the position. For a quarterback with only one season as a starter, his command of the mental aspects of quarterback play is encouraging, but more growth is still necessary.
Like any summer evaluation, this projection remains incomplete. Carr still has meaningful questions to answer, but fortunately, none of these concerns are limited by his ability rather they hinge on the refinement of his tool which should naturally improve with experience.
If Carr continues building upon the foundation he established during his first season as Notre Dame’s starter, he has every opportunity to establish himself among the premier quarterbacks in the 2027 NFL Draft. The flashes of football intelligence, advanced ball placement, and natural arm talent are evident on tape. Now it’s time to prove that those flashes of high-level quarterback play can become the expectation every Saturday and into Sundays.
Carr may never be the most physically gifted quarterback in the class, but if his development continues on its current trajectory, he has all the tools necessary to become worthy of a first round selection.
