Matchup History and Excerpts

The Jon Sumrall-led Gators come to Jordan-Hare for a night game this week and it should be interesting. Auburn and Florida have played each other in total 85 times with Auburn winning 44 of those matchups, Florida winning 39, and two of them ending in a tie. Florida won the most recent matchup in 2019, and the two teams have not played since.

Alex Golesh and Sumrall have a long-standing friendship and have coached against each other for a long time. Golesh mentioned both Sumrall and he being coordinators in the league at the same time. However, Golesh said “not this week” in regards to them being friends at his press conference. This is probably due to Golesh’s only loss to Sumrall being 45-10 in 2024. Sumrall was also considered for the Auburn job prior to Golesh and said this at his press conference about home field advantage. The Tigers and Gators renew a rivalry, as well as their head coaches renewing a rivalry. The key players for both teams will have to make plays to help their team win.

Key Auburn Offensive Players

Byrum Brown has played and beat Florida before. Brown has also played and lost against Jon Sumrall, but got hurt in the third quarter of that game, and missed the rest of the 2024 season. The Auburn quarterback is our first key player because this is his first test as the starting quarterback of an SEC school against another SEC school.

Brown, who has thrown for 485 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions, will have to perform better than he did against Baylor. He will have to take what he learned against Baylor and Southern Miss and apply it to Florida. If he can make quick decisions and limit turnovers, then Auburn should be in a good position. He will have to rely on both his arm and his legs to beat the Gators defense.

Since coming to Auburn, Keshaun Singleton has been heralded as the wide receiver that Brown is most comfortable with. They have the most chemistry together and it has seemed that when Brown needs a big catch he looks Singleton’s way first. The problem so far is that Singleton has also had a couple of drops this season. Singleton is going to have to beat those drops and prove that he is an SEC receiver. So far this season, Singleton has 10 receptions for a team-leading 131 yards and no touchdowns. To put his stamp on the game, Singleton needs to score a touchdown and continue to be the go-to guy for Brown.

There is one remaining member of the “Freeze Four” and that is Bryce Cain. Cain is our third key player for the Auburn Tigers offense this week. So far he has one carry for 25 yards, but the 5-foot-10 redshirt sophomore is one player to look out for. Cain has had every opportunity to leave Auburn, from Hugh Freeze being incompetent and only playing players with bigger paychecks, to Golesh moving him to the defensive side of the ball in camp.

Cain has been persistent and resilient and this week it begins to pay off. It may not be the flashiest stat line, but whatever he does will be extremely impactful to Auburn winning the game.

Key Florida Offensive Players

Aaron Philo is the Florida Gators’ first key player against the Auburn Tigers. Philo, the former backup at Georgia Tech, followed his offensive coordinator Buster Faulker to Florida to try to win the starting quarterback job. He did just that, and in two games has put up 517 yards on a 76-percent completion rate with five touchdowns and no interceptions. Philo also has nine carries for 33 yards and two rushing touchdowns, so he poses a little bit of a dual threat.

The biggest concern for Aaron and the Gators is going to be the level of competition faced this season. He has yet to face a Power Four level defense, let alone an SEC defense like Auburn’s. Philo will have to make a huge jump in competition and prove that he can compete against SEC defenses.

The good thing for Philo is that his backfield mate is Jadan Baugh who is one of the best running backs in the country. As a true sophomore, Baugh posted 1170 yards and eight touchdowns with 33 catches for 210 yards and two more touchdowns. So far this season the junior Gator running back has 296 yards on 28 carries and five touchdowns. Baugh is an explosive athlete out of the backfield with the potential of taking any carry to the house. He has also shown to be a capable receiver when necessary. His catching ability is going to be key if Auburn creates pressure on Philo, the quarterback will need Baugh as a safety valve.

TJ Abrams is not the leading wide receiver by receptions or by yards, so why is he a key player in this game? His average yards per catch does lead the team for players with more than one catch. He is averaging 24 yards per catch this season with his longest catch being 63 yards. This means that Abrams can take the top off the defense, and whoever wins this game is going to be the team that has success taking and completing at least one big shot play. Watch out for Abrams to be that guy for Florida.

Key Florida Defensive Players

Jon Sumrall is known as a defensive head coach, but Florida’s defense is their biggest question mark right now because of the lack of competition. Myles Graham, however, is not an unknown. As the leading tackler for the Gators with 16 total tackles this season, Graham is the first key player to watch for Florida.

The junior linebacker has shown in his career that he can do it all; tackle, break up passes, and sack the quarterback. If he does all three against Auburn, then Florida fans will likely be having a good Saturday night. Watch out for Myles Graham to be all over the field.

J’Vari Flowers is a sophomore cornerback for the Florida Gators who is really good at one thing in his short career; pass breakups. As a true freshman, Flowers had four pass breakups in seven games, and so far in his sophomore campaign he already has three pass breakups. The winner of this game is going to be the team that turns the other team over more and capitalizes on it. With a ball-hawking cornerback like Flowers on the field, Byrum Brown and Joel Gordon are going to have to be careful to not be too risky. Flowers has the talent to play with Keshaun Singleton or Jeremiah Koger, but he does lack size against both of these Auburn receivers. Look for Flowers to make a game-changing play in this game.

The final key player for Florida is senior safety Bryce Thornton. Thornton, like Flowers, has a knack for PBUs and actually recorded two against Brown last season when Florida played USF. Thornton has 12 total PBUs in his career at Florida and has recorded two so far this season. Bryce also has four career interceptions, but none this year. Thornton has to be looking for revenge and to pick off Brown this year. If he makes a play on Brown, then Florida’s chances of winning increase significantly.

Key Auburn Defensive Players

Kaleb Harris is the leading tackler for the Auburn Tigers so far this season. Because of that, he is the first key player for the Tigers.

Auburn has to do one thing well in the early parts of this game, and that is stop the run. With Harris being the leading tackler, he should be significantly involved in doing so. Harris had a down year last season, so seeing him leading the team in tackles is a nice change of pace. Along with his team-leading 23 tackles, Harris has three PBUs and one fumble recovery. Harris has returned to being a heat-seeking missile on defense and Auburn is going to need it to stop Jadan Baugh.

Xavier Atkins was an All-American last season and because of that he has earned some notoriety. Atkins currently has nine total tackles and one sack this season, a year after leading the team in sacks. Teams are now game-planning for X and trying to find ways to neutralize him. Atkins is going to have to step up this week against Florida and find ways to break their game plan.

He has all the talent in the world, and DJ Durkin saw that when he scooped him up from LSU in the transfer portal last offseason. This week, Atkins is going to have to show all of that talent and more to help Auburn start off their SEC season at 1-0.

There are certain football players who when you see them words can’t truly describe their physical presence. Alien. Superhero. Hulking Superteen. Elijah Melendez is one of those football players and he is our final key player of the Auburn vs. Florida game.

The 6-foot, 240-pound sophomore linebacker worked on his body in the offseason, and it shows on the field. So far this season he has 18 total tackles, three pass breakups, and one sack so far. He is second in total tackles and third in solo tackles this season. He is going to have to maintain that this game and he alone can neutralize Jadan Baugh. Melendez will have to meet Baugh in the hole over and over again and make sure he tackles solidly. If Melendez can do that, then Auburn has a good shot to win the game.

Keys to the Auburn Florida Game

Auburn can win this game very quickly if it does one thing and that thing is stop Jadan Baugh. Aaron Philo is completely unproven against SEC-caliber defenses and Jadan Baugh is clearly proven as an SEC running back. So, Auburn has to stop the run and force Aaron Philo to throw the ball against their vaunted defense. If they can do that, then Florida and Philo will likely turn the ball over at least once.

Offensively, Auburn has to find a way to maintain balance. Jeremiah Cobb needs to get more than 12 carries and Byrum Brown has to be effectively decisive. If Auburn can run the ball with their stable of backs, and Brown can throw the ball without turning it over, then Auburn should win this game.

Final Prediction: Auburn, 24-21

Recruiting Roundup

According to On3, Auburn has two visitors officially scheduled, and one of them is my favorite prospect in four-star running back Myson Johnson-Cook. The Illinois running back has a ton of potential at 6-foot-2, 235 pounds – and still runs like a deer.

The other visitor is Preston Williams out of the fairytale town of Skipperville, Alabama. Williams is an ATH out of South Alabama that does everything for his small high school team and is a very intriguing prospect.

The other key note in recruiting is that 2028 quarterback Sam Sollie is doing what the quarterback is supposed to do in a recruiting class and he is recruiting other players. He has also stated that he is 100-percent committed to Auburn.

Auburn still sits at 12th in the 2027 classes with 14 four-star commits and 11 three-star commits. Myson Johnson-Cook, Gary Chatman, and Layton Von Brandt are three players to keep an eye on as players who could increase their star value.
