Cal Golden Bears vs. UCLA Bruins 2026 Preview: Welcome Back, Old Friend

At last, Cal football is back this weekend. We can all take a deep breath knowing the dog days of summer are coming to an end while football season is upon us. This season, led by first-year head coach Tosh Lupoi, the Golden Bears will play the UCLA Bruins under the lights this Saturday at California Memorial Stadium. Before we break down the game, let’s take a look at some of the history between these two long-time rivals.

Matchup History

Saturday night will be the 95th game played between Cal and UCLA. Two long-time rivals are finally playing against one another for the first time since a Cal victory in 2023. Even though we’re in our third season of realignment, it still feels weird to say that these schools haven’t faced off in three years.

Unfortunately, the Bruins dominate in the all-time record against Cal with 58 wins compared to 35 for Cal. Oddly enough, the first time they played was all the way back in 1933 in a game that ended in a 0-0 tie. The last 10 games against UCLA haven’t been great either, with the Bruins winning seven of those contests to the Bears’ three. It just feels right that these two are playing again, and what better way to rekindle that old spark than to play week one. Hopefully, we won’t have to wait another three years to see it again.

Key Players for Cal

It all started when the Bears fired former coach Justin Wilcox and brought in Tosh Lupoi. It’s been talked about a lot, but one thing that really impressed me about Lupoi was that after his introductory press conference, he immediately got on a plane to Hawaii to make sure JKS was all in, and boy was he ever.

Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele is one player to watch in this game, and rightfully so. He had one of the most impressive true freshman seasons I have ever seen last year, and it’s borderline frightening to see how much he’s improved over the offseason. JKS is getting a lot of love and hype right now in the college football media ecosystem, and deservedly so. The guy has what you call the “it factor”.

Many college football analysts even believe that he is a dark-horse candidate for the Heisman. Wouldn’t that be something? Anyway, expect him to pick up where he left off in 2026. And with a much-improved supporting cast, the whole world will know his name sooner rather than later.

Cal has a lot of new guys on the defensive side of the ball this year. It might take them some time to gel together, but one player who I think will make an instant impact is defensive back Kingston Lopa. Lopa, a redshirt sophomore who followed Tosh from Oregon, is huge. He’s 6-foot-5 and weighs 210 pounds. That’s a really big player, and someone that you can utilize all over the field. Coming out of high school, Lopa was highly recruited by programs all over the country. He’s spent the last two seasons at Oregon, and now it’s time for him to put it all together. I am very intrigued to see how defensive coordinator Michael Hutchings uses Lopas’ talents this Saturday. We should get a better understanding of how he will be used this season following the game, but Cal fans should be very excited.

Key Players for UCLA

Much like Cal, UCLA has a lot of fresh faces in the building outside of their quarterback. This game feels like it’s going to be a duel for the ages, and a reason for that is quarterback Nico Iamaleava.

Iamaleava is entering his fourth season of college football after spending his first two seasons at Tennessee and last year at UCLA. He has had a lot of ups and downs during his career. Last season, towards the end of the year, it looked like he was really starting to put it together. I would also certainly label him as a dual threat quarterback. He can not only beat you with his arm, but with his legs, too. Last season he threw for 1928 yards, but tacked on another 505 yards with his legs. It will be interesting to see how he fits into Bob Chesney’s offense, but Bruins fans have a lot to be excited about.

One thing that happens a lot now is when a coach moves on from a smaller school to a bigger program, they tend to bring a lot of their guys with them. Bob Chesney is no different. There are a lot of former JMU players on this UCLA roster. Amongst all the transfers, defensive lineman Aiden Gobaira has caught my attention. He started his career at Notre Dame, but never played. Last season for JMU, it all started to come together for him. He only started one game, but played in all 14 where he racked up seven and a half tackles for loss with four sacks. It appears he’s going to get plenty of burn this Saturday night, and he’s one player this Cal offensive line can’t afford to not block.

2026 Game Preview: How Cal Can Win This Game

This is, in my opinion, a true definition of a “toss up” game. Each team has really good playmakers on both sides of the ball – and new coaching staffs. This is a huge test for both programs. To me, this game feels like it’s going to be a barn burner. Cal has the advantage at quarterback, but Nico and UCLA probably don’t think so.

All week, we have seen fans from both schools online argue and fight about what’s going to happen this game. I don’t know what’s going to happen, but my gut tells me Cal will win a close one. It’s the debut of the Tosh Lupoi era, an era that want’s to win and make a statement. Pair that with being at home in a sold out CMS, there might be some fireworks. It really does feel different this time around.

In my season prediction article last week, I have Cal winning this game. I will stand by it, and proudly. Cal will start the season off 1-0. Hopefully, the outcome of this game brings rejuvenates this rivalry going forward.
